6 Slave Market

Mark followed Gan Ning and Little Tai to the Slave Market. The Market was between the Freight Warehouses and the small harbour.

The Market was inside a large warehouse building, which was well looked after compared to some of its neighbouring buildings. It was painted an off white and it kept its colour, even though it was near the sea air.

The doorway was a large archway, which a horse and carriage could travel through. Several people walked inside preparing for the days Slave trade.

Outside the warehouse were lots of people, busily running around, preparing for the days trade. A horse could be seen being watered, after an extensive trip pulling wagons.

"The slave traders normally purchase the slaves from us pirates, who capture them from trading ships. We try to avoid those that are from the Honda Kingdom, but you know.." Gan Ning smiled mischievously.

Little Tai looked at him and shook his head in disappointment. Although he was also a pirate, he didn't agree with slavery, the thought of having no freedom went against his pirate beliefs. Little Tai believed in freedom, peace and prosperity. Unlike Gan Ning who was mischievous and wanted fun and conquests.

Mark looked around at the people bustling around, there was a range of people, from sailors, workmen, shop owners and wealthy patrons of the town.

Gan Ning led the way and they headed through the Archway into the crowded Warehouse. There was a slightly raised stage with a grotesquely fat man parading around it. He looked down towards the newcomers as they entered. He was wearing a gold trimmed tunic, with gold rimmed pants. His hands were covered in jewellery and this man's look was that of immense wealth.

"Welcome to my trade hall newcomer, I am Marcus Licinius Crassus, Slave Trader extraordinaire." He shouted down to them.

"Hey Mr.Crassus, this is my new boss Mr.Mark." shouted Gan Ning in response, quickly introducing Mark to place himself in a better position.

Mark glanced at him knowingly, before facing the fat Crassus.

"Mark you say? A similar name to my good self, welcome. I hope you brought gold, as today is good day to buy." Crassus said excitedly.

He turned back to the centre of the stage before clapping his hands together loudly. The crowd quickly gathered beneath the stage to watch him.

"Today I have some fine specimens. I have men from far away lands, beauties from the east and some nice hidden surprises!" Crassus started. "I see in the crowd many familiar faces, and some new ones. I am excited to welcome you all to my trade hall, where we trade flesh for gold."

There was some laughter and clapping in the crowd, and Mark was blown away by his Crassus held his audiences attention. At the side of the stage a large cage was rolled in, which housed several chained people. Crassus continued to talk whilst Mark intently looked at the people inside.

Gan Ning nudged him suddenly. "Boss, it's about to get good, get your gold out and we can buy some men."

Mark didn't really want to buy slaves, he didn't agree with it. His head was telling him that you couldn't trust someone you has bought, and you couldn't just give them their freedom back when you had spent your gold on them.

The first chained person was dragged to the stage, He was a malnourished man, who didn't seem so have much hope left. His head was shaven and his clothing was dirty and torn.

"Who wants to buy this Slave, he is healthy and just 30 this year." Started Crassus, "He would work well in a mine or on a farm. Starting bid at 1 Gold."

"1 Gold Coin!" Shouted a sailor from the back, "Could do with some more rowers!"

Gan Ning laughed, "That is a horrid life to live."

"1 Gold Coin I hear, any higher? 2 Gold anyone?"

Mark felt something on his arm and looked across. Somewhere upon his travels a spider had made it's way up his arm. He had an irrational fear to small insects. He panicked and quickly smacked his arm with his other hand.

He moved his hand and noticed the spider had jumped off and ran away.

"2 Gold Coins to the clapping man!" shouted Crassus, smiling in Mark's direction.

Fuck, Mark thought! He didn't even bid.

"Boss, Boss!" Gan Ning whispered. "We aren't that desperate yet are we?"

Little Tai face palmed, dealing with the clumsy Mark and the dim Gan Ning was going to make his life difficult.

I didn't bid! Mark wanted to scream, but he couldn't as everyone was looking at this newcomer.

The sailor who he had outbid did not look impressed, it was an unspoken rule that you didn't outbid each other on the none desirable's. Mark bidding was questioning his authority.

"2 Gold and 50 Silvers!"The Sailor shouted, reclaiming his honour. He stared at Mark, waiting for him to bid again and test him.

"Sold!" shouted Crassus, happy to have made some money on someone he expected to give to the fighting pits afterwards.

A Slaver grabbed John Doe and dragged him to the Grumpy Sailor.

"You better be worth the money!" exclaimed the Sailor. Mark would have had sympathy, if not for reading the mans history.

After this sale, many more similar ones took place. Little Tai constantly frowned at the sales, but stood silently by Mark's side, he was a natural bodyguard, and his imposing structure gave Mark confidence.

Gan Ning had attempted to persuade Mark to bid multiple times, but Mark refused. He didn't agree with Slavery and even though he was interested to see the trade, he regretted coming.

Soon after the men had been sold, the women were brought up, there was only a minority of these, but their was a huge amount of money spent on them. The majority would spend their lives in brothels, field hands or helping around some of the houses.

The Trade was closing to an end, but before that Crassus announced his special sales.

"Next I have a young woman, violent through and through. She is the last of her tribe and is worth pretty coin to anyone that dares handle her!" he exclaimed.

A young woman was dragged to the stage, her face sneering with anger. She had long curly red hair and bushy red eyebrows. She was well built and would easily trounce Mark in a fight. She was curvaceous and her figure was far from hidden in her torn robes.

When Mark read her profile, he knew he had to recruit her.
