11 Brianna

Preoccupied, the girl danced and hummed to the famous tune of 'You're The One' by Rihanna. Streaks of sun rays illuminated her like an angel descending the heavens. Her golden blonde hair dazzled as it swayed along with the slight wind. Her petite frame clothed in a simple black nickers, and a greenish blouse; the color complimented her hair. Black ballet shoes covered her small feet. And, a black pouch was secured around her waist. The bottom half of her face was covered with a nebulizer. From it, a string ran into the pouch.

Without having to get closer, I knew she was human. Her faint scent combined itself with the wind. For some reason, she had a medical odor. A smell Brian used to have. The days when a hospital was more of his home than his house.

The last verse of the song was hummed while she fixed her already neat outfit. She checked her silver wristwatch for the fifth time since I had seen her. It seemed the time she had been waiting for came. Her pulse sped up as she snatched the nebulizer from her face, and stashed it in her pouch before she checked herself. Again.

As soon as she did this a large wolf strode out in the open. Upon seeing the beast she did the opposite of what a normal child would. Instead of running from the creature, she ran towards it. Hands opened, heart-thumping, happiness oozed from her scream.

The beast welcomed the tight hug she bestowed unto it. The animal sniffed her when she released it with a scratch behind its ear.

Not even a minute later, words poured out her mouth. On and on she went, laughing ever so often at her jokes. The creature never once showed hostility. It listened to her constant rambling, rubbing its huge head against her every time she stopped to pull in a struggling breath.

A few talks later, he nudged her with his head to a large tree trunk laid on the ground. Following the creature's unspoken command, she sat on the tree trunk while he laid at her feet. They stayed quiet for a few more minutes while the little girl caught her breath. When her breathing returned to normal, she went back to her storytelling.

However, as time went by, her coughing got more disturbing to the ears. Her wheezing became uncontrollable. The large animal whined and nudged her pouch with its nose. Again she obeyed it, and freed her nebulizer from her pouch, and nestled it over the bottom half of her face.

A pat was given to the creature when her breathing steadied. In the same breath, he rose on all fours, towering over the small child. She did not appear to mind his disadvantage in height as they continued their wordless conversation.

At the end of their conversation, she stood alongside him. He then aided her in climbing on his back. When there she leaned forward, and caressed his sides, or at least where her short hands caught. Her tiny fingers were lost in its platinum white fur. Though the white looked more like snowflakes.  I bet it was just as soft.

Both their eyes drifted close as she pampered the beast. It never took long for the hormonal desire to end as the creature took off sauntering. There were moments where it stopped as if checking if the girl was okay before it took off sprinting. The child squealed with excitement when he did this. Her squeals blossomed into laughter as she rode her companion.

Obsessed with their happiness, I trailed after them at a small distance. Bushes and trees were my refuge. Along the way, it was hard not to notice other animals seemed to disappear or went into hiding until the duo passed. The act provoked my thoughts with a huge question mark.

Nonetheless, our little adventure was short-lived, and they returned to the spot they met. Nebulizer off, the girl planted kisses along the face of her companion before she turned and ran away.

The animal and I both watched and listened after her trial. Her steps got lighter and lighter until they were petered out. My attention returned to the beast and met a pair of grey eyes.

My stomach dropped. My heart froze.

Darn.

I staggered backward while my eyes stayed glued to the animal. Once a branch blocked the connection, I scampered off. I never stopped until I was in the safety of my bedroom with the door closed behind me.

Later in the night, when my brain chose to analyze what happened during the day, the beauty, and her beast came back to mind. How happy she was when they were together. How calm and patient he was with her. Their affection and comfort were admirable. Both the child and the animal were happy with each other despite their flaws.

That was what I wanted. If only my parents had the slightest idea of this.

A sigh left my lips.

I knew my parents would never trust me because of the mistakes I made in the past, but I had a chance to show them I could be good. I could be who I was without causing harm. I could make a difference.

I stared at the ceiling.

This was it. I was going to join that darn Young Council, and rock the hell out of it. Once I became a member of the High Council I would be a hell of a leader. They would have to accept me for who I was no matter what.

To hell with Kyle. I was going to utilize a barrier spell to keep him away, and it was going to work. I won't allow him or anything else to hinder me from getting my chance at redemption.

I was going to show them all I could be the best SVH this town had ever seen.
