1 Prologue

They never thought this would happen, never dared to imagine. They were together finally together. Her coffee brown eyes shined brighter than the stars and Alika and Anthony were happy. Until it happened. In an instant things changed and barriers far greater than the two of them kept them apart. Alika dashed down the stairs eyes filled to the brim with tears." You lied to me " , she screamed and screamed till her throat ran dry. Anthony pleaded with her to come back. He tried to make her see it was a mistake, a misunderstanding , he had not known their true intentions. It was too late. Alika continued to run only to discover she was now being chased; but not by the one she loved. But, by those who would love to see her dead.

Anthony saw the gathering mob and grew afraid. Afraid for her, afraid for their future, and afraid for the capabilities the mob possessed. As Anthony raced to catch up with Alika a shot rang out. It was so loud, clear, and crisp that time felt as if it had stopped. Rain started to pour; but as realization crept into Anthony's mind it felt as if every inch of him had been scorched by the suns cruel rays. The light of the world did not shine as brightly as the light in her eyes had. Anthony  approached Alika and watched her in horror as she cradled her bullet wound. He signed to her "I love you" and rested his head on her chest. Alika was determined to keep fighting, to keep alive for him. They layed there that way, with sound of sirens putting melody to the rhythm of their heartbeats becoming one.

My mother always said the birds you love the most soar highest when you let them free. I never knew what she meant by that until I gave this girl my wings. ~ Anthony
