Chapter 104: Drax's Stupid Woman-2 (A Side Story)

Drax must have driven for hours before he parked outside of his hotel. Everything Mills said was true. Her agreeing to date him was a part of a contract, and he was stupid to have forgotten that. In hindsight, he also agreed that his behavior was no less than creepy. He had become so consumed by winning her heart that he had not considered whether it already belonged to someone else. Drax did not consider himself a weak person but in the face of his first heartache he felt hopeless.

Having nothing else to do in Sani, Drax tried to schedule a flight back home for the next day, but cold weather in Pan had grounded most flights due to ice on the tarmac. The earliest flight he could safely catch was a full two days wait away. Not knowing what to do with his grief, Drax found himself wondering what kind of man Mills had given her heart to. Squashing his last bit of pride, Drax made a call to his brother Cade. He needed his help to find out everything he could about the men around Mills. He couldn't have her, but he wanted to know who did.

----

Drax received a call from Adir in the morning, he had heard what happened from Fiori and then he had gotten a bit more information from Cade. He was concerned about his brother, but he was more concerned that there was an outside source influencing Mills' decision.

"Drax, think carefully, did nothing really happen during your date? Was there anything at all that made you look twice?"

Drax thought for a while. The only thing he could think of was Mills' reaction to him being addressed by his formal title. He and his siblings were left baffled. Cade had already had the information they needed and according to what they found on Mills, the only men she was regularly with was her brother and a few of her subordinates. None of whom they believe she could ever be in love with.

"Adir, don't worry yourself about it," Drax said. "I'll go back to work soon, and we can forget about all of this." He continued.

Adir would have like nothing more than that, but there was one thing he was keeping from his brother. He had already told their mother about Mills, and they were all expecting her at their father's birthday celebration. There was no way he was going to find a way out before that day arrived. He absolutely had to figure out what was going on.

----

Adir landed in Sani a few hours later. He had to take a helicopter, as he was unable to catch a flight due to freezing weather. It was still early when he arrived, so he had his driver take him directly to the facility where he knew Mills worked. He was stopped by armed guards at the gate and when he asked for Miss Mills Baker, the guards exchanged glances but did not make a move. Stubborn, Adir leaned against his car and waited. After about fifteen minutes, another set of armed guards escorted him inside.

Adir was led to a small waiting room with only one exit and no windows. He could sense the presence of someone behind him just as he heard a gun cock. With the cool metal pressed against the back of his head, Adir slowly raised his hands while chuckling lightly.

"I see why my brother likes you," he said, but Mills had not been paying attention.

"Who are you, who sent you and what do you want?" Adir answered all three questions in one go.

"My name is Adir Staton, no one sent me, and I just want to talk to you." Mills stepped back a few paces.

"Staton?"

"Miss Baker, if you could please put down your weapon," Adir said. "I could have disarmed you several times just now, but I am just here to talk." Mills slowly walked around to see the face of the man and he looked like a slightly older, shorter, skinnier version of Drax. She relaxed her arms, but she did not put away her gun.

"Did your brother ask you to come here?" She said and Adir shook his head. His hands were still in front of him and he asked her if they could sit. She cautiously agreed.

"Why did you break up with my brother?" He asked, and Mills shot him a confused look.

"Was I ever his girlfriend?" She quipped.

"Well, that's what I told our mother," he said, and Mills' eyes widened.

"Why did you do that?" She questioned.

"Because of the way my brother talked about you. I thought you two would at least date for a year," he responded.

Mills did not really know how to continue with this conversation. Sure, the man mentioned her to his parents, but once they figured out that she was not from a prominent family, she felt they would make life hard for them.

"Miss Baker, is there someone threatening you?" Adir asked and he got a genuine laugh as response.

"It's nothing like that. I've already explained to your brother what's going on. Go and ask him."

"I did, and despite our best efforts, we can't seem to find the man you claim to love."

"You had me investigated?" Mills asked and Adir nodded.

"From the moment my brother mentioned your name," He said. "Miss Baker, you don't have to beat around the bush with me. I know my brother can be crass, but whatever he did please believe that our entire family will help you beat him as punishment." Mills arched an eyebrow.

"Your entire family?" She asked.

"Well, the ones that count," he said.

"Mr. Staton, you may be aware of my family background but do your parents? I would rather not create unnecessary drama within your family," Mills said.

"Is that what all of this is about?" Adir asked excitedly.

"Kind of," she admitted.

"Miss Baker, you don't give yourself enough credit," Adir said. "How many people can hold someone from the Lee group hostage and live to tell about it? Better than that, how many people can hold President Lee hostage and leave, unscathed after signing a multi-million-dollar contract? I think you may have underestimated the connections between the Lee's and the Staton's. If you're embarrassed by your family background, that's completely on you. Don't drag my family into it." He said and Mills scoffed.

'Am I the one embarrassed by my family?' She thought.

Hello! Just wanted to let anyone reading know that the next chapter is still part of the side story for Drax and Mills. I have no plans to give them a spin off, but they will have one or two more 'break-out' chapters to give us relief every now and then. I did not make these chapter auxiliary because the 'how' and 'why' are important in the future.

Thanks for sticking around!
