Chapter 1

Toby stood on the top of the balcony peering over the edge and wonder what the people on the street would thing if he though himself over the edge. He wondered if he would hit someone that was just trying to get home to their family or maybe someone that was just trying to get to work and have an easy go lucky day. Then he began to think of the things that would happen if he was to throw himself over the edge right at this moment, he wondered if the media would come out and make a spectacle about it like they usually did when someone did jump out of a high rise.

He also began the think of what people would remember of him if he would be reminded like the other people his age that had done something similar. There was a small story on the nightly news and there are a couple of so called "close friends" that do interviews and tell everyone that could listen sentimental stories about how they had known the other person since they were children no matter how true any of the stories were. Also in the community that Toby had been raised in there was also the thought that you could take advantage of the death of someone so that you could advance your position in the social hierarchy.

He mind wondered once again to all of the thoughts that how would his friends or family react to his passing and he couldn't pin down in his mind more than one or two other people that might even come close to truly missing him. The thought was enough to make him cry but he just stood over the edge and climbed onto the side of the old brick railing and placed slowly raised himself up on the edge. He looked over the edge and they noticed that from up this high the hundreds of people that were going amongst their day without even the thought of what toby was considering.

"Mister Toby," a quiet voice said from behind him said almost in a whisper

Toby didn't have to look behind him to recognize the voice of his maid Maria. She had been more of a mother to him than his real mother. He continued to look over the side of the balcony for several more moment and then he took a quick step behind him gracefully stopping off of the railing and back onto the balcony.

"Yes Maria." Toby said looking at the older looking Hispanic woman that had been there for him for the vast majority of his life.

Maria had old leather looking skin and a darker eyes that just seemed to almost whisper a maternal consider that toby hadn't ever seen from anyone in his family. She was a short and stout looking woman that he hadn't even given more than a though or two about over the last several years as he had grown out of seeking comfort from her on a daily basis. She looked at him for a moment and exhaled just a slight amount almost to say that the weight of the world had been taken off of her shoulders.

She looked right at him obviously less concerned that several moments ago and said," Miss Katlyn is down waiting for you Mister Toby and she has asked that I see what you is doing sir."

Toby just smiled knowing that his girlfriend didn't make any friends with the staff at his home. She was one of the people in his life that he hadn't even considered to be regretful if he was to throw himself over the edge of the railing. He laughed for several seconds after Maria had finished her what she was saying.

Toby looked at her and said," I'll be on my way in just a moment Maria," Toby strode past her and caught just a light smells of lilacs just for the slightest of seconds and he continued," How is Sophie settling in at school?"

Maria instantly light up at the mention of her granddaughters names. Her face instantly warming from the concern that she had had several minutes ago and having the warm look of an ecstatic teenager.

'She is very good Mister Toby she like it very much at school but she say she doesn't have any classes with anyone she know,' Maria said her Latino accent getting thicker from the excitement of the conversation.

Toby smiled for a second knowing that he had just made this older woman's day with just asking her a simple question that had no real bearing on his life in any way. As he looked at her she ushered him inside knowing that is he didn't hurry out the door then Katlyn would be on her way up. She pointed out the suit that he had wanted to have laid out for the day and she hustled away.

Toby was still smiling as she left the room so he could get ready. He dressed quickly looking in the full length mirror that was in his room. He made sure his pants were pressed correctly and that every piece of clothing matched both in sizing and in fashion style. The suit was simple blue pinstripe three piece with a pair of suspenders that he preferred more the style of an gentleman rather that someone that could just throw on a suit.

He slowly put on his tailored shirt looking at a scar that cut a crossed his chest from the left section of his hip to his nipple. The scar was horrific it looked as is the wound that he had gotten should have killed anyone that didn't have accessed the most skilled doctors and surgeons in the city and possibly the world. He ran his finger over the scar lightly and button up his shirt knowing that as much as he would like to forget the day that he got this scar he wouldn't ever get the chance to.

Suddenly he heard the angry thumping of a high heels striding towards his rooms. He knew that he should prepare himself but he couldn't decide if that was his girlfriend coming towards his room or even if the possibility was slim that his mother had decided to see him. As the footsteps continued he noticed that there was an extremely feminine voice fuming over the fact that he had kept her waiting.

Toby smiled recognizing the voice of Katlyn the self-proclaimed love of his life and the woman that had planned out the entirety of their life together without so much as a thought for what he wanted. Toby just sighed and tied his tie quickly and made put on the vest knowing that he was still going to get a verbal lashing no matter if he was prepared or not.

A beautiful woman around his age walked stormed into his room, she had the most ridiculous expression on her face in Toby's opinion. She looked like she was both angry and puzzled at the same time, like for some reason she just couldn't understand why anyone could keep her waiting. She was wearing a royal purple dress that accented her figure perfectly. She has sandy blonde that looked as if it was cultivated instead of being grown on a head. She also had looks that seemed to be sculpted by a master.

Katlyn looked direct at Toby and no longer had the puzzled look on her face there was just the look of shear unadulterated anger at being the one who was kept waiting.

She said," What is taking so long I was waiting for at least the past twenty minutes down stairs."

Toby gave her just a small smile and replied," I just wanted to look perfect for you and to make sure your father would approve for after school."

Her face relaxed the anger starting to diminish and make her appearance to beginning to return to just a look of absolute beauty and not a blemished sculpture.

She looked at him in the eyes and said," Then let's go the girls will be waiting for me at school and I don't want to keep them waiting any longer them you have already made them," Katlyn looked directly at Toby and as if telling him to try and say that he wasn't the one that was making her friends wait," and my father said that he would be at the restaurant later tonight so that you will have some time to change into something more appropriate."

Toby wanted to bust out laughing but instead he realized that there was no point in starting an argument here and now with her. He had been down that road often enough that he knew that all it would do is get him an earful and make both of them late for school.

She continued to talk about something but he didn't seem to really care all that he really wanted was just to make it so that he would get through one day without havening to get into an argument with Katlyn. He looked at her and threw on his jacket as quickly as he could nodding along and making it seem like he was paying attention onto her. Toby smiled once again at her and made sure she say his hand as he extended it out and made it so she would take it and allows the two of them to leave.

The two of them walked out of the bedroom and toby tried to step lightly as they walked making sure that the staff was all out of the way so that she wouldn't make a big deal out of the way that they were cleaning or that they were even being seen.

Maria was at the door with a small messenger bag waiting for Toby so that he would have everything he would need for the day. Even something like his bag was over the top something that scream money, a custom made bag didn't come cheap and Toby hated it but there was no getting around the fact that both Katlyn and his mother would throw a fit if he didn't look exactly like money came out of every orifice on his body.

Toby smiled at Maria one of the only reactions that he had had with her in the past several months. That was most likely the reason that Maria also didn't scream or have an adverse reaction when she found Toby standing on the edge of the balcony. He took that bag mouthing sorry and shooting a quick glance at Maria and she warmly returned the smile.

Katlyn and Toby reached the and quickly and made it to the elevator. Toby pressed the button and the door opened immediately. Stepping in Katlyn stopped talking probably the only thing that toby liked about the elevator. She was claustrophobic and hated talking while inside. Toby pressed the ground floor button and looked over at her quickly, and saw the slight annoyance that she had on just to cover up the fact that she was terrified of the small confined space that was slowly creeping down the height of the building.

Toby just smiled the only time that he felt like he knew the real version of her was when they were in the elevator and she let her guard down. The smile on his face grew a little wider as he felt like he knew her better for the two minutes that the elevator descended and she bared her soul along with her fear. Toby only smiled not because he wanted to see her afraid but because it was the only time that she wouldn't

Toby had forgot exactly what he had wanted to end his life for the moment when he was reminded exactly why he stayed with this girl and when it came down to it that was all that really mattered to him.
