1 The Gift

My name is Oliver Lancaster.

I'm 17 years old and for the most part my whole life has been a mess.

My parents left me at the age of 5 because of divorce and apparently neither one of them wanted me so I was raised in most part by my grandma. We didn't have that much money so while other kids would be skiing in the alps or relaxing in Hawaii for summer, I would have to work part time jobs at fast food joints.

I could go on and on but that's not what this is about.

This is about the online VRMMORPG "NETCORE" and how I became its hero.

IIt all started when a notification appeared in my status bar.

Class assigned:HERO

"That's pretty weird", I thought. It was a well known fact among the gaming community that you had to take a tier test to get a class assigned to you.

So why was I just assigned a class out of nowhere?

I had only been playing this game for about a week or so because my friend Max had forced me. Max was a good guy but a bit too good. His family was rich but that didn't make him spoiled like most other rich kids. He and I close and when he bought me the headset(which was pretty expensive) I couldn't refuse. The weird thing was I was just level 12. You had to be a minimum of level thirty to even qualify for the tier test to get a class.

"Max, it says I've been assigned a class", I told him.

"What is it?", he asked.

"Hero class apparently. You ever heard of that?", I asked him. He had been playing the game for just two months but still knew all the ins and outs of it so I considered him a reliable source.

"You shouldn't even have a class, but to answer your question, I'm pretty sure there's no class called hero in the game", he responded.

That got me thinking, but Max saw my serious expression.

"It's probably just a bug" he said.

I logged out of the game doubtfully but still decided to do some searching on the internet.

Afterwards, after scouring the internet for what seemed to be my newly assigned class, I realised that there was absolutely zero information on the mysterious "HERO" class. Deciding it was a bug like Max said I went to sleep thinking that it would be resolved soon and that there would be no more problems.

I was very wrong.
