4 Chapter 4: Hellish Heels.

"What the hell am I still doing here," Amy thought as she walked in front of Kiya, heading for the Maintenance building, with a calm expression on her face.

"I have no idea what we should do and why are we still going to check on the generator when we should be running out of the building screaming in fear for our lives,"

Thoughts like this kept appearing in Amy's mind as she tried to appear to be in control for both their sakes to prevent them from falling apart.

They practically sped to the Maintenance building and got there in no time only to find out that the door was locked.

"Allow me," said Kiya from behind as she pulled two long decorative pins from her hair.

"I didn't think you would be skilled at such a thing," Amy said, wondering why Kiya would take the time out to learn such a thing.

Kiya smirked a little before responding.

"There are a lot of things you don't know about me," she said moving closer to the door.

Amy stepped aside as she watched Kiya inject the two pins into the locks and was shocked to see and hear as the door snapped open.

They quickly entered and the first thing Kiya did was lock it behind them.

Even though it wasn't a really strong door, Kiya still felt safer with it in between her and the corpses she had seen.

They both passed the employee offices and went down a set of stairs that supposedly led to the basement.

None of them had ever been to the maintenance department and they had used the light from their phones to look around before deciding on where they thought the generator would be.

They both got down to the basement and were delighted to finally see the big generator they had been looking for. Amy quickly started to look for the switch while Kiya looked around the basement with the torchlight of her phone.

Her battery was very low but she wasn't too bothered about it since they were about to switch on the backup generators.

She kept on looking around and noticed various papers posted on the notice board with horrible scribbles on them. Whosoever wrote it seemed to have been in a hurry.

Kiya moved closer to read it and barely noticed Amy who suddenly raised her voice with joy.

"Finally, I found the switch. I really need to learn how to operate mechanical devices. If it was a life and death issue, and danger was down here, I would have been dead by now," she continued talking out loud mostly to herself.

By now, Kiya was already trying to read the words poorly scribbled on the papers.

It seemed to be the same sentence written over and over again without any spaces between them.

After taking one of the papers off the wall and shining the light from her phone on it, she was finally able to read it.

"Do not turn on the light," she finally read out loud.

She turned around and immediately shouted at Amy trying to stop her from pulling down the switch.

"Wait..." Kiya sharply shouted but Amy wasn't paying attention and using all her energy she had been trying to pull the heavy switch down.

At first, she thought it might have been stuck but she couldn't help but smile as she succeeded in pulling it down.

She smiled and turned towards Kiya as she heard the generator start to whirl making a loud noise as all the lights in the basement came on.

However, Amy was surprised to see Kiya with a worried look on her face as she came closer to her holding a piece of paper which she quickly passed on to her.

"It says there that we shouldn't turn on the light," said Kiya as she looked fearfully at the light that shown brightly all around the room.

After also reading it, Amy understood why Kiya became suddenly afraid. With the newly lit environment, Amy could even make out the red drops of blood sprinkled on the sides of the paper.

"Let's go upstairs and see what's happening outside. If there's danger then we can come back here to turn off the generator," said Amy knowing that Kiya would also agree with her suggestion.

They couldn't just switch off the lights back without any valid reason except for a few pieces of paper with no idea who wrote them.

"This whole blackout might even be someone's idea of a joke," Amy thought before solemnly remembering the dead people on the second floor and thinking how they would definitely never get the joke.

Kiya nodded and together they headed outside.

Unlocking the door, she had locked upon entering, they both walked out into a brightly lit corridor that led to the main office area on the second floor.

Trying to avoid the corpses in the large cubicle area, Kiya and Amy headed for a window in the opposite direction, a place that looked clean and didn't look dangerous: The security office.

It was also a big department but the main reason why Kiya and Amy decided to go there was because of the huge windows there.

From there, they could easily look outside and discover what was going on.

Afraid of the unseen danger around them, they walked quickly and got to the wide-open door of the department. They walked towards the window to peer at the darkness surrounding them hoping to discover anything strange that might put them in danger if they decided to go out.

They were only a few steps away from it when they saw a human body throw itself at the reinforced glass.

"Aaah," Kiya immediately screamed and this time Amy didn't care to stop her.

Amy could hear her heart racing inside her chest as she watched the mindless human torso outside the building with black eyes bang its head over and over again on the reinforced glass.

As if attracted by the noise and the light, they started to notice as other human bodies outside the windows of the building did the same.

They watched rooted to the spot in surprise as the numbers of bodies multiplied by the second as they clawed at the glass and at each other.

Amy was still watching, wondering what to do when she heard a crack from her left side and watched a human hand scratched and bleeding from too many wounds tear past through the glass breaking it open.

Seeing no need to think as she saw the danger they were in, she grabbed Kiya's hand and screamed at the top of her voice.

"run!!!" She yelled pulling a shocked Kiya along as they both ran out of the security department.

Kiya was terrified. She couldn't understand what had happened to make the mindless humans with black eyes the way they were.

As they ran back to the Maintenance building hoping to switch off the lights and be able to get behind a locked door, they could clearly hear the sounds of more glass breaking as the sounds of running feet behind them could be heard.

They were already at the corridor leading to the maintenance department they were aiming for when suddenly Kiya slipped and fell.

"I had a feeling these heels were going to be the death of me," thought Kiya a second after she heard the heel on her left shoe break.
