4 Wand pt.3

"Not this one." "Not that one."

One by one, John started throwing his huge collection of wand around. Unlike the shop, his basement was filled with wands just not so neatly organized.

"Found it," John mumbled again keeping the box containing the wand at a separate place alongside the other 10 he had already picked before. "Seems like that's the last of it."

John stood up as he picked up the wands bringing it near Miles. "Your fateful wand is among them, if not I will have to create another one."

"And how long will that take?"

"A month." John said, "A customized wand is much more difficult than creating a normal one."

"Then I hope one of them works."

"That's what I'm hoping for as well." John said handing a wand to Miles, " Try this, Ebony and unicorn hair. Twelve inches."

Miles took the wand and gave it a shake but it just went chaotic, flicking away from his hand.

"Next one, Wampus cat hair, and Aspen. Seven inches."

Miles had barely raised his hand when John snatched it away, "Next one,..."

One by one, Miles tried the wands but none of them fit in too well.

"This is the final one." John said handing out another wand, "Maple and Thunderbird tail feather. Eleven inches."

Praying that this works, Miles grabbed the wand when suddenly the wand started emitting bright light as the wind around the room started circulating around him. The effect lasted for a while but it was enough to know that this wand was the one that fit him thoroughly.

"A perfect match." John said with excitement clearly written all over his face, "I have never seen a Wolfe's wand mastered so easily before. It seems like you were made for the wand."

"You mean the wand was made for me?"

"This wand was made by my great grandfather, decades before you were born." John said talking offense to what Miles had just said, "So you were the one made for the wand."

Miles wanted to say something but seeing the mad man like behavior he was showing, he decided against it as he looked at the delicately carved wand in his hand. He had seen many wands before but this was his first time seeing a wand detailed with such precision.

"This wand truly does seem to fit you," John said calming down from his excitement before, "The maple wood represents someone with an adventurous heart, while the Thunderbird tail feather represents strength and it has a magical property of its own."

"What is it?"

"Like the birds, the feathers are taken from, they are able to sense danger and can cast curses on their own." John said, "That's what makes them unique. Wands with Thunderbird tail feather cores have been known to fire curses pre-emptively when supernatural dangers are present. So if you don't control your fear you will probably curse someone just out of plain fear even if you don't want to hurt them."

Miles shook the wand around finding a comfortable position, "It's not traced right?"

"What is your and your mother's obsession with having non-traceable wands?" John complained.

"Why wouldn't I?" Miles said, "I mean, what's the point in even being a wizard if I can't use my wand the way I like it? And with my mom's work, a lot of people aren't really a fan of ours."

"True, your mother isn't really one of the friendliest ones." John said as he coughed looking at Miles's face "But I'll be really careful carrying the wand around, you don't want to be caught by an Auror having an untraceable wand."

"I will be."

"Alas, it's quite a pity that the wand that suits you isn't really the one I created." John said, "I guess I will never be able to repay your mother.

As Miles was about to ask why the guy was so obsessed about paying back, he heard someone speak, "Why are you being so loud today?"

"Honey, you should come and see for yourself." John replied back to the voice, "I am sure you will be surprised."

"Who is it?" The voice said in a grumbly tone as they came towards them.

Unlike how the voice sounded, the person turned out to be a little girl that was around the same as Miles. The girl had messy long dark hair and was in her pajamas. Both she and Miles made eye contact for a while, only for the other person to turn red and suddenly escape.

'What was that?' Miles questioned himself.

"Ah! Children do grow up quick." John said with a sigh, "She's my daughter Selena, she'll be attending Illvemorny this year."

Miles nodded dumbly but soon the girl came back, this time her hair properly combed and in a beautiful floral dress at that.

"Hello, Mr. Rakepick, I am a huge fan." The girl said extending her hands towards him, still quite shy about it.

"Nice to meet you, Ms. Wolfe." Miles addressed shaking her hand.

"Please just call me Selena." Selena said, "I never expected to see you here today."

"Call me Miles as well." Miles said with a gentlemanly smile, "I too didn't expect to meet a beautiful lady today especially not with him around."

John's lips twitched for a while as he waited for his daughter to defend him but the girl just blushed and didn't say much.

"You two can go back up and have your chat there." John said bitterly, "I have to clean this mess."

"It wasn't really that clean before, to begin with," Miles said, "So what about the price of the wand?"

"The combination of Thunderbird tail feather and Maple do make one of the most expensive wands around but you don't really have to pay for it." John said, "And it's not like you have any galleon on you."

"I don't." Miles said honestly, "I was just being polite."

"Mr... I mean Miles, let's go upstairs and not bother dad here." Selena said pulling on his sleeve, "He gets unusually grumpy in the morning."

Nodding both of them left leaving John alone who just stood there mumbling some words.

"It's kind of surprising to see you come here to buy your wand." Selena said, "Dad usually doesn't really make them like he used to before."

After a simple chat, both of them got comfortable with each other and started chatting like old friends.

"Well, my mom bought me to him." Miles said, "He must be pretty good for mom to have so much faith in him."

"He is." She replied happily but she quickly turned sad as she continued, "I do hope we get to open a shop properly again."

"So you're going in Ilvemorny, huh?" Miles changed the topic seeing her getting sad, "I wonder how that would be like?"

"Not much fun, I would say." Selena said, "Things are so restricting here that they take the fun out of everything even school. It feels as if the MACUSA cares more about restricting wizard kind than protecting them. And besides, aren't you going there as well?"

"I am going to Hogwarts, actually," Miles said as he missed a bit of disappointment in Selena's eyes, "But is it really that bad here?"

"Yes." Selena nodded, "That's why I admire you the most, being the young curse-breaker you get to travel around a lot. Away from everything, just basking in freedom."

"I am not really a curse-breaker." Miles said scratching his head, "I just tag along with my mother on her journies, that's all but it is indeed liberating to not bother with anything in the world. The only thing standing between you and adventure is bad hotel rooms."

"Sounds exciting!" Selena said as her eyes shined with admiration.

"It is." Miles said his honest thought sitting next to someone younger was quite comforting for a change, "But I am kinda worried because of it. All this time I have gotten so used to living this life of treasure hunting and traveling that I am kinda scared whether I will be able to fit in the school or not."

"I don't think you'll have any problem." Selena said with certainty in her voice, "You just have to believe in yourself."

Miles smiled a little thinking about how he was getting motivated by a young girl.

"Take this," Selena said handing a chocolate frog to Miles from her pocket, "Dad always says that sweets will cheer one up no matter the problem."

"You can buy this here?" Miles said taking the offer, "It has been ages since I last tried one."

"My aunt actually works in London so every time she has a chance she will send me one of the unique candies around." Selena said getting glad that Miles liked it, "Unfortunately you can't buy anything close to that here. But the no-maj brands are that bad as well."
