There was a time…

Nathaniel took a deep breath, "There was a time when I used to prefer hiding in the shadows. A time when myths were at its peak threatening to expose our existence. The witches and warlocks had gained an upper hand, trained the common mortals in the ways to hunt us, thus originating a new breed of hunters."

"Aren't they just regular humans learning to kill other beings?" Connor asked.

"Nowadays yes," Nathaniel nodded. "But there are some of the original hunters left".

"Original hunters?" Connor frowned.

"Oh boy, you know so little about the outside world." In a condescending manner, Nathaniel mumbled. Connor bit his inner lip, suppressing his urge to roll his eyes as he still needed to hear the rest of the story.

"The original hunters were the disciples of the largest witch coven, The Anaguars. From harvesting one of the strongest magic a few of them were blessed with powers that would allow them to fight supernatural beings with extended durability and agility along with some extra powers. In fact, it gave them a better chance at winning against the supernaturals than regular humans"

"And these followers, were they random?" Connor asked.

"They were an experiment. Out of hundreds only few survived, whose descendants still continue to possess these powers. Descendant is thus another word that is used for the original hunters of this era." Nathaniel sighed.

"Anyways, I am deviating from the main story." Nathaniel sighed. "Back then, I knew about warlocks that had sources and reaches that threatened to eradicate our kind. Our… King that I spoke of made a deal following a gruesome war that the firstborn of the generation had to follow".

"And if they didn't?" Connor whispered.

"The war will ensue again". Nathaniel whispered.

"What was the deal?" Connor asked.

"Do not bother them, and they won't bother us. They'll keep their kind, including the original hunters at bay, and we would steer clear of them and people they might be related to. For at least a century our kind depended on the blood of the animals." Nathaniel sighed, "but, it wasn't meant to be". He sighed. "We grew weaker to the point we failed to procreate further,"

"So one of the Vampires broke the treaty?" Connor declared with dread.

"Yes," Nathaniel sighed. "Guess on whom"?

Connor frowned. How the hell would he know, it wasn't like he knew ancient witches…unless, "Conrad?"

Nathaniel smirked. "Luckily it wasn't too late. So I killed the vampire who broke the law before the word got out".

"Did you really need to save him?" Asked Connor. "I mean, I saw him and he is pretty dangerous."

"He is now," Nathaniel let out a smile, "but there are reasons he wasn't back then. One of them was because he was a little boy" he scoffed.

"Huh?" Connor was confused.

"No vampire would be idiotic enough to attack a full fledged witch or warlock". Scoffed Nathaniel.

"I see…." Connor mumbled. "Why did he say you were failing at conversation?" Asked Connor.

"He doesn't remember meeting me back then I suppose. He was too young to have awakened his Latent warlock abilities, so using my power of persuasion I made him forget that interaction." Nathaniel sighed. Lucky, right?

As he grew up, I met him again on his way to raid a Vampire Coven. One I was visiting because of a certain celebration. I think it was a celebration of the century of life as a vampire." Nathaniel thought. "I tried to stop him of course, we had a civilized conversation."

"Did you succeed?" Connor asked apprehensively.

"Oh yes. I managed to persuade him." Nathaniel nodded.

"And then…?" Connor asked.

"We had another meeting following which we were both handed the responsibility of maintaining peace on both sides. So…we got along and realised how similar we were." Nathaniel nodded. "Or so I thought".

"He used you?" Connor asked.

"Yes, he did". Nathaniel shrugged. "He managed to convince me why his horrible ideas were righteous, and I must have been blinded by my feelings because of how long it took me to see things the right way". Nathaniel sighed.

"And you killed him". Connor continued.

"I killed him… but I did more than that." Nathaniel sighed. "I made sure I killed his disciples as well, so that Conrad's vendetta would be gone for good. But… I must have missed someone and now he is back himself." With anger he thrusted his hand on the table startling a few people along the other tables.

Connor blinked at that outburst and wondered, "Horrible ideas like?"

"Like destroying a whole town in order to reshape it into a 'peaceful' place to live for both Vampires and Humans." Nathaniel shrugged, kissing Connor a little wide eyed. "This place originally used to be his, God knows what havoc he'll wreck when he is done preparing for it." That widened Connor's eyes further. To cap it off, Nathaniel asked, "So, does that answer your query? Or are there still some questions you'd like me to answer?
