12 Novice Forging

After a formal welcome to the forge, Rowan continued practicing his smithing technique, as well as trying to build up his strength in order to move all the heavy objects around.

Despite him wanting to grind the production of ingots to mass harvest forging experience, Jarid eventually stopped him after he produced several more batches of ingots, saying how making too much would be "quite the waste."

Seeing how Eidiri had improved in terms of ingot production, Jarid decided to show him how to craft basic tools, stuff like axes, picks, swords, etc. Nothing so complicated as armor though.

Of course, the goods produced would be that of the lowest standard, anything higher and it would be stupid to give them to a novice.

As such, he left a basic manual detailing how to smith these tools in the first place, opting to let Eidiri explore a bit of forging on his own.

After being left on his own, Eidiri decided to carefully read the blueprint, of course though, it just had to be incredibly vague, only providing the barest of instructions.

Following the instructions, he took the ingots and prepared to melt them down once again, sliding them into the feeding tray.

From then on as they melted within the furnace, and while they melted, Eidiri decided to make use of a smelting technique from reality, folding the metal over as it melted to provide a stronger structure.

After that, he poured the metal into a standard knife cast they had lying around the shop.

A couple of hammer strikes, and then he quenched the blade in the cool water. He repeated this process several times over, eventually shaping the metal into something resembling a blade.

Following that, he moved to the grindstone next to the anvil, slowly sharpening the edges, enough so that the blade would be able to cut through armor.

However, something terrible occurred while grinding out the edges, see the thing is, Eidiri was still a complete novice to forging and has very little experience with the subject matter.

And despite him making an application of advanced Earth forging techniques, in the end, the metal still came out brittle, snapping under the pressure when grinding.

A failure, not unexpected, however. As such, Eidiri could only pick up the pieces and try again, this time making a reduction in the number of times in which he folded the metal.

Essentially, due to him not possessing the necessary forging theory, he was pretty much screwing around and experimenting, trying to figure what worked and what didn't.

This reduction in the number of times in which he folded the metal resulted in failure as well, the metal this time snapping under the weight of his hammer before it even got to the grinding process.

However, he realized that this could've been due to him not regulating the strength of his hammer strikes and as such attempted this reduction in folding once again.

This time he ensured steady hammering, and once again, the metal unsurprisingly snapped.

Now he was sure that the issue had to be that he didn't fold the metal enough times after all that experimentation, and when he added 3 more layers of folding, while the end product came out a bit leaning towards the heavy end, it would be usable, and more importantly, it would cut.

"You have created a Sub-Par Plain Steel Knife! Awarded 1 forging Exp. 11/20"

Eidiri sighed out in relief at seeing that prompt, that message appearing meant that the thing he had created would at least be useable. Of course, it could be better, but that was a matter of time and him improving his forging skill.

After that message, he decided to check out the stats of the knife.

"Sub-Par Plain Steel Knife - Created at the hands of one of the most novice of forgers, there really isn't anything extraordinary in regards to this blade. Due to some errors in the forging process, it has lost part of its potential and as a result, came out as a lesser product.

+2 ATK

Blade Passive -

Grants a 1.2 percent armor reduction to enemies slashed by the blade. In addition to this, like all blades, it is prone to causing bleeding to those slashed by the blade.

This would do, for now, hopefully, Jarid would let him keep some of the things he made in the shop, if he didn't get his permission then well, he wasn't willing to offend his boss over a sub-par weapon.

This line of thought in mind, Eidiri decided to display his work to Jarid, knocking at his master's door, Eidiri softly said, "Excuse me master, but I've succeeded in crafting my first blade, and while my work is inferior I hope that you'll be able to tell me where I've gone wrong."

Hearing this, Jarid excitedly opened the door, "You've already created a blade!" he exclaimed in astonishment, "You were working on ingots yesterday lad!"

In response to this, Eidiri humbly said, "While it is true that I have crafted a blade, the result is indeed sub-par to what it could've been."

After calming down a bit, after that shocker of a statement, Jarid carefully analyzed his apprentice's work, "While this is indeed a good attempt that should be out of your capabilities, it appears I've misjudged you. It's a great effort for someone so new to this."

"Here's where you went wrong. You most likely didn't hammer it out evenly, see those lumps here and here," Jarid runs his finger on the blade, pointing at malformities, "if you hammered it evenly, those wouldn't be there. Let me teach you how to properly hammer this stuff."

"Now this is the technique of our forge here okay? Don't just go sharing it around. If you show more potential, I'll teach you even better stuff okay?"

Hearing this, Eidiri dumbly nodded, not anticipating this turn of events.

"Now this technique, while basic, is incredibly useful, it'll hammer pretty much anything nicely. It's called the Dwarven Son technique, it's pretty straightforward, you just gotta let metal rest right there, and then swing the hammer fiercely, but control it. Don't let the swings go wild, but let them have enough force that it'll shape the metal."

"While doing this, it's helpful to keep in mind the end product, it helps us visualize and guide us through our work."

Eidiri listened attentively, absorbing his master's teachings and accepting his guidance.

"You have received 3 Exp for receiving the knowledge of those much better versed than you. 14/20"

"You have received the Dwarven Son forging technique!

Dwarven Son - A skill that exemplifies exactly what it's called. A technique taught to the Dwarven sons and young ages, it is among the most rudimentary of dwarven forging knowledge.
