5 They Can Try

It was 8pm when her brief session with Dr. Moore finished but Jane felt so tired and decided to retire early in her bedroom. She had just finished drying her hair and was picking her nightclothes when she heard three knocks on her door before Mia asked to be let in.

After getting an okay, Mia entered the room with warm milk on hand. She then handed the drink to her.

"To what do I owe the pleasure?" Jane said as she smiled brightly at her after drinking the milk in one gulp and passing the glass back to her.

She chose to wear a see through red nightie with the fabric stopping mid-thigh, highlighting all her curves, long legs making her look like a succubus in the night.

Mia answered her "Just checking up on how you're doing, boss."

Her eyebrows immediately raised as Jane continued dressing right in front of her and couldn't help but comment, "If I were a man or were one of your suitors, I'd probably lose my mind right now."

Jane twisted her body facing her direction and slightly tilted her head as she gave a playful smirk and flicked her hair and played with it with her fingers. "You know, you need not be a man nor do you have to be my suitor to lose said mind. Don't worry, I don't discriminate."

Mia chuckled. "No worries President, no matter how much you try my reproductive organ won't ever react because of you, so you're safe with me."

Jane winked at her. "Whatever helps you sleep at night babe."

"..."

Jane giggled as she walked in front of her mirror and took a quick appraisal of herself. Her supple skin looked fantastic against the red fabric, the cleavage that was exposed were particularly enticing, her chest was just the right size, her slim waist looked like it would fit perfectly when you put your hands around it and her long slender legs that was on display also looked great making her think that all the leg day workout she did whenever she ever had the time was worth it. Her body wasn't voluptuous but it had what it needed to have in all the right places which made her nod in satisfaction. As expected, her body is satisfactory.

She laid on top her bed as she supported her haid with her hand as she looked at Mia, who was standing in front of her, waiting for her to talk.

Mia pulled on a stool. "Did you visit her resting place today?"

"Hmm.. before I worked out. But Candice sorted me out already so calm down."

"Sooo... are you really feeling okay now?" Mia asked suspiciously.

"En. All fine and dandy." Jane replied as she yawned, clearly getting sleepy.

"Then why wear red?"

Jane stiffened a bit then laughed. "Nothing can really escape you, huh." As expected, her secretary is still the most competent unlike that quack psychiatrist who acts like she knows and understands her when she clearly doesn't. Not like she tells her any of these important stuff anyways.

Mia pulled at the blanket and tucked her in as she looked at her again and couldn't help but worry.

The President really isn't fond of the color. In fact, she actually hates it but then started buying a bunch of red outfits two years ago because she oddly feels safe and at ease when she wears anything red. She would only voluntarily pick them under certain circumstances; when she's at her lowest, when there's something she can't handle or when she has something she fears. Mia didn't know which one she's feeling right now.

Jane knew that her loyal secretary was feeling uneasy because of this and felt especially warm and thought that at least there was someone she needn't be wary of. Someone who actually treats her like a precious family member.

"Don't worry. What happened earlier won't happen again, I promise." she reassured her. "I was really only feeling a bit emotional when I realized mom really isn't around and I-I don't know it kind of overwhelmed me. You were really a great help though, truly worthy of being the only person I acknowledge as my most trusted friend."

Mia stared at her with a solemn look on her face as if she was deciding on something. She was scared of what happened earlier but what gave her a sense of relief was that she wasn't as destructive as she was two years ago to the point that Jane herself was willing to get psychiatrist or any specialist because she knew she wouldn't get any better without help and she wasn't willing to give up on her mom and her ambition.

What she told Dr. Moore earlier technically wasn't a lie but it wasn't the truth either. She really hasn't seen her trembling the way she did earlier because she saw something worse than that.

In this regard, she was thinking the proposal Dr. Moore gave her would be the best for Jane or else there's no saving her boss from falling further and she couldn't allow that.

Feeling some sort of resolve welling up inside her, she tried to feel out her ticking time bomb of a boss. Mia started. "If you don't mind me asking, have you never really considered of seriously opening up and sharing things to Dr. Moore? I feel like we've been going in circles for years and I'm not really helping you to be honest plus she's the expert and she seems to be truly concerned..."

Jane stared at the ceiling and her eyes looked dark. "I get the concern but my gut tells me she's up to no good. All her records are clean and she seems to be trustworthy but I can't get myself to fully trust her or anyone apart from my mom and you anyways. She always tells me to stop competing for a while and focus on getting treated first like she really thinks those old undying shareholders would be magnanimous enough to wait on me."

All they want are results, results and results. No amount of genius could back you up if you couldn't deliver what they want. All those years of effort currying favor to everyone would be crushed to bits if she ever thought of taking a break. She wasn't as privileged as her half siblings who had a wealthy socialite for a mother. Her father is unreliable, the Smiths only wanted to use her and the people she got on her side would very easily turn on her so she couldn't do afford to relax. Just the fact that she's been medication for her mental health was enough to throw them off for a while when it was leaked before. If it really wasn't for her being smart, resourceful and experienced, she probably would've been swallowed up a long time ago and she couldn't allow that just yet.

Mia contemplated and bit her lower lip before asking: "This past year have you never considered that though? I get that you couldn't possibly stop because of Gemma's case and your ambition but right now there's nothing big holding you back from getting out plus James and Julia is coming back.."

Jane's eyes raised a brow in surprise. Her every being was jolted awake, almost immediately she felt she wasn't tired anymore. "Are they coming to that party I arranged for father's return? Is it confirmed?"

"En."

Jane laughed hysterically. Those two, they were the true competition. Judy was a simple prideful person and was the type to tell you all her plans once you taunt her a bit. Jimmy and Jessica were the neutral types. As long she wasn't the one inheriting everything, they wouldn't care.

James and Julia were the sly, ruthless ones. Every bad thing that happened to her through the years were always related to either one of them. For both of them to dare to show up this time, did they get enough support?

"Does the old man know?"

Mia shook her head. "They're planning to keep it a secret. I just got this news today but I heard it's been in planned since 4 months ago which is why I came here today but then the thing happened so I forgot to tell you.. Are you really going to be okay?"

Jane laughed again. "Oh dear Mia, father definitely knows this already. Nothing can be hidden that long from that guy. Even I wasn't an exception. Since they dared to come out now, they're probably too anxious to get me out."

It seems they are well prepared this time but it didn't matter. 4 months? She's been in the game since she was in her teens. Want to kick her out? They can try. She wasn't afraid.

She hurriedly told Mia to get out as she carefully thought of the things she needed to do.

While Jane was planning inside her room, Mia had a grim look on her face when she got out. She really was the one that was wrong. It seems Dr. Moore was right. She needed to decide and she needed to do it sooner.
