8) Divorce Papers...

POV: David

As I finished getting dressed, and out the door to my attorney's office. I remembered Gina's face when she had returned from Florida. She had been gone, screwing everything that walked, for a little over 4 weeks before the money she had ran out. When she wanted me to give her access to the money I had moved, and I refused, she came rushing home to demand her way. Instead, she walked into the young man that my attorney had hired to serve her with divorce papers and was completely shocked. Gina then had spent the first couple months trying to change my mind, followed by the last couple months trying to convince me to give her everything that we had ever owned. Honestly, I hadn't put up much fight. I was just ready to be done with the 'witch', no matter what it cost. I came out of my room in time to see my daughter grab her book bag and rush out the door to the bus. I smiled, some things never change... like her always running just a tad behind to reach that bus stop on time.

Before I could even get out the door, the phone rang with the caller ID signaling that it was the attorney's office. Grabbing my keys, I answered the phone, "Hello Hank, I'm on my way to your office now. Can this wait?" Heading out the door, I hear him reply, "Hello, Mr. Richardson, no it can't. Your wife just called and said you had agreed to her adjustments of the divorce settlement. Is this true?" The lawyer sounded exasperated and I just knew in the pit of my stomach that I should have listened better earlier. "I said for her to write it up and send it over to you. I never really said one way or the other. Why?" I waited for the lawyer to respond, knowing it was bad if he was calling, especially with us meeting in less than an hour. In a sickly patient voice, he proceeded to tell me, "She wants the cars… both of them… and the apartment… while you pay for it, until the lease ends. She also has insisted that it get signed before we show up in court today so that it's not up for debate." His deliberate pauses during the reiteration frustrated me, but not nearly as much as her newest demands. "Well, I'm not agreeing to that. This is Elizabeth's home too and I'm not going to make her move in the middle of the school semester. Gina will just have to be okay with everything else she is getting and her own car - only." I could hear Hank breath a sign of relief on the other end of the phone. My poor lawyer was frustrated that I'd been giving her everything when she was the cheater - but I couldn't get him to understand that I just wanted to be done with all of it. "I'm glad to hear that. I'll see you in my office for us to do a final catalog for the court case.", he replied. "Okay, good bye." I quipped and hung up. I just new this day had to get better eventually… if only it would start now.
