2 Chapter 2

"What did I agree to?"

We were in a club full of people, packed to the brim with sweaty guys begging to be laid and the girls who weren't interested in laying them. Just pathetic if you ask me but hey, we are who we are.

Julie rolled her eyes, "Just have fun tonight Mel. Summer will be over and horrible school will be tomorrow."

I responded by rolling my eyes, "I can already point out one proof that love doesn't exist, on a widespread scale at least," I pointed to the sweaty guys searching for a victim of a girl on the dancefloor, "those guys only think about sex and don't care if they have no pride in going about in their activities. It's just a walk in the park for them, no strings. If the unlucky girl does get attached and expects to see him again, then she's collateral to them."

Amelia sighed, "Have fun please, you don't have to be interested in the guys here but just have fun and be nice."

I considered it for a moment. They did have to live with my ways, so I guess it's the least i could do.

I smiled, "You're right, I'll have some fun."

Julia squealed, "Omg yayyyyyyyyyy."

I giggled,"Let me just go to the bar for a while before you damage my eardrums with your squealing."

I sat at the bar after weaving through the large crowd of dancers and looked at my phone.

I heard a "hi" and looked next to me and saw a guy with sandy brown hair and tan complexion, wearing a sports jacket and jeans.

I smiled slightly and returned the greeting. "Hi there."

He turned to the bartender, "One dry Martini and a Manhattan for the lady."

I turned to him and asked, "Do you make it a habit of ordering for every random girl you meet?"

"Just the pretty ones," he winked while looking me up and down - my brunette wavy hair, hazel eyes, my tight black bodice dress and pumps.

I rolled my eyes and continued, "So out of all the girls here, you chose to sit beside me. Why?"

"Guess I was just interested," he shrugged.

I noticed the bartender brought us our drinks so i took a sip of mine. "Oh, lucky me."

He sighed and turned to me. "I'm guessing the flirty approach isn't working so I'm just going with the normal approach," he stretched out his hand with a sweet smile, "Hi, I'm Matthew."

I smiled to myself. At least this one isn't all that unbearable.

I shook his hand. "Melissa."

He took a sip of his drink and I took a quick glance at him. Yes he looked good but I'm on a "no feelings" agenda.

"So Matthew, aren't you gonna go find a girl to get laid and whatever?"

"Nope, I just came here to relax a bit," he smiled a bit and added, "no getting laid thoughts here."

Hmm, not bad.

He finished his Martini and turned his full attention to me. "So what brings you here Melissa?"

"Same reason everyone's here, to have fun," I smiled and took a glance at the crowd.

"There's something about you though, like you're different."

"Everyone's different," I replied smugly.

"You know what I mean.."

"Do I?"

Then I remembered that I can have two more drinks before I become hopelessly intoxicated.

I'm gonna need those drinks.

I looked at him and continued my answer. "I'm not your usual girl that'll take anything a guy says without question."

"Well to me that's a good thing," he put his hand on my thigh, "I like a girl that's tough and mysterious."

"Uh huh.." I turned to the bartender, "another drink please."

As I waited for him to return, I checked my phone. No texts from either Julie or Amelia which means they're having a good time probably drunk somewhere twerking on some guy.

I watched Matt look around the room awkwardly then spoke up. "So um, can I get your number?"

I looked at him with a bored look, "Yeah, sure."

We exchanged numbers and I put my phone away, looking ahead at the bar.

"Can I at least get to know a little about you?" he asked hopefully.

I shrugged, "I suppose," then smiled, deciding to play nice and at least make a friend.

He smiled, "Good. So what's your favorite colour?"

"Red, yours?"

"Blue. Favourite animal?"

"Gotta love dogs," I giggled a little.

I decided to ask him a question too. "Have you had any pets?"

He thought for a moment while looking away then replied. "Yes, actually a dog named Olive, but she died a few months ago. Loved tricks and getting treats for them. That dog sure could eat."

I smiled and put my hand on his shoulder, "Well she sounds great."

He smiled and I removed my hand. "I wish I had a pet, a dog you know. They're just so cute and fun."

He held my hand and I looked down at our hands then up at him. "Maybe one day your wish will come true Melissa."

I smiler awkwardly then pulled back my hand. "Yeah."

I finished my second drink and he asked, "Do you like dancing?"

I shook my head. "Not much of a dancer."

He nodded his head in understanding and pursed his lips. "How about we get outta here? Let's just take a walk and call it a night."

"Great. Let me just tell my friends I'm leaving."

I quickly got out my phone and texted them and returned it to my purse. "Okay, all set."

I stood up and followed him outside to the fresh air and the relief of not feeling like a sardine. I don't know how sardines do it but I wouldn't want to be stuck in a tin with some other people or in their cases....sardines.

I felt the cool summer night breeze on my face as it blew a strand of my hair. "This feels amazing," I commented as we walked down the street.

I felt like an energetic puppy at the moment so I said, "Race ya to that stop sign," pointing at the red stop sign that was about two blocks from where we were.

He grinned, "You're on."

We stopped and I started counting, "One, two-" then ran.

"Hey what happened to three?" he chased after me.

I just giggled and sped up.

One more block to go Melissa. You can do it.

I looked behind me and didn't see him so I slowed down a bit wondering where he could've disappeared to.

I stopped and squinted ahead to see if he could've somehow beaten me and out of nowhere..."Boo!"

I jumped and turned around only to see a laughing Matthew.

"Ha ha, very funny."

He continued laughing, "Man I got you good."

"You scared the crap outta me," I playfully punched his arm.

"So did you have fun?" he turned and asked.

"Well it was alright I guess."

He nodded slightly. "So how old are you?"

"Seventeen. I'm in my senior year."

"Same."

"I actually live nearby," I pointed out.

"Live alone?" he asked.

"Well yeah. My parents are away so they left me to take care of the house while they're gone."

We continued to walk in silence until we arrived at my door. "Well this is my stop," I smiled.

He smiled. "Oh ok. I had a great time Melissa and you're a beautiful individual."

I smiled. "Yeah, thanks."

He leaned in for a kiss and I turned away.

"Umm I'm gonna go inside now."

He sighed and back away a little, putting his hand in his pockets. "Uh yeah, sure. See you I guess."

"Mhm," I quickly nodded and unlocked my door. I got inside and closed it. I put my keys on the coffee table and dropped onto my couch.

"That was too close. Too close to feelings."

I got out my phone and looked at the number in my contact list.

"What am I getting myself into?"
