1 Prologue

In the begin, there was only heaven. The gods thought it fit to create a subordinate lifeform for their entertainment and decided to breathe life into flesh and bone. Thus, man was born in the image of his creators and as such, would spend a lifetime trying to resemble his fathers by cultivating spiritual energy in various forms.

Along with creating men, and infusing them with all of their godliness, Evil was born from within their insecure and mistrusting hearts. When this happened, men started losing out to their evil essences hidden within themselves and began cultivating demonic energy instead of godly one. For a time, many men became proficient in the dark arts and caused more harm than good.

Among the great demonic immortals, one man whose heart was as black as night was so powerful that his skills rivalled with the purest of cultivators on earth. With the intent of overthrowing heaven itself, Li YiXin created hundreds of evil devices and spread them around in different towns, all across the country.

One of these inventions was especially evil because it could control life and death, something only the gods should have been able to do. Great men and women coveted this incredible weapon and, over the years, it fell into hundreds of different hands. This particular device started wars, caused famines, created plagues, and was the source of hundreds of thousands of death.

One day, this mysterious artefact completely vanished, leaving the world in disarray. More wars broke out, more people murdered each other, all in search of the long-lost item. When the gods saw what had happened, they sealed Li YiXin in the depths of the darkest, coldest mountain to prevent him from harming humans ever again.

Centuries passed and legends arose. Many brave heroes tried to find both the artefact and the man who created it, but no one ever succeeded. After more than a thousand years, truths became myths, facts became rumours, and most of the population forgot about Li YiXin and his evil items.

Ever so often, a mysterious item filled with dark energy will surface from unlikely places, wreaking havoc, and reminding the elders of stories about long-past evils. To fight these evil forces, every decade has a series of elected, secret leaders, collectively called the 'ShengJie FenDui,' the Holy Squadron, who are aware of all occurrences of evil across the country.

Their mission is simple: find all artefacts and destroy them, to prevent evil from taking root in people's minds and hearts.

Rumours say that each major clan has such a spy among its ranks, a holy man capable of finding and destroying these dangerous items. Some of these spies will never find an artefact within their lifetime.

Others will become legendary.

This is the story of how one man became a crusader despite his desires, found love and hope while losing himself along the way, and was ultimately forced into a cruel circle of fate and destiny.
