There could only be 1,000 inner disciples in the entire sect, and everyone was ranked by their seats. To gain a better ranking, inner disciples had to challenge the others in a duel to claim their seat ranking. However, by challenging someone, one had to put a wager as a fee while the challenged didn't need to put anything on the line other than their rank.
