31 Mundane life

BADUM—!

BADUM—!

Li Chen gulped. His heart suddenly felt heavy and his breathing was haggard.

Quickly reaching for his nose, he expected blood but nothing happened. Even after a minute, nothing happened.

"Was that a prank?!"

{No. Do know that your ability to imprint your will into that dimension, thereby making it your reality, will be continually evaluated.}

"You don't seem satisfied with what I've done?"

{Perhaps.}

"Then what do you expect me to do?" Li Chen waited for a minute and knew that there would be no response.

"So I'm supposed to figure out everything on my own then. Why did you choose me? Am I in some way special?"

Li Chen's smug smile vanished when the white words appeared mid-air.

{This isn't a gift. Li Chen, it's a test. You were given a godlike ability. It's no longer a question of gaining power but how do you use it? So far, your choices have done more harm than good.}

Up went Li Chen's brows. The corners of his lips twitched. His eyes revealed his conflicting thoughts and he was about to speak when he recalled Xiu Ying's Hanfu belt's mysterious loosening.

"Well, apart from that, I don't see what I did wrong. I saved that village. Didn't you see that? Besides, apart from Xiu Ying, none of them are important to the plot."

Seeing that he wouldn't receive a response once again, Li Chen puffed out, turned, and was about to walk away.

But he paused.

"Why did you make me a slave? And can you appear in other places except my kitchen?"

{You are already a slave to alcohol and life itself. Adding one more didn't seem like much.}

What sort of reason was that?!

Li Chen held his waist and looked down. Puffing out to expel his rumbling emotions, he lifted his head. "You didn't answer why you always appear in my kitchen."

{Because it's the least place you visit.}

Li Chen thought of something deeper as the response, but he swallowed his words, turned, and paused again.

"Can I give you a name? Being nameless doesn't help a conversation."

Silence reigned.

"I thought you wouldn't accept. Now, what should I name you?" As he placed his finger on his chin, pondering. Suddenly, a deep, sonorous voice boomed from every corner of the room.

{Name me and you die!}

BAM—!

Without wasting a second, Li Chen left the room and slammed the door. 'That's it. My kitchen belongs to someone else now. I might have to build an external one.'

He walked into his large, well-furnished sitting room and switched on the TV. His brows rose when he saw the university belle once again being praised for the lead character role she played in a new movie.

Li Chen knew he would have acted weirdly seeing her basking in the glory of thousands if he hadn't been transported into his comic and seen higher ranked beauties.

The anchorman talked about her ongoing birthday party and videos of the grand venue appeared on screen.

"It's her birthday!" Li Chen exclaimed. His shock was because his age and birthday were the same as hers.

Switching off the TV, he ordered a sumptuous dinner from a different store to celebrate and left the sitting room.

Li Chen walked into his drawing room, switched on his monitor, grabbed a notebook, and placed his fingers on the keyboard.

With a determined expression, he kept jotting down information about his dual element while also researching possible techniques.

While he studied, the doorbell rang. 'Finally!'

He reached the door, took his packaged meal and dropped it on the dining table. After he thoroughly checked to make sure there weren't any death threats, he sat down.

At that moment, the phone rang. Li Chen brought it out of his pocket and saw the caller's ID. It was Xiao Xun, the doctor, who took care of his grandma.

"Xun-er, is she okay?"

"Why shouldn't she be? She wants to meet you; that's why I called." Xiao Xun's pleasant voice slithered into his ears.

"Oh, she's okay. That's good."

"Chen-er, stop being a worrywart. Your grandma is fine. See you soon~" She said, excitement lurking within her voice.

Without eating, Li Chen grabbed a hoodie jacket from his wardrobe, wore a pair of white sneakers and left his house.

The hospital wasn't far from his house so he strolled there. While walking, his gaze lingered on the cars moving to and fro.

'Old Li could move faster than the fastest sports car.' he snickered inwardly, imagining the chaos an immortal Daoist-level cultivator would bring to this world.

He arrived at the towering hospital a few minutes later. It was a six-story building built with exquisite taste. About seven cars were packed on the left side and a good number of individuals went in while some left.

Right outside the glass door stood a fairly tall, raven-haired woman garbed in a white coat.

"Li Chen!" She yelled, waving at him.

The people around them looked at Li Chen, who puffed out and slid his hands into his pockets so she wouldn't see them.

They had grown closer because of his grandma. Xiao Xun was in charge of his grandma so they met a lot.

Somehow, he also ended up being her patient after she discovered that he was admitted to this same hospital a month ago.

It was the stress that made his grandma fall sick.

All his efforts to make his presence minimal came crumbling down as Xiao Xun pulled down his hood.

"Hiss!" She gasped at his skinny face. "Haven't you been eating?!"

"I have." He replied, dragging his eyes from her well-carved face to the building. "Is she awake?"

"She is."

Xiao Xun led him to his grandma's room and left. The spacious room had a bed dominating the center and a TV opposite the bed.

There was a fairly large window opposite the door, which gave the patient access to a nice outside view. A 64-year-old woman laid on the bed, watching the 32-inch screen.

She turned her head toward him, displaying a gentle smile that multiplied her wrinkles. "I thought you wouldn't come."

"Why?"

"Because you're a cry baby. Last time Xiao Xun told you of the test results, you cried all night. A man was crying like a baby before Xun-er. I'm ashamed of you. Humph!"

The corners of his lips twitched. "The result stated you had stage IV c..." Li Chen held his tongue and changed his response.

"That was before. And Miss Xiao is two years older than me."
