That wasn’t going to happen. She barely knew Jo, and of course there were too many relatives and colleagues of her mother’s on hand to be running in and out of Josiane Avery’s hotel room. If it was just her, off at a conference or something, Valeria wouldn’t care who saw. Right now, in this time and place, she had to be extra cautious with that closet door.

Finally, she wasn’t going to be able to put her feet up and rest because the moment she got back to her room, her mother and sister came knocking on her door. She’d hoped they might give her enough time to at least let her hair down and maybe take off her heavy earrings, but no.

Valeria let them into the room and they sprawled out on her couch, exhausted. Valeria plastered a smile onto her face. Did they see any irony in this scenario at all? She didn’t see any evidence to that effect, but that didn’t mean much. Whether or not they understood she was exhausted wouldn’t have anybearing on their expectations of her.
