CHAPTER 5 –

THE AVENGER

"You will tell me what you were doing there with that good for nothing boy ?" Mary run as Kaima try to make a move, her direction was towards their house, Mary stop recline on a tree her hands fold. She felt her stomach clutch

"What are you doing here?, will you get inside" kaima roar, point her hand towards the house entrance. Mary shook her head in disagreement, tears make it way down her cheek, pick one of her slippers it leaded on Mary "I said, you should get in". Mary try escaping from another direction, Kaima run after her, she knew if she didn't make a move to escape, kaima would have taken action in practicing her hobby, and there no how she would escape from her. During the school sports, she run for her school, she always comes back with either first or second award for best runner, Mary had that in mind, she just wanted to try, but the move Kaima take was fearful, she definitely has to obey her, to avoid getting the beaten of life time. Chinasa in front of the house, she sits on a bench her makeup kit besides her, as she display her skills on her face, she make sure she wasn't disturb by the race and drama, Kaima and Mary was acting. she was mindful of the way she applied it on her face, making sure every distraction was given no room to her privacy. Mary land on her body, the brush in her head fell off as she was about to paint her cheek, her eye rage like fire, as she glare at Kaima

"You're not save there, you will tell me what you were doing there. A little girl like you, you now have a boyfriend, you better talk now" she roar. It was like she was more provoke, by her own words. the more she explained what she saw the more upset she is, she grab Mary's hand to pull her, Mary pulling herself from her, she glue her body on Chinasa. Chinasa stood up with the rage in her eye, her hand lands on Kaima's cheek

"Have you lost it, are you knot. Is something wrong with you" she grunt. it sounds like thunder strike on her at that moment, she went deaf and dump. Her two hands on the cheek her mouth widely open, every thing Chinasa said only her last word was clear to her, she look at her so divested.

" what's it?, what did I ever do to you" she runt. her leg madly banging on the innocent floor

"try touch her again, it will be worst than what you just received now" she groan

"So you support what she did, I'm not surprised, why you did" Chinasa eyed her so deadly. she took a two step back, in case she has to run for her life. "When mother comes back" she grunt. " and you, we still have beef, you better be ready for me" her caution. was like a dead sentence to Mary, she left.

"get off my body, you just ruin my makeup" she grunt, pick up they brush. " sit", Mary sits besides her, she cleans the sand on the brush "who's that?" She query

"my boyfriend" she said smiling,

"At this age you have boyfriend" pause. stare at her, she felt doped, as she fling her two leg on air, "I'm not against that. At least you know what's good and bad" she shrugged her shoulder. "you shouldn't be messing up with those broke thing. you need a man who could take care of you" she glance at her. stare from her head to her feet, than gaze around "you need to take a bath, get a new look. Your hair, your wear needs to be changed" she grunt

"You're my big sis, you should be teaching me" she exclaimed, Chinasa smiled, caresses her hair

"Don't worried" she tact, packing her make up kit

That night she took Mary out, for the first time in her life. she has watched it on TV and as well heard people talk about it, now she's here to see and feel the crazy things done in club. the feeling she had was the most exciting moment of her life. Chinasa introduce her, to some of her friends and men who were there. she dance like that was going to be her last dance, they eat and drank a lot of alcohol drinks, each of them spent the night with one men, some of the men were married some bachelor at least they went home with something. Mary was so excited she couldn't believe she could make a huge amount. She had that day, easy way to make money.

"Oo... you can't wear this leaving my house" Nnenna grunt. Standing at the door

" But mom, what's wrong with this" she stare at herself

"It's better you wore pant and bra, than to wear this. And by the way who bought this wear for you?" she grunt

" Big sis" retort so childish

"why I'm I not surprise, before I open my eye and close it, you have changed that" she yell. her eye close, Mary run into the room.

"Why won't I, I can't wait, just send me the address, I will definitely come, 8:00pm. Is a sure thing" a slap from no where, comes directly on her cheek. The phone on her left cheek fall off her hand, the air that occurred her mouth was enough to save a life, she place her hands on her cheek, as she turn to face the person

"Let me see you," he yell. "where are you going by 8:00pm?".

She frown "what did I do ?, what" she said. A hot tears glide down her eye

"One more word from you" he lift his hand, She bend to pick her phone

"What did I ever did, I can't be free to live my life" she grunt

"I have heard enough about you, I'm making this promise to you. If I caught you with any of this old men, I will roast you alive" Emeka roar

"What wrong I'm I doing, know one cares about me, I'm the one taken care of myself" she pause, wipe her tears. Emeka melted, he felt his heart was burning on fire. For the first time he felt he has let his sister down, he has never taken responsibility of his little one's affairs, he feels guilty, stare at her for some time, and left, without authoring a word. He spend the rest of the day thinking, he needs to sit up as a man, take up the responsibility of caring for his family. Since his not a graduate how possible is it, he can't even speak good English, even the construction work his into, is just a peanut money, it's not even enough for a pack of cigarettes and some bottle of alcohol, talk of given to his mother. But he needs to take care of his little one's, he thinks deep, to get solution but no clue of what to do, he keeps his mind on a mission.

Mary felling from end to another, she couldn't keep her steps in one direction, as Chinasa struggle with her, a huge hot spit pour out from her mouth. Chinasa tapping her from the back, as she throw up

"You should behave your self, just this little drink you drank, you can't handle it" she caution

"It was fun, really, really fun" she giggle. "I love it, please big sis take me back, I want to keep dancing, two more I will be ok" she groan. she felt something was forced out of her throat, another flush of spit, she thrown up till her stomach was empty. Nnenna walks out, so divested seeing Mary, Chinasa helps her sits on a pavement, petting her back.

"what have you done to my daughter, Chinasa?" she grunt. clutch Mary on her chest "Mary, what has the done to you?" she exclaimed

"Mommy, nobody hurt her, she took a lot" Chinasa said

She turn to her " a lot of what?" said so anxious to her, Kaima and other hush out

"she drank a lot, she took more than she could carry" she said so reluctant, her hand folds

"mom, let's just take her inside" Kaima said, Assist Mary.

"Oh, my husband, see what you have left for me, what have I done to deserve this" she said in tears,

"Mom, why are you crying over nothing, Mary is ok, she just need to sleep, tomorrow she's going to be fine" she console

"You are a shame to this family, I don't want to see you in my house, all you have done is to bring shame and abomination to this family. look at what you have done to your self, I want you to leave!!, please Chinasa live my family alone" she roar. Point to the street, Chinasa felt her heart numb and everything kind of shut down, tears cloud her eyes, she opened her mouth but author no word. Nnenna rush into the house

"Mommy, where did you want her to go, by this hour of the night" kaima whispered, behind the door

"Where ever she wishes to, it's not my problem, I don't care" she yell. At some point every where went silent, you can even hear the sound of the cool breeze, Chinasa lied on the bench, shrivelled in cold. She tried close her eye, sleep was far away from her, the door lock was heard open

"Please, come inside" a voice come from behind, she stood up hearing the voice. she knew it wouldn't come from Mary cause she was so drunk, she couldn't even remember what happened, and it definitely not coming from Nnenna, she has disowned her long time ago, and won't give a damn if she freeze or been eaten up by something. It was kaima her voice tell. She couldn't wait but to jump in.

The next morning, bucket of water was empty on Mary, She wake up, so divested, every things looks blur in her eye, she saw someone standing beside the matrix she was laying, she rubs her hand on his eyes. Kaima standing with the bucket, Ugo lean on a wall his hands fold. She knew she wasn't safe, she felt more cold than the water that was poured on her, she looks at Kaima, she frighten the more.

"Where were you last night?" she grunt, she clutch her pillow so hard, grinding her teeth.

"What did I do?" she said so scared

"You will know what you did if you don't start speaking" she said, pick a broom

"Big sis, sister Chinasa" she screamed on her voice, She's the only one that could save her, Chinasa dash in Painting

"What's that, what happened?" she query, Mary hush to her, hold her tight on the waist, she knew she's now save

"You think, I'm joking with you" she yell

"What is it this morning" she exclaimed

"Mary, start talking" she yelled, ignoring her

"You want her to start talking what, Kaima respect yourself this morning" she warned

" I will beat the hell out of you, since you have decided to bring disgrace to this family" she yell, her eyes widened. Chinasa mouth opened.

She wandered what gives her the courage. "she must had take a strong substance" chinasa thinks to herself. "Don't let me forget my hand on your face, Kaima" she warned, lift her hand, Kaima distance herself

"You think I will stand here and watch you slap her" Ugo retort. It feels like she was shock by an electricity as Ugo released the word. Emeka is the only one who could challenge her. Ugo saying made her realized, her right as the first child, has been under rated, it was now coming to her, she's losing her position as the first.

"I'm the one, you were referring to?" she retort so divested

"No, those wall. I'm sure they can talk" he proclaimed, Chinasa left, Mary joined her.

"Look Kat, I don't think is ever going to happen" Chinasa said

"Well, what more?" Kate shrug her shoulder, Mary sat on a pavement painting her nails, Chinasa and Kate sits on the bench

"Efa, is out of the country" Chinasa said

"When?" She ask curiously

"Is been about couple of months or so. some agent help her, she told me on phone, before she left" she demonstrate. Mary attention was drawn, she stop everything she was doing

"How sure are you, how did she saved money?" so curious.

"That's her business, I'm just happy for her" she brutal

" Daniella's birthday party, that is coming" she tact smiling

"Of course, I heard about" she said smiling

"And?" Her eye fix on her

"Of course, I will be there, even if she doesn't invite me, I'm already invited" she tact, adjust her wear.

"Big sis, I'm going with you" Mary chant

"With who?" she ask, her ears wide

"with you" she retorts

"you said with who again?" she ask, her hand on his ear

"with you" Mary repeats, her voice drank, she knew her repeating same word means, she wasn't welcome

"Nasa babe, she can come" Kate tact

"Where, Danielle birthday party, you're not serious" she caution, gives her a straight look.

"What do you mean?" she retorted, fix her eye on her

"I'm going, what's there" Mary groan her eyes stares like a cat, about to cry. That look she gives Chinasa, that wins her over, to accept to do something or lure her into agree with her

This time. Chinasa didn't give in. "Not with me, Kate will take you with her" she confront her

"What's wrong, why can't she come?" She query

"So you want to hear something from my mouth" she grunt. Leaving, It's a surprised. Chinasa doesn't go anywhere, without taken Mary, both clubs and party. "Daniella's birthday party". was for only mature and experience people like them, Mary is just pushing up to get to her level. Daniella's party is a club, a lot of nasty things are done. It's like the movie hungry game. Chinasa is not willing to take the risk of exposing her little sister.

"I'm damn serious, you aren't going anywhere" she caution. walking into the house, Mary was shocked. Chinasa has never given her "NO" as an answer. She noticed the seriousness on her face, she rush to Kate

"What's this I need to know?" she ask

"Nothing, just not meant for you" she retorted. Mary was so curious, she decided to found more about the party, the date and time. Her research get her the information, it was just a clubhouse, it also called "the wild house", she can't miss the fun. She spent most of the time getting more useful information about the place, since Chinasa wouldn't take her there.

"Of course I can handle it" she thought herself

It was Friday night, Chinasa sneaking out, didn't want Mary to notice. Chinasa is seen frequently at home, ever since Mary became her partner in crime, it's her responsibility to protect her and watch her every moves. Mary was almost her height, and they have much resemblance, but chinasa is natural light skin colour, Mary is just starting up her bleaching skills, you might mistakes them to be twins.

Mary has already agreed with her friends to attend the club, Chinasa ordered an Uba driver who will pick her up. Mary waited to be sure she was out of the picture before she left.

They arrived at 8:43pm with her two friends. Immediately she step in. It was another world entirely, the only sound heard was the music, it was so loud that it can bring down a building. They only being dressed decent was the male gender, their decent was for the fact the wore clothes some only saggy trouser, as you can see their inner wear, some of them their shirts unbuttoned. Women with decent wear was just wearing a tube, some bra and pants others completely out of wear. It's worst than Sodom and Gomorrah. Mary and her friends wears was decent enough to prove they are newbies, Mary felt she has seen it all, she's no longer "a small girl", as some of her sisters friends will describe her, she entertain her eye well enough, to describe what "Danielle's birthday party" looks like. "This is indeed, sin City" as her mother will describe the night clubs, when she sees this place what will she call it, she said to herself

They finally found a place to sit, they've to snug their self into the building, she didn't see the need of dancing. Chinasa eyes was as sharp as CCTV, once she caught her that's the end of it all, she wanted to make sure she found her before she caught her, but the place was so gigantic that it will be hard to be found. It was dark enough to even see any one's face, the light moves from one end to another. Some group of boys was sights, each time the light comes caught their faces, their stares goes to their direction. One of them stares with a shisha in his mouth, the other pulling a full bottom of alcohol down his mouth, the next sip from his glass cup, it numbered her crew

"Those guys are staring at us?" one of her friend said,

"Yes, I know" Mary brutal

"When a man stares at you it means, he wants you" the other said

Mary look at her so baffle "And you want us to jump into them" she grunt

"I'm just saying" she brutal glare at her

"You're just saying, be careful" Mary retorted, it shows she was getting scared, it was her first time being independent from her sister, Fear took over here. Chinasa as sits her down many times to lecture her about club boys. Some are fraudster, who are looking for some lady to use their body for ritual, others are cultists who are there to kill and destroy things, she has also point their lives style. In this case she can't dictate cause all are same.

"Halo ladies, they guys over there needs your attention" The waitress said. who looks just like a stripper said to them, leaves immediately.

"Come on girls, let's go" one of them said. Standing as the other joined, before Mary could say a word, she was left with no option that to joined them. They share themselves among they guys, they were Chinasa age as Mary took time to look at them. She became more frightened, she quivered. Her eye searched the room for her sister, even if she see her friends, it's a relief, she will feel more save. Now she wishes Chinasa was here, she have had enough, she just want to go home. Even if they were there, it was as easy as to walk blind than it was to found someone, in such a place.

"What can I offer, a pretty young lady like you?" The Guy said.

She inhale so deep, and she release herself, "Nothing" she managed to say. A hand cross her waist, she was just like a prey, as she stares back at the devilish look she was getting, the face was innocent enough, to believe what ever he says.

"I would like a chilled drink and suya" one of her friends said,

"Tasha has already place an order" she mumbled to herself, the other girl was already served what she other, she never knew this friends of her, till this very day, she felt betrayed.

"Why don't you order for something, your friends has already taken an order" the guy tact, she looks at him, he was smiling she noticed he has a gap teeth.

"I'm fine" she retorted, returning the smile.

"Definitely, you need to take something" he made the order for her. Known of her friends show concern of what price they were going to pay, they knew it was going to end on ."one night stand" it wasn't her fear. she has something to protect herself, she has a feeling they weren't in a save hand. But she was left with no options, than to be conscious of what's happening. Her order was served, she has to eat to get ready for what might be the outcome. She eats and take some drinks, it was like everything was going normal. She starts feeling dizzy, she felt like her body was shot down, everything in her body went blackout, her eye keep locking, a hand comes from the back romancing her, pouring kissing all over her, she try to fight it but the body was too strong, she give in.

"I can't stop thinking of what I would do to her" he tact smiling,

"Look I want her too" another voice said, it was sounding like it was resulting to a fight

"Ok, everyone will have her, is turn by turn" they finally settled there fight. "So what will happen to the other girls?" he inquire

" They're just a scrap, let's just trash them here" another voice said.

Mary felt her body been moved, finally settled on a soft layer, It's a bed. hand unzipping her wears, The other hands romancing her. She felt something going down her beneath, She inhaled so deeply, moaned, as soft lips keep peaching around her body. She was too weak to respond or react to what was going on, they took turn on her, at least they took some liquid to keep them going. She knew what they where doing to her, she was took weak to fight, she couldn't scream or try to set herself free, She hated her body. At some point she felt like pins was injected all over her body. she try to tell them to stop, she opened her mouth words couldn't come out, if her words could her save her, this is the time. She managed to opened her eyes, they look just like a hungry Beast who is devouring a prey. she don't want to see them, she shut her eye, tears was her only comfort, as it keep flowing down her cheeks. She felt like she was in another planet, where air was hard to get, she struggled and struggle to breathe it was like there was something inhibiting air from getting down her nostril, she opened her mouth same, she keep fighting. She start feeling sleepy, for a moment her body felt at rest, peaceful and calm.

"She isn't breathing" A guy said, place his hand on her neck

"That's not true, she can't, no way" 2nd Guy, still on top of her

"This girl is dead, she's dead" place his head on her chest, the 3rd Guy said "her body is cold" he added

"We need to live this place, before someone found out" the 1st Guy said, pulling his trouser, as he struggles to puck it up

"What happens to her body?" The 3rd Guy said,

"You will sleep here with her" The 2nd Guy, already dressed, leaving

"See this guy, you better hurry before someone caught you" he grunt, buttoning his shirt.

Adex walk into the scene, Kaima rush to him, clutch her two hands so tight around his neck, she place her head on his chest, more the tears keep rolling down her cheek, he round her waist. Kaima was so desperate to get a consolation, her friends and neighbours couldn't give her the comfort she need. She was so excited when she saw Adex, he was the only one who could quench the fire burning in her heart, she invent so much hatred for Chinasa that she doesn't want to see, or have anything to do with her. Adex just finished his second semester exam. His in 300 level in the university of Lagos, his studying, mass communication. So luck he got a job at a news paper company where he write report for some of the things that happened round the school and environment entirely and get paid, he owned a blog he reports an event an get his money, he was the one in charge of a school broadcasting program. He pays his school bills through the money he earn, he don't depend on his mother or anyone, he also make money in helping others students in doing some work for them. which make it seen like he came from a rich family, He is more credited than most of the students, he was living comfortable than most other students. He has grown more mature than before, beard have taken over his face, he make sure he keep it low and attractive, his dimple and red lips, makes him looks so adorable and charming. Sometimes Kaima developed fears each time she calls, and he don't pick, her mind keep running into thought of what he might be doing.

She had believed so much rumours in school, than what Adex could tell her, they had issues many times because of her thoughts, when she expressed her feelings. She believes she's not the only girl, Adex might have another girl, who has taken her space, she must be beautiful than her and since she's just an O'Level diploma holder, Adex is just playing a fool of her, pretending it was just her.

She believes in the quote "All men are cheater" but in her own case he will always come back and she will welcome him with arm wide opened.

She snob "Is ok, you will be fine" he console her, petting her. It was like that was the comfort she wanted, she felt a little big relief, she deep herself in his body, she wasn't terrified by what might be the outcome if Nnenna caught them. she felt that was what she needed and was never letting go.

"She's just a little girl, why did they do this to her" she said in tears.

"I'm here. Ok, the will face the law, they will never go Scout free" he condo her. Wipes her tears with a handkerchief he pull from his back trouser pack

"I blame her for this. she cause it!!" she groan

"Hey, don't blame anyone for what happened, you don't know her side of story, you need to hear from her first" he caution. Adex has always take judgement fairly, no matter who is involved, he would had study Computer Engineering, but his father's death has driven him to go for Mass Communication, in search to expose the illegal affairs of people In the administration.

"She misled her, lure her into it" she sits on the bench, he joined her, he didn't want to keep arguing with her, that wasn't the moment . Emeka walk in from the room, his eye reddish and wept, walk down the stairs,

"They aren't getting away with my little sister death" he snort, he wipes the tears as it glide down his cheek

"Eme!, Eme!..., look is better we let the police do their job. please let's not take law into our hands, I know it's hard for you" he caution, Emeka squat down, buried his face on his hands, he struggle to hold the tears it keep dripping. A cloud brings us to the flashbacks

"Where did you get this money?" Emeka groan asking. After Nnenna has scowl him for is failure and handicap, over the family bills. How good he is in consuming, because he was asking her for money, he left too furious. Mary over heard them, decide to assist with the little one she had

"Don't you want it again, should I take it back" she grunt

"But how did you got it, who gave you this money" he exclaimed

"I will change my mind o…" she moaned, he took it from her, as he watch her walk inside the house

Another flashback

"Let me see you" he yell "where are you going by 8:00pm"

She frown "what did I do, what?" she said, a hot tears glide down her eye

"One more word from you" he lift his hand, She bend to pick her phone

"I know how you feel, I understand you but you can't do anything now. now the police is now involved" he console

"What are they going to do, bring her back" he yell, push him so aggressive, it almost cost a fight. Kaima have to come in, consoling him, Emeka glare at Adex for a while, he left

"Where is her corpse, which mortuary is she?" he ask

"St John mortuary" she retort, wiping her tears

"where is mommy?" he ask curiously

" she's in" she exclaimed

"We need to stop Emeka from doing anything stupid, he won't go Scot free, if he do something stupid" he caution. Going into the house, Kaima Joined him.

Adex has became part of their family ever since, he and Kaima became couple. Yet Nnenna know nothing about them, it's a secret shared with her siblings, Nnenna only know him as Bolade elder brother but yet, Kaima and Bolade are not in good term. There friendship brought both family together but the friendship was no longer there. Nnenna was not so attached with her children affairs. She put her efforts more on there daily bread, that was something, the little business she was running could afford but still not enough to give them three square meal. They were left to provide for themselves, everyone in the hustling Field. She never had time to speak with them, than to notify them on encounter with life. The only time she sits down with them was after late Maize Okorie's death. Ugo joined Kaima to hawk on the street, Mary took up from Chinasa, Emeka depend on building, which is just a petty reward. Mary was just fifteen and will be clocking sixteen in few days.

"I told her not to go, I did." pulled her wig, place her hands on her head, her eye swallow, Kate sits besides her. Consoling her, she tact.

"It's not your faults" she console her, she looks at her in a disappointing way

"Than who is to be blame?, no one. everyone is pointing me" pause. close her hands In her mouth. "My mom, she could never forgive me, she will curse the day she give birth to me. Mary would have been alive if she listen, just listen but she didn't" she cried loud

Chinasa didn't attend the party, she went to a friend party, which was nothing like, "Daniella's birthday party". It was her first intention before, her friend's party came up. Coming back the next day, a shout coming out from their home, She saw Natasha and Anna, Mary friends. Emeka and Kaima running out of the house, it was like a race everyone trying to over take the other, she over heard Nnenna shouting.

"Mary, what have the done to my Mary" in Language, it was like something like a cold shrivelled her from hair to toe, she felt like everything in her body shut down, tears tripping down her eye, she didn't know what was happening but she knew something was wrong. She don't know if she's to go into the house or joined them.

She walk into they room Mary was lied, she felt cold, it was like she was freezing at that very spot she was. Emeka and Kaima was just sitting at the edge of the bed. tears was like water running down Kaima's eyes, as she scan her little sisters dead body, a doctor running a check up on her. Emeka despite being a Man couldn't let his sex deceive him, he couldn't fight back the tears, tears was just making way down his cheek, Kaima seeing Chinasa was like seeing the devil. she walks to her release a hot sanded slap on her cheek, for the first time Kaima stand Chinasa, for her to raise her hand on her it took her years to summon courage. Chinasa couldn't fight back because she knew it was nothing to compare with the pains she has cost her family, the slap was like an air blow on her cheek. If it was a gun shot, she will still be alive till the bullet has shut down her body system, she Won't still feel it, even if it killed her, her soul was completely out of her body, she couldn't even feel her own body. all she felt was the pains Mary was going through, what it was like for poor little Mary, her screams, the tears dropping down her cheek. It was like Mary was still alive, her eye opened, her body still fresh. Kaima hit her the second time, hitting and pushing her, she still didn't feel like something was happening, some of the people present, has to drag Kaima out of the room to stop the chaos. She said a lot of things but she heard none, she knew Kaima was saying something but it was all coming to her like Mary's Voice. The Doctor turn to Emeka saying something, she saw his mouth moving but all came like little Mary's voice, immediately The doctor close Mary's eyes which was wide opened. it was like Chinasa was tap, she became conscious. She Moves like someone was pushing her from the back, as if she was counting her step, she sits beside her, touches her face, it was cold. she buried Mary's face on her chest, weeping so bitterly. Mary was still naked but was covered with a blanket

"Black Snake we understand your pains" 1st Guy condole

"She was such a little Angel, so peaceful to be with,"2nd Guy expressed. with a stick of cigarette, almost burning into his finger

"It still baffles me, How do they feel hurting that poor girl " 3rd guy empathize

The 1st Guy, blow on air, the stick of cigarettes he sip was almost at the yellow line, he took a long sip, trash it as he match it with his feet, till the flame became invisible.
