70 Radley's Future
"Resurrection you say? Is it a bona fide resurrection?"
"I don't think so. I mean if the head is crushed, that's it you're done."
"But if the person's head was removed you would be able to save them?"
"In theory as long as it within six minutes before true death sets in, but let me stop you right there. I ain't at your beck and call to safe people, and besides, I run the risk of death myself if I do it."
"Of course, we wouldn't dream of forcing you to do something you do not wish to do. You have to admit, your gift could be most useful."
Radley wasn't too sure about this part but he was going to lay it out in any case, "There is a catch. I can only save those who's levels are lower than mine."
"Mmm, that is indeed a catch, still a remarkable ability. Tell me, have you leveled up since the competition yet?"
"Yes, I have."
"Very good. You have real talent then."
"I am a level five now."
Adira tried to stop him but the damage was already done.
Arnold's genial smile turned upside down, "Level five you say? Is this true Adira?"
She closed her eyes and let out an exasperated breath, "Yes, it true."
"But…that breaks all the rules from what we understand of invigoration. Did he cheat during the competition?"
She shook her head, "No, I happen to verify it myself."
"But that is a bigger problem than we anticipated. The other council members aren't going to take that lying down. The leveling is just too off the scale."
Any person could see the annoyance on Adira's face, 'The protection order is already in place."
"I have no intention of hurting the boy, Adira. So curb that attitude."
Radley picked up quickly enough, "Oh, I see. So typical government bullshit. Somebody doesn't play by the government's rules and it's off with their head, accident style."
Arnold sighed, "You keep breaking the rules of convention. The rapid leveling is a real threat, not to mention, form what I heard, you have some unbelievable intuition. Capable of knowing someone's level and name by just being in the same room?"
Radley laughed it off, "I guess we are talking about a bit of hearsay?"
"Doesn't matter. You should be glad it was me who found you first. Any other member would not have taken this lightly. In my defense, I ain't either. I have a suggestion then. Why don't I become your sponsor?"
"Yeah, no. I already have someone who forced that title on me."
"Oh, and who might that be?"
"As far as I can tell he is currently…detained?"
"So it's one of the members we are currently investigating for, well, treason."
"That is unbelievable. You detained someone for protecting other people?"
"Protection? That is such an obtuse word. We call it terrorism."
"And here I thought you are a better person than the rest. Guess I have a new goal in mind now."
Radley smiled which gave off a very cold vibe.
Arnold didn't like that, "I would watch my tongue if I were you."
Radley rolled his eyes, "Please, what can you really do? Are you willing to incite international outcry?"
"Is that a threat?"
"No, but the news can easily spread what is happening here. After all, this country is one of the few in the limelight. The news of this particular incident might make it to the headlines. We don't want that do we? I already have a dead man's switch on the events that took place here."
Of course, Radley was bluffing his ass off, but he knew he needed some sort of insurance against the council. They were blatantly threatening his life.
Arnold wasn't amused. Truth is this continent can't do with sanctions, "You are playing a dangerous game boy."
"You started this, I am just finishing it. Don't threaten me. In six months or maybe a bit more I will become the most feared or revered person on this continent, and this so-called council will lose all its firepower. You threaten me, I threaten you."
In a split second, Arnold appeared in front of him staring him down. Radley didn't even flinch as he stared back.
"I wonder what would happen if I were to kill you right here, right now."
Radley brought up two fingers, "One, you will breach the protection agreement on me. Two by tomorrow the events of what happened here will be revealed to the world. It would be a pr disaster for you. Not to mention super detrimental for the continent, as you know what the other countries would do. I am not your puppet, nor will I ever be."
Radley hits Arnold where is hurt. Arnold scoffed, "You should really be careful out there. Accidents do happen."
"It will still be the same result. Council will lose its power for allowing blatant corruption taking place in the civilized areas. Heck the UN might even intercede. Fr9om what I heard the only real place one can have the power of demigods is if you remain on this continent. Out there you are nothing but a sitting duck. So take your empty bluster somewhere else."
Adira couldn't believe what she was hearing. A low-level kid had a council member by the balls. Just who was he?
Radley stood up, "Are we done here? I still have a lot to do."
"Yes, by all means, leave. Adira I need to speak with you."
Radley nodded and left.
Adira remained behind not knowing what to expect.
Arnold sat back down in his chair, "What do you make of the child?"
"Hard to say. He has an honest to god goodness where he is willing to sacrifice himself for others…He's done it to me personally. On the other side, he has a terrifying darkness for those that do wrong."
"How big of a threat will he be to the council in the future?"
"Honestly? I think their days are counted. Radley will route out any injustice with extreme prejudice."
Arnold smiled, "While I don't like his attitude, I will do my utmost to protect the child. But the secret of his leveling needs to be kept under wraps. At least against the higher authorities."
Adira nodded, she couldn't agree more. She needed to talk to him about that.
