1 The beginning

CHAPTER 1

I was freezing on the roof and I did not think about it as I had more important things to do. I was watching the stars on my telescope that dad has given me last year on my 20th birthday. The stars had always fascinated me. I wanted to become a scientist since I was 8 years old and my 9 years old niece, Cory says that I had become her inspiration to become a doctor. My dad is an honest police officer and my mom is a hardworking teacher. After 25 years of marriage, they still behave like a newly wedded husband an wife. My Uncle John still calls them as love birds.

''Still watching your prince charming from Heaven, Pretty little Girl?''

Ben Lien, my best friend who always finds an opportunity to tease me as when I was 5 years old as I said to my mother that my lover would come above the sky and we will marry on the seventh heaven.

''Hahaha. Very funny. I was watching the stars as in the Meteo, they precast a storm coming by tomorrow. By the way, I didn't see you the full day. Where have you been?''

"Oh, you missed me? I missed you too," he said teasingly with a big smile.

He still has a little crush on me as I was his first girlfriend and the first one and last one to dump him. We were dating each other since kinder garden. Then we grew up and things became complicated. So we broke up and became friends. We got along very well and soon became best friend forever. Our families or I would say our mummy still wants us to be a couple. My dad let me on my own decisions but our mothers still have hope.

I go to Sir Richard Goodman University. It is also a Scientific research centre. I got a scholarship through which I was able to study there. I was lucky to have a professor like Dr Thomas Anthony Barnes. He almost looks like Dumbledore in Harry Potter except for the beard part. He has been my professor for nearly two years. He teaches us with a strange glim in his eyes. He is as fascinating as his works. I work as his assistant after my courses. I have learned many things about him that nobody knows. He often mentioned me as his secret keeper to his colleagues. Many rumours were being passed that he was too old to teach and that he became nuts for believing that there are other beings in the galaxy. But when I asked him about it, he said something like " The world turns around on hope. And believing in that hope gives us faith." Then smiled widely at my expression. After that, I could not deny that his mind is a little cracked.

" Hello. Earth is calling."Ben says with a big smile on his face.

Mom was on the seventh cloud when Ben came ''to pay a visit to my mom'' which was far from the truth. Our mothers came with several excuses to put us together and these things amused Ben a lot. Once he called me ''my girl'' and our poor mothers face lit up like Christmas trees.

"Do you know that Jess got a new car, dear? It is a little old but it still works and that's important." says my mom suddenly. She was trying to make a conversation which will soon turn into a nightmare. Does she even think before speaking?

Soon after the embarrassing dinner was over. Ben and I were left alone. I am sure that he was enjoying some of his privates stupid jokes. After welcoming a sip of my cold water, I gave him an accusatory stare which he immediately replied by a big smile and says and I quote ''Whaat..'' in a very innocent tone. If I did not know him better I would obviously fall in his trap.

''You did know why our mom fix this dinner, why for goodness sake you agree to it?'' I ask irritatingly.

''Honey, I was invited by your mother and as your best friend and a gentleman, it would rude to refuse a lady especially when that lady is my second mom,'' he says and a little slow as if he was explaining a child. I just narrow my eyes and he shrugs his shoulders. He loves to annoy me to death.
