His Life Without Her (6)

"Hello Sunny, how is she doing now?" I called my hired detective as soon as I was settled on my bed. It was my first Friday at South City.

Sunny was originally Dan's man. He drives huge delivery trucks that howls construction materials to construction sites.

"Boss, they are out today. It must be an excursion. The store owner here said they're visiting the ancient Spanish Building in the Eastern province. " Sunny answered promptly.

"Okay, next time, make a way to follow her. If not, what am I paying you for? I'll send a car for you to use incase you need it. Just make sure she is safe." I said.

"Don't worry boss, she is not a reckless lady. I actually befriended the husband of one of her friends here. I was having a shot at his home one time when his wife arrived with her bunch of friends. We invited them to drink with us. At first I thought she will refuse but later as her friends started taking shots, she joined in. " Sunny narrated.

"Did she get drunk?" I asked. My mind flashed back in the bar when I found her tipsy and angry. Unfortunately, that was the only memory I have with us being together.

"No boss, she said she doesn't want to get drunk because she's afraid she might confess her real feelings to someone. Apparently, one of the boys likes her but my friend said they are cousins. Anyway, the way I looked at them, they're really close and a bit intimate." Sunny said.

I felt pain in my heart and my mind getting disoriented again. I heaved a deep sigh trying to compose myself.

"Sunny..." I tried to make up my thoughts.

"Boss!" He answered.

"They're classmates which means they're both Architecture students right? " I asked.

"I'm not sure of that boss, I heard that the boy is a Civil Engineering student. Maybe they just have some similar subjects together. What are you planning to do, boss?" Sunny asked.

"I want you to find a way to get his transcript of records." I instructed Sunny. "My plan is to offer him a job in the company after his graduation." That way, I can supervise his every move and make his schedule. That would be by April or May next year.

" Okay sure boss. That's easy! Do you know he is popularly known as NPU's Math Wizard? They say he is a genius." Sunny said.

"That's good then. Okay, do your job and call me if anything happens. Dan will send the car for you soon." I said then hung up.

Those pieces of information worried me. How I wish I could just let her know that I'm just right here listening to every report about her.

....

As the days rolled on to months, my job was becoming more and more complicated. There were several intelligence reports concerning drug smuggling. Several reports of drug cooking laboratories which are registered as warehouses of private companies. I also needed to check the loyalty and dedication of my subordinates to make sure they are not being bribed by these big time drug lords.

I made it a point to call Sunny every Friday night or Saturday morning. As long as his report satisfy my concerns, I didn't worry much and I worked at peace somehow.

......

It was now March. According to Sunny, the graduation will be on the 28th of March. Also, I vaguely recall the date but I remember my love's birthday is March. She will now be a 20 year- old architect. Me on the other hand will turn a 26 year-old police major next August. I couldn't wait to see her. I wanted to clear my schedule that week so I could sneak to the north and witness my love's graduation. I couldn't apply for a leave since I have not yet reached a year of service in that particular city. I could just make up a valid reason to make it appear as an official trip.

However, two days before my planned date, my men raided one of the warehouses of a big shipping company in the city. This has long been under surveillance but we waited for the right time to barge in. When I got to the scene, there were swarms of both local and national news reporters. I had to be there to support my men and to give statements in case they might need some statements from my office. This is one of the major operations conducted under my mandate so I needed to make sure there are no loose ends.

Assessing the situation, I was forced to cancel my 'official trip' to the north. I could just call Sunny to update me regarding the graduation of my dear one.

"Boss, rumor says that your woman might be one of the cum laude." Sunny said excitedly.

"I'm not surprised at all, I know she's brilliant. Give me more exciting news!" I demanded but deep inside I was cheering for my love's achievement.

"What exciting news do you want boss? That your woman will graduate and marry her cousin? I heard that from my friend." Sunny's words poured on me like ice cold water.

"Are you sure ? How did you know of that? Make sure you are not only gossiping Sunny!" I was irritated.

"I heard that's the plan, but we'll see how things will improve. Who knows what miracles could happen!" Sunny choked in silent laughter.

"I'm not paying you to fool me! By the way you never mentioned the name of that cousin of hers. What's his name? Have you sent his transcript to the office already?" I asked.

"His name is Stanley Law boss, I sent it already long ago. I can also get an updated one after their graduation if you want?" Sunny answered.

"Okay, get an updated copy and send it to my brother's office asap!" I said then hung up.
