Revelations

While I was falling, I felt a small pain enter through my upper back as the ground approached me.

I opened my eyes; I had been laying face down on the pavement.

There's a small crater where I had fallen, about 1 meter in radius.

So, I can't even die?

"Fuck!" I screamed while punching the ground, then I began to cry.

I just let everything go, I had been hurting since I was born after all.

Looking at the spot where my fist was now at, I found that the ground under it was cracked.

What the hell is this? I wiped my tears to see if I was hallucinating. Nope, the crack was still there.

That's when I also caught the hint of a shimmer in my peripheral.

My eyes were dry, so what was this?

I focused on the shimmer, the closest thing I could compare it to is a heat mirage.

I stuck my hand out to touch it. I don't know what I was expecting to be honest, but it was like touching a textureless wall that was warm.

So, this is why I couldn't die?

I struck the barrier with my fist, it neutralized the force of my punch. I felt no recoil and the barrier took no damage.

1 hour later and I'm back in my apartment.

My door is hanging off of its hinges, I must've broken it on my way up to the rooftop. Just goes to show how bad this place really is.

I closed my door the best I could, and threw myself on my make-shift bed on the floor.

I starred at the cracks in my cieling, considering my next move.

There's a barrier around me. While I was falling off the complex, I felt a sudden pain in my back.

I sat and reached behind my back. It was something metallic, but smooth. Kind of like a metal rock.

I went to the bathroom to look in the mirror. I turned my bathroom light on and found that my mirror had been shattered.

Tch. Great...

I also happened to remember how loud I had been earlier aswell.

There's a chance I might get a noise complaint, but the landlord rarely responds to anyone's needs anyway, so I shouldn't worry about it.

Still, I need to find out what this barrier is and what it does. It seems to protect me perfectly, but why now?

When I was being broken down everyday, where was this?

Whatever, I just need to figure out what it can do.

(2 hours Later)

I compiled a list of everything I learned so far.

Rules and Abilities of the Barrier:

1. The barrier refracts, trasmits, and reflects light.

2. The barrier is semi-permeable.

3. The barrier won't let me die.

4. Under normal circumstances, I can freely manipulate the barrier.

5. The barrier can change size and shape. It can even outline my body perfectly.

6. The barrier can block, distort, or capture sound.

7. The barrier is invincible.

8. The barrier can extend up to 2 meters in radius and shrink extremely fast.

9. Under normal circumstances, the barrier can't be seen.

10. The barrier can recoil anything if I will it at 2x the force.

11. The barrier can distort gravity amoung other things inside of it.

This is what I managed to find out and it changes everything. I'm essentially not even human anymore.

I'm no longer bound by the rules of society. No one can hurt me anymore, and no one can tell me what to do.

A smile crept across my ugly face and I laughed.

Perhaps, this is karma. Maybe the world's more fair than I thought.

Money, academics, looks, physical strength, it all means nothing to me now.

I can finally pay those bastards back who wronged me.

As malicious and evil thoughts flooded my mind, another thought came to the forefront.

What would be the point? What's the purpose in hurting those weaker than myself? I can only pity them now.

I went to bed with mixed feelings that night.

When morning came, I performed my regular routine and headed off for school. I was still incredibly sore, but my feelings toward the pain had changed.

It was like I was saying goodbye to an old friend.

Wait, why am I even going to school?

It no longer yields any benefit. Oh well, I might as well go since I'm almost there. It's not like anything bad can happen.

I walked through the front gates and toward the main entrance.

"Ew, it's that guy again."

"How could you even give birth to something like that?"

"I know, he's probably a creep."

They weren't being subtle, but that's normal. The main difference today was that I remembered that my barrier had the property to cancel out noise, so I did just that.

Ignorance truly is bliss.

I approached my classroom and opened the door. A few people looked at me with disgust. I just refracted the light around me to blur their faces.

This is amazing. My life's finally looking up.

The teacher went on about his lesson until it was the bell.

A blurred figure suddenly stepped in front of me. I removed the blur effect to see who it was, it was Carissa.

"I asume you finished the homework, give it to me," she demanded.

For a moment, my instinctive fear kicked in, but my new confidence kicked it aside.

Money, power, looks, everything she had couldn't do a thing to me. Even if she went after my family, I didn't care about them. I have no weaknesses; I'm completely invincible.

"I don't have it," I said upfront.

"I'm sorry, what was that?" She asked rhetorically.

"I forgot to do it," I added.

"Great, not only are you ugly, but you're also stupid. You must have no redeeming-" Carissa said before I muted the world.

Her mouth kept moving and she was throwing up hand gestures. As time went on, she looked increasingly frustrated.

She lifted her right hand up and slapped me, of course, I didn't flinch or even feel a thing for that matter.

She, on the otherhand pulled her hand back in pain. Recoil barrier.

I turned the sound back on and heard her freaking out.

"What the hell is your face made of freak!?" she yelled.

I starred blankly at her. I didn't really feel too much. She's kind of just a nice view even if I don't like her.

"Don't think I'll let you get away with this, I'll make you hurt," She said.

She was holding her right hand now and left the classroom.

When school was over I began walking home.

I wasn't doing anyone's bidding anymore, nor would I bend over backward for anyone ever again.

"Hey, buddy, you got that money you owe me," Chris said from behind.

I turned around to face him and his gang.

"Nope, I don't owe you a thing," I said coldly.

"Eh, what was that? Did that beating from yesterday leave you brain damaged or something?" Chris said jokingly.

Ava and Tristan laughed.

He knocked on my barrier where my forehead was.

"What's up with this forehead, it's all metal-like. Goes to show how hard-headed you are," he said.

"Welp, I'll be heading home now if that's all," I said as I turned away and started walking home.

I felt some feedback on my barrier where my shoulder was. I turned around to see Chris with his had on my barrier.

"Don't touch me," I said, smacking his hand away.

Recoil damage only applies to things on the outside of the barrier. My force on the inside was siphoned to the outside, and I dealt double the damage.

"W-hat the hell!? You bastard, you'll pay for that!" Chris said as he threw a punch as me.

My ears were met by a satisfying crunch as the bones in his right hand shattered, and his hand bent the wrong way.

He screamed in pain and fell to one knee.

I grabbed him by the hair and made him look me in the eyes.

"Piss off and go to hell," I said before slamming his face into the concrete.

Don't worry, he didn't die, just passed out.

Ava and Tristan looked at me in fear. That's a new look, I kind of like it. Screw what I said about there being no point, I get it know.

This is the feeling of unadulterated power.

"Take your little friend here, and never show your faces to me again," I commanded.

They stood there frozen.

"Get moving," I added.

They hopped to it, and began to drag Chris away.

"What do you think you're doing?" Olivia asked now standing in front of me.

Oh, this is just too rich.
