Rainy days

"Wait, he asked you on a date!" Shaneil exclaimed from the other end of the phone.

"Yeah, but I told him I'd think about it." Rain replied back. Rain had just gotten home from Darnell's place.

After dinner Rain had spent 3 hours explaining to Darnell how to put up a tent and how he couldn't bring his Xbox in the wilderness. He was being really impossible. For a smart guy, Darnell acted pretty dumb.

When Rain had gotten home, her mother wasn't even there. Her Mom was never home much nowadays. Rain never complained about it much. Though it did make the house feel lonely. Her mother was a single parent. Rain knew better than to open her mouth and selfishly complain. Sometimes life just wasn't fair.

"WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU'LL THINK ABOUT IT!" Shaneil screeched. Rain winced as her eardrums we're being assaulted and moved the home away from her ear.

"Can you maybe calm down a little?" Rain asked calmly. She heard Shaneil mutter out an apology and nodded her head satisfied. "Much better. I mean even though I was hanging out with him for a while now, it just feels as though I don't really know him well enough." Rain explained.

"The whole point of a date is so that you can get to know him better, idiot." Shaneil chided. She swears that Rain could act just like a child sometimes.

"But I mean wasn't this like... out of the blue. It completely caught me off guard." Rain admitted insecurely.

"Stop being a chicken, give him a chance. It's just one date. If you don't like it, then you'll know what to do after." Shaneil said.

"Maybe she's right. I mean what could go wrong anyway. Besides, I've known Tye for a while now. I think I like him. Maybe that's enough for right now." Rain thought to herself.

She chatted with Shaneil a little more after that about some plans for the next week before getting off the phone. Rain was relieved. Shaneil could talk for hours and Rain knew that if she stayed on the phone any longer, sleep was going to become completely inevitable. Looking at the clock, it was now around 2 in the morning. She really did need to get some sleep. But I really didn't want to right now, not with all these thoughts going through her head.

Rain leaned against the headboard of her bed and turned on the tv with the remote. Rain was flipping through the channels looking for anything to watch, not paying attention. She almost gave up when she couldn't find anything but then something caught her eye.

"Okay look you don't have to do this. Just put it down."

"I have to. You don't understand. I have to do this." The man walked closer to the edge of the building with the woman pleading for him to stop.

Rain turned up the volume becoming interesting.

"Do this for what?" That's my son. He's mine." The woman said, falling to her knees with her hands together in a praying position.

"Yours," He scoffed and let out a hysterical laugh. "That's exactly why–you never changed. Not everything is yours. He's my son too! I raised him! You were the one who walked out on us!" He yelled.

A little wailing sound was heard coming from the man's arm and he quickly rocked the little human's body in his arms back and forth gently. The woman started to bawl quietly.

"It's okay baby, I promise you I'm gonna make everything okay. Daddy's never gonna leave you. I promise." He mumbled to the baby in his arms.

"Let him go, please." She whimpered.

The man looked at her and smiled with no humor in his eyes. "I'd rather die with him first." Then he slowly turned back around to the edge.

"No wait!" Cried out the woman pulling out a gun. The man froze and looked at her shocked.

"You gonna shoot us now?" He let out a small chuckle. "Then baby shoot on."

Her hands shook and small sobs interrupted from her body. "Don't make me do this, please. I don't want to. Just let my baby go. Please let him go." She cried out.

"I can't do that. He's my baby too. But I can't do that." A gunshot went off and the woman cried out in horror as the man fell off the cliff.

Rain turned the TV off. Her heart was in her palm and she was staring in disbelief. She sat up confused, shaking her head.

"What was that?" She asked herself, wondering out loud. Rain hated how they ended it. It wasn't fair. What happened to the baby? Who got shot by the gun? Who pulled the trigger in the first place?

It was an array of questions without answers and Rain's head was turning sideways about it. She felt hopeless but didn't want to finish watching it. She felt like she had just entered a Twilight Zone and was stuck there forever. But she still had questions.

Rain stared at the remote debating. She didn't know what she wanted to do. If she turned the TV back on she would most likely end up crying like a sponge full of water. If she didn't she would still have all of this confusion still in her brain. Rain kept staring at the remote coast.

"Yeah, I think I'll just go to bed now. Television is definitely not the same anymore, I guess." Rain said wanting to forget about everything she had just watched. Turning over in bed, Rain snuggled in her pillow and closed her eyes, falling asleep soon after.

Rain walked into school late. Her alarm didn't go off on time and she was still tired. This kind of felt like a Deja Vu moment that she didn't want to dwell on.

"Did you hear about Alex? I heard that he was about to kick off the football team again.

"Yeah, of course I did. Weston told me yesterday."

"Ew, you still talk to Weston. That's so gross."

"What can I say it still gives me...benefits."

Rain's face scrunched up as she heard the familiar voices in the hallway. It was too early to be dealing with them. Rain groaned quietly when she realized that she would have to walk past them to get to her destination.

Rain pulled her hoodie over her head and lifted a notebook to her face, trying to hide. She slowed her pace and looked at the lockers as she walked by. There was no way they would recognize her now.

"Rainy! Why are you hiding your face? Come over here." Peony called out. Rain let out a low groan of despair and put on a fake smile before turning around.

"Hi, Darcy and Peony." Rain greeted them.

"Rainy what are you wearing, you look awful," Darcy commented, ignoring Rain's greeting. "You're right she really does. Rainy, don't you know it's spring. Why are you wearing jeans and a hoodie? You look really distasteful right now." Peony said agreeing with Darcy.

Rain grinded her teeth together. "Maybe I just like wearing this. I didn't know wearing jeans was a crime." She said through clenched teeth.

Darcy waved her off. "Sure maybe it's not, but you could at least wear something that doesn't make you look like a granny."

"By the way Rainy, I heard something about you and I just wanted to know if the rumors were true or not. You will tell me won't you?" Darcy asked, batting her eyelashes.

"I don't know if I'm going to make it today, Jesus take the wheel." Rain thought, gripping the notebook in her hand tight.

"You know Tye the new boy. I heard that you two have been close. Is it true?" She asked innocently. "I don''t understand how any of that is your business." Rain said. Darcy frowned, looking offended making Rain roll her eyes.

"Rainy don't be hostile. It's just a question," Peony said looking at her manicured nails. "We're all friends here, right?"

Rain raised an eyebrow but didn't say anything, not wanting to let out a snide comment.

"Yeah, we're friends," Rain slowly said, laughing a little. "Look, I have a class to get to. You two should also be heading there instead of interrogating me. So I'm just gonna leave now."

With those words being said, Rain saluted them goodbye and went on her way. She didn't have time for their foolishness. People like that can't be reasoned with and Rain didn't want to waste her time.
