How was Michael supposed to answer that without completely giving himself away?! He didn't want the rest of this trip to be horribly awkward and he was sure it would be if he said what he was actually thinking.

He might be able to skirt around the issue without explicitly saying he liked her. That could work…

"Because I get along with you best. You have a certain way of making everything fun and you're the easiest to talk to. Nobody at school is like you. You're different—but in a good way! Not a bad way."

Ah, he was still totally botching this. At least he hadn't been forced to admit the terrible truth she wouldn't understand. She hadn't even tried dating anyone this past semester; she told him about how she turned someone from one of her classes down during one of their daily text conversations.
