9 C-08: Light Rain

The lupine monster's head flew off with another swing, ending the current wave of monsters.

It has been a few hours since the battle started and I don't know how many monsters I killed at this point.

Hefting the greatsword Dragon Slayer in his elbow, I surveyed the kill zone.

It was a few block from the gate, a large depression on the ground with archers and mages on the building around it.

Infantrymen dotted the area, either cleaning their blood stained weapons and armor, or dragging the carcass of the monsters to the castle for dismantling.

"Report," I ordered.

"Nineteen dead, eight injured that can't fight anymore. All are infantry." Hassan reported. "The group at the west gate are holding strong at the first Killzone. Same for the north and south gates."

"Good. How much time till the next wave?" I asked. "And how much time till daybreak?"

"The monsters are avoiding our city by a large margin, skirting the edge of the trenches." Hassan answered. "And less than half an hour till first light."

"Tell everyone to rest but stay on guard. The moment dawn comes, have everyone come inside and rest up." I ordered to which Hassan nodded and vanished.

I dropped ang dragged the greatsword behind me as I walk to the castle. I need a shower, tea, and sleep.

And then back to battle once night fell.

I have a good guess why the monsters are avoiding us just as we are exhausted and that guess involves the feathered one high up in the sky.

To be honest, this entire debacle could be avoided if I just order Laplace to defend this place. She has endless methods to do this.

But I want to do this. I want the first fight I have since reincarnation to be memorable.

There is also no danger for me. Laplace can foresee almost all possible futures and any future that is detrimental to me will definitely be avoided.

Even if my people is wiped out, I can easily replace them in less than a month, less if I got lucky.

I could just leave everything to Laplace and live leisurely , but where's the fun in that?

With Laplace, I have a safety net. I can do whatever I want and will never end up dead.

When dawn came so does the monsters but I wasn't worried.

The monsters came inside the city unimpeded, but the moment they were deep enough, a rain of light fell from the skies.

Each ray accurately hitting the eyes of the monsters at angles that it amplifies the light, instantly destroying the eyes and microwaving the brain.

At this rate, I'd have filled a storage with meat in less than two days.

From the records, I though the waves would be sporadic groups of monsters rampaging throughout two weeks. I never would have imagined it would be a non-stop assault.

The records of the previous monster waves were sparse and it registered every few days. I have surmised that the waves were also at intervals but maybe the records were only written when the lord or lady at that time was resting.

Hmm.. maybe I'll also write memoirs about this wave.

Anyways, I look at the sight of the monsters falling at the rain of light. It was so beautiful, watching streaks of light fall from the sky.

It wasn't like lasers, it was as if light behaved like rainfall.

I smiled as an aurora appeared above my city. Laplace, you are more and more becoming my favorite.

"Young Master, your tea," Rita said behind me.

I didn't turn towards her and just continue staring at the skies.
