1 World building and the promise

The world is big but not well connected. People who live in settlements far away from cities sometimes have a hard time.

Tron a small settlement in the far east in the forest in this country is one of them. The ancestors of this 200-man settlement were family members of followers of a prince who were on the losing side in the struggle for the throne.

Now more than 500 years have passed. The inhabitants of these villages do not know the name of the prince for whom they once were, nor exactly in which country they live. Likewise, they consider the existence of cities a myth. Their vocabulary has degenerated due to isolation. The alphabet they still learn is also degraded. A large number of letters have disappeared, making the ancient books of their ancestors difficult to understand. At least they still learn to read. Members of such settlements see mages as children of God or as God's blessed ones.

What these settlers do not know, however, is that every human possesses at least one unawakened magic talent, some even several. But in order to awaken one's magic talent, one should know the concepts of the respective magic branches, for example, the creation of fire due to heat and the oxidation of wood, for example, are important to awaken the talent of fire if one possesses a fire talent. Most people possess one to even all four elements to some degree.

More complex talents such as Space Control or Swarm Control are more difficult to awaken on your own, as the concepts are harder to understand. Now, it can also happen that someone's understanding is similar to reality, which allows them to awaken their talent by chance.

All this sounds way too complicated now, how are armies of mages supposed to be trained you ask. Well, mages above a certain level can recognize most unawakened talents because of their link to magic. The four elements are easier to detect by any master mage, but a more complex talent can only be detected by a master mage who has the same talent or by a grand master mage. However, machines that recognize magic talents, as well as medicines that allow one to better understand the concepts, exist only in cities.

But now let's get back to the settlement.

"Dear sir, follow me quickly, I have something to show you," said the village elder, while an impatient man in his mid-30s followed him.

"I hope you are not wasting my time, because I don't want to stay long in this godless place," the tax collector replied.

"No no no my dear lord. A huge monster has been sighted. The books of my ancestors call such a thing a dragon," exclaimed the village elder named John.

"If it really is a dragon, then I will help every child in this settlement to have a chance to become a mage. If you are wrong, then the taxes for the next five years of this settlement will be doubled," the tax man replied excitedly.

After a few minutes, they found the remains of scales and huge footprints.

"This is definitely a dragon. When was the last time the dragon was sighted?" the tax collector questioned while handing him a small bag.

"Twelve days ago," replied the village elder, taking the pouch.

"I will be back in three weeks with reinforcements. Your village is exempt from tax revenue for the next five years, starting today. Give every child from the settlement under 20 a pellet of this pouch. After I return with reinforcements, we will check every child in the settlement and take those with extraordinary talents with us." Said the mage as he flew into the sky.

20min later, each child from the settlement was given an orb. Among them were five brothers. From the oldest to the youngest Luz (18), Gab (16), Raph(15) and the twins Az(14) Michael(14).

Michael asked his older siblings "What is this?" while showing them the orb.

"Just put it in your mouth. It gives us a chance to find out where our talent lies." replied Gab.

"But please don't feel bad if you still don't know where your talent really lies. The village elder said that very few people know immediately where their talent lies. Most will only know in which direction their talent resides," Luz replied.

"So bon appétit," said Raph and swallowed the sphere. Az only saw Raph fall to the ground and made a loud noise. "Az now it's your turn, don't worry I'll make sure you don't fall" said Gab. "Promise?""Yes I promise". and so the next one fell to the ground. "Weren't you going to stop him from falling?" asked Michael in puzzlement. "Yes I was."

It was not until late that night that the first of the five brothers awoke Luz.

Luz smiled when he saw his siblings sleeping and hurried to the village elder's hut and knocked on his front door.

"Come in," came from inside. Luz entered and saw the village elder reading a book with glasses. "Do you know what your talent might be?" asked the old man, putting his book back.

"I'm pretty sure it's the Space talent." "If it really is the space talent then they will take you soon".

"Are there any books for my talent?" asked Luz.

"Only one book exists for your talent. But it is a book for master mages and is not really suitable for new ones"

"I still want the book" Luz insisted.

"Promise me you won't use a spell until you are a master mage" sighed John.

"I promise."

"Good and now to bed with you".

"Will do sir"
