101 Spending the Night at the Rest Stop

Due to the lab building collapse, all the guards immediately ran to the site to help put it out which left the exit minimally guarded. With their skills, Aida and Lucifer were able to sneak out with ease. After reuniting with everyone else, they quietly drove off into the night without anyone realizing.

On the way, Aida had explained to Lucifer the cruel experiments that Terrance and the scientists had done to the little kids who had been abandoned by their parents or were orphaned by the outbreak. Xiao Ai had informed her that Rose was actually not the only one who had been experimented on in this way. Rather, all the other kids had already died from the experiments, making Rose the sole survivor among the children.

Hearing this, Lucifer's eyes burned with fury and raised his hand to punch the wall of their RV. Aida, anticipating this, grabbed his fist before it could make contact and glared at him, "Don't ruin my RV."

Nodding apologetically, he forced himself to calm down. He knew that getting angry wouldn't be a solution for anything. All in all, his anger was understandable. He had dedicated his life to saving lives and helping people, yet one of the people he personally saved was now actively hurting and killing others. He was now regretting his choice to not kill Terrance earlier.

The twins and Light had also been listening quietly on the side. Light's eyes darkened when he heard what the children had been subjected to, it was utterly inhumane. He had suspected something when he first saw Rose enter, but this was far beyond his imagination. Light wished to personally end those disgusting scientists with his own hands as well. If he hadn't been with Yukio and Rin when the outbreak happened or if they were left back in Japan, their fates would likely have been similar as well.

The twins, who had grown up in a sheltered environment most of their life, were also deeply affected by this awful reality. It sounded just like a nightmare to them, yet there were other people who actually had to live those fates. Yukio clenched his fists tightly as well, eager for the day where he had enough strength to prevent these wrongs from happening. Rin's reaction was the most direct. He began waving his fists around, preparing for a fight, only to be smacked on the head by Light.

Ace, as the designated driver, listened on but made no outward reaction. He continued to drive for a few hours before stopping at a nearby rest stop. They would spend the night here.

Without needing any orders, everyone eagerly hopped off the RV and cleared out all the Enraged and Reapers in the surrounding area with unusual enthusiasm. They fought silently and landed fatal blows with every hit, not allowing Little White to scare away the Enraged. The fight with Enraged and Reapers was exactly what they needed to wash the bitter taste out of their mouths.

Aida didn't participate in the fight but instead watched on the side. She shook her head at their reactions. It made sense since they had grown up in a relatively peaceful environment all their lives. She and Xiao Ai hadn't been so lucky and had become semi-numb to these kinds of occurrences. They had adopted the rule of saving those they could but also understood the reality that they could not save everyone and they were not going to try playing hero.

After an hour of fighting, they had finally cleared out all the infected in the area. As they returned to the RV, Aida clapped her hands and said, "Ok, that's enough stewing over bad things for one night. Let's all get some rest. Those who can't sleep, take the time to meditate and train. Getting stronger is the only way you can protect the people you care about." She said this as a reminder not just to others, but also to herself.

Saying that, she went upstairs to check on Rose. Little White and Xiao Ai had stayed in the room in case she woke up scared. To her surprise, Rose was already awake and staring out the window emotionlessly. Aida observed Rose's face as she entered the room. If one didn't have a skill like Aida's, one might have mistaken Rose for a Reaper due to her lack of expressions.

Xiao Ai and Little White who immediately noticed Aida's entrance, quickly ran over to Aida and attached themselves to her like two little tails. She patted the two of them on the head as she approached Rose.

Aida carefully crouched down and said gently, "Rose, guess what? I have a surprise for you."

Rose turned her head to face Aida, but no emotions could be seen on her face. It seemed as though she didn't care about the surprise that Aida had for her. For Aida, it was enough that Rose reacted to her words at all, she didn't mind the lack of response.

Smiling slightly, Aida took out her phone and sat down next to Rose. She was careful not to make close contact with Rose as Rose had a tendency to flinch when being touched. Rose actually seemed to have more trust and be more comfortable with Xiao Ai, a bun shaped child, and Little White, a Reaper.

Aida then played the recording that she had Lucifer help her take earlier on. Rose's eyes stared at the screen nonchalantly at first, but as she looked closer, a flicker of recognition passed her eyes. She recognized the building in the recording as the lab she had been confined in and anger shone in her eyes. Next she saw a dark figure walk into the building without paying any mind to the security. Roughly 20 seconds later, the figure reappeared from the building facing the camera as a flash lit up the entire screen. After the blinding light disappeared, Rose saw that the entire building had crumbled to the floor.

Seeing this, Rose's expression changed from one of anger to one of extreme concentration. She snatched the phone from Aida and gripped it tightly. Staring intently at the video, she tried her hardest to verify whether it was real. She tapped the screen again to replay the video over and over, replaying the entire scene frame by frame. After watching it over 20 times, she finally looked up at Aida with curious eyes as though begging for confirmation.
