6 The Dark Side

Serenity's POV:

**It's the day that Serenity first enters John's school, so that means 1 day prior to the events in end of the last chapter.**

I walk timidly down the hallways, keeping my head forward the whole time.

"Hey! It's the new girl!" I hear a girl whisper, apparently not caring that I can hear her perfectly.

"She's cute..." I hear another lecherous guy say.

"Eww..! I heard she's mute!" His friend says.

"I happen to like them quiet..."

His friend just sighs. I can literally feel him rolling his eyes from where I am.

I then hear other comments that I would rather not say - if you know what I mean. Not all of them are about me, though. Mostly other people. Why do I feel like such an outsider here?

The lights are dimm as I walk nervously through the hallway. Papers litter the floor around me, and I try to avoid them at all cost, as to not make any more noise to attract attention. The sun barely illuminates the inside through the heavily tinted windows, that are making it's rays a bit greenish. The air is tight, like something might combust at any moment, and you can hear the doors slowly creaking open, even with the insufferable constant chatting. Come to think about it, this hallway is pretty eerie....

Suddenly, I feel a hand grabb me by my rist. I'm unable to scream (of course) as it drags me into an empty classroom.

I see a girl with perfect, round brown eyes that almost seem black and short cut black hair that looks almost blue in the light of the classroom. She's taller than I am.

"What were you doing there?" She suddenly asks, putting her hands on her hips. "Don't you know this is the dark side of the school? It's dangerous around here." She frowns slightly, almost looking hostile.

I just tilt my head to the side.

Seeing my confusion, she immediately introduces herself. "Sorry, I'm Charlie." She holds out her hand. After a few seconds, I bring out mine and she shakes it firmly, as if we were two businesswomen whom have just come to a fine negotiation. After that, she goes to sit on the surface of a nearby desk.

I take out my notebook and quickly write down what I want to say.

'My name is Serenity. I'm new here, so I don't know a lot about this school. What is the 'dark' side..?' I write.

"Oh!" She exclaims, placing her hand dramatically on her forehead. "You must be the new girl! Welcome to our school!"

Why are people so obsessed with new people here!?

She then proceeds to explain. "The dark side is the bad side of school. You know the shady places in the cities that you should avoid? Like back alleys or something?" I nodd. "Well, the dark side isn't any different. Bad things happen here." The girl named Charlie wears a serious expression as she tells me all this.

I gulp, imaging bandits stealing away an innocent person's wallet.

She suddenly laughs and slaps my shoulder. "Snrk.. Haha! You shouldn't seen your face!" She wipes tears from her eyes, talking to me like I'm an old friend. "I was just kidding! It isn't that bad!"

I frown slightly.

"Sorry, sorry..." She says, waving her right hand to fan herself, trying to cool down her laughter. Then her face becomes serious again. "But you should still be careful... Don't worry, I'm not from this side of the school. I'm from the so - called," She lifts both of her hands, making quotation marks with them. "'bright side'"

This kind of reminds me of the movies of Galaxy Wars... I wonder who's the Dark Waver in the dark side.

'May I ask... What are you doing here? I mean, if this place is that dangerous...' I write.

She blushes and looks away, seemingly thinking. "...Nothing." She says after a short silence.

The bell suddenly rings, and we both jump.

"Aah! I'm gonna be late!" Charlie yelps. "Quick, where's your next class?" She asks frantically.

'3-b' I write.

"And you don't know where it is, do you?" I shake my head, embarrassed. She sighs, then starts walking away. "Follow me." She says, gesturing her hand behind her back for me to follow her. "I'll take you there."

I smile happily, but she doesn't see it because she's still turned away from me.

Could this be a new friend?

As I follow Charlie happily, I don't pay attention to the creeping feeling that someone's watching me...

****

Later that day, in the evening...

Are my eyes deceiving me? How could this be? Have I died and gone to heaven?

This is so, so, unbelievable!

There's so much.. Blue!

Eyes shining, I take in the sight before me. A whole isle, packed with only blue things. I've never seen this before in my entire life!

"You must really like blue..." I hear someone say behind me.

*Whack!*

I turn around abruptly, forgetting someone was there, and end up slapping the person in the face with my hair. My eyes bulgde when I see who it is.

"Hey!" John exclaims, chuckling. "Be careful!"

'Sorry!' I write. I smile sheepishly.

"It's ok." He smiles warmly at me. But somehow, that smile doesn't seem all that genuine. Is he faking it?

'I seem to be saying sorry to you a lot, huh...' I write.

"Yeah..." John scratched the back of his head, still looking into my eyes.

Come to think of it, I've always thought that his eyes were dark grayish blue, but they're actually dark purple, which is a very rare eye color. Does it have something to do with his powers? I try to search for any hint of blackness that I saw earlier in his eyes, but I see none.

There's this weird feeling, though. I don't feel scared around him, considering what I've seen. I feel oddly comfortable. How come? Is it because of his kind attitude? But something about him still seems off.

I look into his strikingly beautiful eyes. I feel like I'm staring into an abyss that would just swallow me whole, and possibly steal my soul. His pupils look like two black holes in the center of two purple galaxies, with specs of bright stars lighting them in just the right places.

My heart beats just a little faster as I continue to unintentionally stare deep into those capturing eyes of his. They hold a slight danger or hostility in them that I can feel, but underneath it all I feel like I see a little flicker of goodness in him. It seems like he has been hurt before, and that's why he's so-

Aah! I'm doing it again! I read too much into people. I'm sure it's just a hunch, anyway.

Wait. What if his power is to hypnotize people?! I hurriedly look away, just in case my theory's proven true. It's also so that I can stop reading him.

Even as I avoid my gaze for precautionary reasons, I still feel heat creep up my cheeks.

***

The next day... In the evening and in the house...

*Singing* "La, la, la~" I sing softly as I feel my feet lift off from the ground and into the air. I'm levitating. I feel gentle waves caressing me and wrapping around my waist as if to support me in mid-air. I've slowly gotten used to the tickling sensation that it gives over time. I close my eyes as relish in the feeling.

I'm in my room and practicing my powers for the time that I have them. One day, I'll be able to get them back and keep them for ever.

My throat starts to feel a little hoarse, but I continue on, not wanting to let go of this experience. I'll be back to being mute again right after, anyways.

It's like I'm floating in invisible water. Maybe this is how mermaids feel. I feel my clothes swaying ever so slightly and slowly like a flag in the wind, and I spread my arms wide, in inhaling than exhaling as I do.

My eyes shoot open when I sense a presence by my door. I immediately stop singing, causing me to fall heavily onto the floor, and all those feather light sensations fade away with it. My throat starts immediately throbbing, and I wince at the pain. Have my powers gone already?

There, I see John standing there, a bewildered look on his face.
