1 The thing she left

Start of Wet Season 1985...

DARK clouds loomed the once clear blue sky. A gust of cool wind followed with a strong scent of dry earth dampen with rain. Dry leaves, dirt and some clutter swirled with the air. The faint sound of thunder roared somewhere where rain might be pounding its soil, blessing the land with water, enough to supply hectares of ricefields.

He could imagine farmers happy with this impending downpour in their humble town of San Isidro. It was an event that was the most awaited each year which would soon send him along with his father and eldest brother to their own lands. It would be a time to mingle with their workers in planting rice, a thing he enjoyed eversince he was a kid. Something that was what most of his peers not know about him, because of his family's social standing in their town.

"I need to go home, Jenny. I don't have my umbrella with me. This coming rain is so wrong timing! Bye, best!" He heard someone said behind his back, hauling him out of his thoughts.

"Okay, best! Got to do this damn room cleaning, ugh! This is why I hate my surname! Be safe!" Replied another.

He then heard a lyrics of a song that been sung. He smirked as he had heard it being played by a regional FM radio station.

Madonna's Like A Virgin.

Contrary to the powerful, seductive way of the pop singer's singing was a much gentler version. The lyrics was sung in a slow rhythm phase of sweet-soft feminine voice which got him curious, making him turn sideways and check whoever it was.

A thing that he was too grateful he did. It bought him time to distance himself from being bumped to but, not fully.

She bumped on his arm.

"Ay, sorry! I did not see you." Said the girl with that familiar voice he heard earlier. He was to reply that it was okay, that he was standing at this corner of school building's corridor but stopped when she looked at him. He heard her let out a soft gasp. Her chinky eyes widened, an indication that she had recognized him. It was an act which was a contrary on his part for he did not know her or had not seen her around, ever. She had round dark-brown orbs ready to pop-out of those slits, which he found surprisingly cute he wanted to laugh. A faint dash of red colored her fair cheeks. She had a cute button nose and small cherry lips. He deemed her tall as the tip of her head, he think, was just under his nose.

"So-sorry, go-goodbye!" He heard her say pulling him off his observation. His brows furrowed with what she said then sprinted away from him. A feat that got him puzzled and rather surprised.

Just what the hell was that? He thought to himself.

Dismissing what had happened, he turned and felt that he had kicked something. His vision went downwards to his feet. An amused chuckle followed as he bent his body to pick the thing on the floor. He took a quick glance on it before he snuck it on his backpack.

Another gust of wind came, this time a little stronger than before. He must get going. He then search for his umbrella on his backpack to ready himself when the downpour comes.

He let out another amused chuckle when he could not find his purpose on his messy pile of books and papers in his bag. He realized then, that he too, forgot his own umbrella.

Seconds later, heavy rain had poured and he's stuck.
