The old man could not react in time to Duan Ling Tian's sudden attack. He had assumed he could strike preemptively and gain the upper hand, easily killing Duan Ling Tian. He did not expect the void would twist and ripple, devouring his attacks. It was as though Duan Ling Tian had full control over the space around them. It took him a while to discover he had indeed entered the range of the space Duan Ling Tian controlled. He found that his body was no longer under his control. He could only watch with a shred of his Divine Consciousness as his physical body was destroyed. Before he could even figure out what was happening, he had died.
