1 Chapter 1

I have always had a huge problem when it came to life. I couldn't learn anything on my own at all so at first people around me, including my own family thought that I was useless. It didn't help that I looked nothing like anyone in my family either since I had purple hair and black eyes. My name is Derek. Having colors like that in the modern age that are actually natural and not dyed is abnormal to the world. The moment my life got a slight change however was when I tried to mimic my father as he built machinery like computers by just watching him do it once. Not only was I able to mimic the process perfectly, I was also able to match my father's skill.

I did the same when my mother was playing instruments like the piano or painted art. I copied them and eventually got better at it than they did. I thought things were finally looking up for me so I went around watching many people around the city I lived in working on multiple jobs and I became proficient in everything I saw. Eventually the people around me started to resent me for a second time, saying that I was a monster, or I was too skilled for my own good. I ended up being chased down to a bridge over the ocean by multiple hired guards to chase me down and have me slave away using my ability to copy people, however I just gave up on that option and just jumped into the ocean.

When I thought I would be greeted by a ton of water pressure or immediate death on impact, instead I closed my eyes, only to reopen them at a cave entrance. In front of me was a sign that said "Say status." I ignored the bizarre fact that I wasn't dead yet and did as the sign said. Once I did, a green screen popped up in front of me.

[Name: Derek]

[Level: 1]

[Unique Skill: Watch And Learn]

[Skills: None]

[Curse; Inability To Learn]

[Watch And Learn; Skill allows the user to mimic any skill that something or someone other than the user uses and will create the first level of the skill. All copied skills can go even further than master rank as long as it is trained that far. The skills can also level by continuing to watch a skill higher than the first level and will continue to level until it reaches the same mastery.]

[Inability To Learn: This prevents the user from learning skills on their own. This does not count resistance skills or anything similar in nature.]

Is this some sort of game? I remember playing video games after copying some friends playing mmos and getting better at it than them. However it would probably be a better idea to not associate myself with people unless I know for a fact that they won't betray me. First of all let's check my current situation. I'm wearing my black jacket and pants that I had on before. There is a bag in front of me below the sign, I guess this is some sort of beginners thing?

I opened the bag and pulled out an entire short sword that was bigger than the bag. I guess this is one of those bags of holding? Or space storage bags? I tried to think of looking at the whole contents of the bag and a screen popped up showing me four canteens of water, some jerky, and dried bread. It also looks like there are some casual clothes from this world as well. It might be a good idea to switch them out, so I did so.

Now that I situated myself, I strapped the bag to my side and walked out of the small cave onto a short road. There looks to be a small town just ahead so maybe that place will have something like an adventurers guild I can register at like in those fantasy games and novels. By the time I got near the front gate of the town, there were a large number of people wearing similar clothing to mine, I guess this is something like a starting town for people. Once I got to the gate, the guard just yawned and pointed me to the adventurers guild without paying me much mind or talking much to me for that matter. I guess people like me are common. I just walked to the adventurers guild to sign up. After speaking with the receptionist, they told me that, if you don't want to go to the adventurers training camp which all starting adventurers go to, you have to be tested by an examiner. A lot of people who came before me opted for this option so there is a long line for it but I still signed up for it regardless.

The receptionist lady said that I could wait in the lobby but she had a look of bewilderment when I asked her if I could watch the test, but nonetheless she still agreed to it since she saw no harm in it. That alone was her biggest mistake, since I plan to fully utilize my unique skill! There were 20 tests before mine but since most of the starting adventurers taking this test had either swords or daggers for weapons, their examiners used the same weapons. Sadly this means I could probably only learn a few skills, but it was better than nothing. For the first test there was a young boy, probably only 14 or 15 years old with black hair taking the test. His examiner was an older man looking to be in his late 20s with red hair and blue eyes, wearing leather armor, and wielding a short sword. Once the test began, my skill automatically activated.

[Watch And Learn being used: Time required to gain ???? Swordsmanship Lv1 is two minutes.]
