5 Fighting Alone

'First thing I need is a weapon' Wanting the same weapon as before I went to the bathroom. But it didn't go as planned, this curtain holder wasn't of hard plastic like one in the hotel.

I made my way back to the bedroom I slept in. With layered hand, I broke a bed frame. I was now holding a 1.5m long wooden stick. Next, I went to the kitchen. Unfortunately, this household only had one sharp knife that could be used in combat. Taking into account one from a hotel now I had two.

Spear was the only thing I had some experience using, so I decided to make it again. I taped knife to the one end of a stick, I now had somewhat of a spear. One from the professional kitchen was sharper and looked more solid so I used that one

Grip was really uncomfortable considering the wooden stick had four edges, but this was the best I had. Next, I needed food and water.

There was a 2l CocaCola in the fridge and one oil bottle. I decided to fill these two with water. I didn't want to risk it with detergent or bleach bottles since I wasn't sure if I would be able to clean them enough to be safe.

'Nothing' There was no canned food. I looked at the table. There was a piece of bread and a jar of jam next to it. I ripped bread, dipped it into the jam and quickly ate my breakfast.

I searched the whole house again for anything useful I may have forgotten. A backpack was slightly heavier than before.

Of weapons, I had a wooden spear, a knife, and a half-broken spear. I was ready to go.

But before going I decided to check the TV. Channels were still working and all of them with a similar message. Refuge camps were being made by police. I was surprised at their quick reaction. There was one very close to me. Apparently, the army was also on the move.

I picked a new destination since now I could go farther than the factory. I probably won't see Tyler for some time, but his destination is the same as mine, home.

I checked the street. No monsters were there. Jumping over the wall I started to jog.

After taking a turn I could see my first opponents. It was a group of 3. One started running towards me. Now in the range of jumping on me, I thrusted my spear forward. Right into the brain. As I pulled it out I could see the knife at the end facing slightly downward. Unsatisfied I approached two slow ones.

As I pierced the skull of first one second came next to me. I wasn't used to fighting alone. I couldn't retrieve my spear before he started a biting motion. Time wasn't on my side, I didn't have time to take out a knife from my pocket. Its mouth started to close.

"AHHH!"

Luckily I managed to create a layer of rocks on my shoulder. However, their biting power was much stronger than I thought. My 2cm thick layer of solid rocks was penetrated. While it was trying to take another bite I dropped the spear.

Thud

Its dead body was on the ground and blood on my knife.

'That was way to close! I won't turn into one of them right?' Worry overtook me as I thought this was the end. Layer disappeared as I went into someone's garden to treat my injury. Luckily I had bandage I looted from the previous house.

After cleaning it with water I bandaged it, all while thinking of becoming a zombie.

As I moved my left arm pain in my shoulder increased. Fortunately, I could still use my arm despite the pain.

'I have to be more careful.' Fighting together with someone was much easier than fighting alone.'

I continued walking with my aching legs.

After the next fight, I had a better idea of how to fight alone. I needed to run and make them chase me, killing them slowly, this also needed much more stamina.

As I finished with the current group I was fighting against, my attention was brought at what was in front of me. Mother holding her child as zombies approached closer. I dashed forward.

"Run to me!"

She immediately sprinted towards me, holding her small child tightly. There were more than a dozen.

Three were running close behind. Zombie extended its sharp nails into the air ready to strike. As it started to bring its hand down I threw my spear targeting the head.

'Tsk. I missed' and hit it into the heart instead. Even if it was just 5 meters of distance, good thing I didn't hit mother at least. I regretted throwing my weapon, but who knows what would have happened.

Two were left running. The distance was closed now. I targeted my knife towards its brain. It dropped dead. As the other one tried to catch the mother ignoring me I covered my left hand in a layer of rocks.

Catching it for the head it fell down to the ground. I stabbed it right in between my fingers and into the brain. Only one Runner left. It was trying to stand up. Spear was still inserted into its body. Pulling the spear, a body that was already off-balance, fell forward. My knife was now in range.

Thud

I didn't want to deal with slow ones. Mother was already running in direction of a shelter. That's probably the reason why she was outside. I followed behind. I

If I could save someone's life by running a hundred meters I would, as long as my life wasn't in danger. I wasn't ready to die for a stranger. The reason why I fought was that I was confident in killing them.

After taking a few turns, and killing some zombies, a shelter was in sight. There weren't any monsters around it so I decided to keep going on my way. I didn't want to deal with police forcing me to stay in the shelter.

"Thank you young man. You saved our lives." Said mother with a grateful and teared up voice.

"Don't mention it." I didn't do it to be a hero. Turning around I started to head back.

"Wait! You should come with us, it's dangerous!" The mother of a child didn't want to let me go.

"I have to go."

"Are you sure?" She said to me.

"Yes. Take care of yourselves." I felt warm. It made me remember my mother. 'I will make sure to return home.'

Fortunately, I didn't turn into one of them. Seems like you become zombie only after you die.

The day was already close to ending, the night started to come. My backpack was heavier than it was in the morning. As I was about to call it the end of the day and entered the garden I was disappointed, there were people in the house I picked. Learning people can't be easily trusted I resumed with my search.

Picking a new house there was just one group between it and me. It looked like an easy fight. I approached them. Runner started heading towards me. I positioned myself to strike with a spear.

...From a corner of my eye, I could see a black silhouette. Turning my head I saw a zombie falling from a car. How did I not see it? It grabbed my foot. Pulling it I lost balance and fell on the ground. Runner was approaching. I needed to be quick. I grabbed my knife and stabbed zombie on the ground as fast as I could. Runner was already to close for the spear. I tried to take my knife but I couldn't.

Zombie jumped. Retrieving and placing both my hands on a spear I tried to block. Its teeth stabbed right into the wood.

GRAGHH

As it gave excited growls It broke measly spear in half. Sharp nails were targeting my eyes. I quickly layered my left side of the face. I managed to block it. However, while I was blocking my face its other hand struck the right side of my stomach.

'F*ck!'

What could I do. I couldn't grab my knife, I didn't have time to maneuver wooden spear to stab it and a plastic spear was in my backpack which was now lying on the ground. In a desperate attempt, I tried to strike it with a layered fist. It didn't do any damage. Adrenaline rushed through me. My mind entered survival mode. And then I thought of something. I wasn't sure if it would work.

"AHHHHH"

I held its neck with my left hand and screamed as I tried to sharpen rock on the fingers of the right hand. It was a very small change. But it was enough! With my open palm, I stabbed my fingers into its brain. Blood poured onto my face. Instantly I felt incredibly tired. My attention started to drift, vision started to turn black, I couldn't think anymore.

'I can't fall unconscious. It's over if I-'

My muscles relaxed, and were lying on hard concrete.
