10 Made For Each Other

One day her heart

will stop mentioning you.

                                    - r. h. Sin

The next morning:

" Once upon a time,

A few mistakes ago,

I was in your sight,

You got me all alone,

You found me,

You found me,

You found me." The alarm sang with all its might.

" Tamsyn! Stop that damn alarm. I'm sick of that song." Cassie yelled from her room.

" I second that." Sarah called out.

" Be a sport, sweethearts. Now, shush. The next lines are my favorite." Syn replied back with glee. Collective groans could be heard from the other two. The alarm went on without a care in the world:

".... And I realize

The blame is on me...."

"  'Cause I knew you were trouble

when you walked in

So shame on me now

Flew me to places I'd never been

'Til you put me down, oh

I knew you were trouble

when you walked in

So, shame on me now

Flew me to places I'd never been. " Syn sang aloud out of tune.

" And....that's it. Another beautiful day." Syn sighed aloud after stopping the alarm.

" Yeah, and it had a great start. Your singing sucks Ms. Wolfe." Cassie entered Syn's room with a tragic expression.

" Who...."

" Who cares!? It's the lyrics I love." Sarah who had joined Cassie interrupted Syn and imitated her with an eye roll.

Syn gave a big, goofy smile and was about to say something when Cassie exclaimed, "Aren't we forgetting something!?."

" Chill babe. I bet she's all cuddled up with her love." Sarah grinned.

" Let's go and find out." Syn scrambled out of her bed, narrowly managing to prevent herself from falling headfirst into the floor from getting her blankets twisted about her leg.

The girls found a blissfully sleeping Jo, cocooned inside a blanket; with her own personal heater beside her.

" Aww..... don't they look cute! Should we wake them up? " Cassie wondered in a loud whisper.

" Nop. Let's head down and ask Tobias about last night. We'll wake them up after an hour. Afterall they must have been tired after the journey." Syn suggested.

The three got ready and went down in search of Tobias. Instead, they found Leonardo putting the last touches to a sumptuous looking meal.

" Good morning." The girls called out cheerfully.

" You can cook?" Cassie sounded stupified.

" Oh, yes. I can. " Leonardo replied proudly. "Our previous Alpha pair made and brought into action a rule concerning the topic, 'who will cook!?' The children, irrespective of the  gender, are supposed to learn the basics of cooking since they turn four. The ones who had no culinary skills whatsoever were asked to assist the experts in the kitchen.  Now, each and everyone in our pack have superb culinary skills."

"Woww....that's awesome. You should definitely introduce me to some young man who can cook with flair from your pack." Cassie flashed a big smile at Leonardo.

" Now, that's something I can never do if you mean to pursue any sort of relationship." Leonardo replied.

" What if I'm considering a one night stand....of course including a dinner prepared by him? And then he may fall in love with me because I appreciate his culinary skills!" Cassie blinked her eyes innocently.

" Not even then, Ms. Foodie. I'm so sorry." Leonardo chuckled.

" Oh, no! There goes my hope for lifetime of 'no cooking, only eating'." Cassie said with a mock wail.

" But why? Is it because we are witches?" Sarah raised her eyebrows.

" Well, it's like this. Werewolves have predestined partners. We call them mates. It's sort of like a soulmate. Someone born just for the other. Literally, made for each other. Most of the werewolf population do not even date other women or men. They wait for their mates to show up. Some even wait for decades. But no matter how long the wait is, they find each other at last."

" But the librarian is a human. She said that she was the mate of a member of your pack." Syn mused out loud.

" The humans are potential mates, yes. Except for the most powerful wolves, like Alpha and Beta. Not so far, anyway. They do need powerful mates to stand by them and lead the pack, you see. But then again, casual relationships are not practised because of the inevitable result. Once the mates meet, the pull they feel towards each other and the bond they share is too strong. They will have to leave the current partner. Why play with some innocent's feelings? That's not right. So, prevention is better." Leonardo explained.

"Alright. So the problem is not that we are humans or witches. But it is that we may not be the predestined mate. Got it." Sarah summarised.

" Well, isn't that nice! They never have to fear whether he or she will desert them. " Syn said with a barely traceable note of sadness in her voice.

" Not exactly, Syn. Yes, it has its own advantages but disadvantages too. Some do not seem to realise how blessed they are and they act on selfish impulses. There had been instances in the history of how the werewolves, irrespective of gender, had tried to steal the mate of another. Some are not ready to wait and the temptation of a partner, child and the longing for a family of their own makes them take extreme actions. Mates are the Rainbows that represent hope; The Home. Since they can't have a werewolf baby with a human, unless they are mates, they are left with the option of abducting a werewolf male/ female. But they tend to ignore the fact that that particular one may be the mate of someone else. Such cases always have tragic endings. I guess the decades long wait and the sight of their acquaintances finding their mates make them lose their sanity. Afterall jealousy and hopelessness are poisonous emotions."

" That's sick! " Cassie said, making a face.

" Yup." Leonardo agreed.

" How was the situation at the border?" Syn asked Leonardo.

" Bad. If it were not for your healer friend, we would be burying our brethren today." Leonardo said with a strained smile.

" Oh. Any progress regarding the identity of the enemy?" Syn asked in a serious tone.

" Alpha and Beta has figured it out. They haven't yet shared the details with us. So I guess you'll have to ask them." Leonardo shrugged.

" Alright. Can we pack up a bit of food to take along with us? We have to get going right now." Syn asked.

" Why? What happened?" Leonardo was bewildered.

" Felt like taking a long walk. We'll see you later. " Sarah explained while Cassie and Syn gathered a bit of everything and wrapped them in aluminium foils. They waved at Leonardo and got out of the pack house. He stood there motionless for a while and then hurriedly send a message to someone.

" Why don't we take a day off too?" Cassie mused out loud.

" Yes, let's!" Sarah agreed.

" Should we? It's only the second day and ....."

" Are you missing him already!?" Cassie's eyes had a teasing look in them.

Syn who had been sipping the fruit juice started coughing violently and Sarah had a hard time laughing and patting Syn on her back simultaneously.

" I just met him, for heaven's sake!!" Syn rolled her eyes. The nonchalance she aimed for didn't work out well as her eyes were filled with tears caused by the violent coughing.

"Yeah, yup, definitely." Cassie nodded her eyes. " Why the walk, though?" Cassie turned somber.

" Don't tell me you are not enjoying it." Syn said and continued when Cassie gave her a sardonic look, " What do you see, Cassie? Any prophecies, yet?"

"No. Nothing at all. Not even a clue through the dreams. I've had peaceful sleep for the past two days." Cassie shrugged.

" I hate being left in the dark. That irresponsible Alpha hasn't yet made his appearance and we are left with only the fragments of information. You haven't encountered a prophecy, too." Syn sounded frustrated.

" You know that it can't be forced. Prophecies find me, not the other way around." Cassie said.

" I know, babe. I'm sorry. It's just that..."

" You worry about your mom." Sarah sighed.

" Yeah."

"Listen, she sent you here because she trusts you. You came here representing her. You can't let her down, Syn. Slow and steady wins the race. Let's take one step at a time. We'll have a talk with Lorenzo this evening to gather info. At the meantime, let's maintain our cover of University students." Sarah tried to soothe her friend.

"Yes. To the enemy that may be spying on the pack, we are only a group of students who had come so far from home to attend the University. We are staying with the pack because our parents are acquainted with the former Luna. That's all. We have to keep up the appearances, no matter what." Cassie agreed.

" Yes, I know." Syn sighed.

" Hug time!!" Sarah announced and ran to hug the other two.

" Careful. Don't squash my poor burger." Syn wailed with a big smile.

"No worries." Cassie plucked the burger from her hands and bit into it as soon as the hug broke.

"Cassandra!!!"

"Here you go," Cassie handed Syn a chocolate filled pancake and laughed at her drooling expression.

" Thanks to the Moon Goddess, we called the trio yesterday evening. What with all those mess yesterday, we wouldn't have been able to call them at night." Sarah recalled.

"Marge would have taken the first flight here to beat the crap out of us." Syn laughed out loud.

" That she would have." Sarah agreed wholeheartedly.

" Hey, wait a bit! Thanks to the Moon Goddess!? Sarah??" Cassie asked with an incredulous expression.

" Well, we've been hearing that often enough that it has rubbed on me." Sarah shrugged.

" Don't let your mom hear you." Cassie said with a shudder.

"True. But I should do it once in her presence. It will drive her crazy." Sarah laughed with a naughty smile, an idea the duo shared with her wholeheartedly.

The rest of the walk was pleasant enough. The 'desert girls', as they called themselves, enjoyed playing in the snow till they reached the campus.

"See you all in the afternoon." Sarah waved while the trio parted ways.

" Don't wait for me. I'll be in the library." Syn replied.

"Alright." Cassie and Sarah nodded and left.

Syn was deep in her thoughts when a pleasant, husky voice interrupted her musings.

" What has put that frown on your face, Ms. Curiosity? Some unsolved mystery?"

"Kael!"

"God morgen, mitt hjerte." Kael smiled, but frowned in the next moment.

'Why did I call her that? No. She's a human. Kael James, you are an Alpha!! Don't you dare be reckless.'

"Kael!! Kael!!" Syn kept on calling him while he appeared to be deep in thought about something unpleasant.

' What happened just now? He was all smiles a moment, but has a scowl on his face in the next moment.'

"Huh!?" Kael responded at last in an indifferent tone.

"You said something and then you scowled. What happened?" Syn was puzzled.

" Nothing. I have to go. Alpha has called for me." Kael replied and started to move without waiting for her reply.

"Wait, is it something regarding what happened yesterday night?" Syn held his forearm to stop him in his tracks and asked earnestly.

"No. Don't worry. I have to go." Kael shrugged off her hand in one cold move and walked away from her.

Syn found herself hurting over the snub of a guy whom she had met a day before.

' Why the hell are my eyes tearing up!? Damn!! Get a hold of yourself girl. How dare he act so rude!? But he did try to console me. Or was it like asking me to stay clear of the matters concerning him or his pack? Does he dislike our presence here? That doesn't make sense. What's up with him!? Wait...why do I feel like something's strange?'

"It's the charm!" She exclaimed out loud. " It's heating up. Is there a threat nearby? It's the protection charm given by Mom. Is that threat the reason why he rushed out?" Syn murmured to herself while on her way to the classroom. She messaged her friends to stay alert, but didn't bother to give the reason. They knew of the danger involved in the current mission.

Her mood remained rotten through the whole morning. Kate and Alex tried to strike up a conversation but was always brushed off a tad too politely. After the last hour of school, she took up her things and exited the classroom right after the teacher. If she felt a poisonous gaze trained on her, she chose to ignore it.

"What happened to the lively girl I met yesterday?" Kate wondered out loud.

" No idea. She was happy enough when she left the pack house. Or, so Leo told me." Alex answered.

" Oh, quit worrying people. She tried to grab what was not hers in the first place  and failed miserably. Serves her right." Eliza sneered and left the class.

"Hey, wait. Explain!" Alex shouted. But she was long gone. "Damn! Can't that girl talk without making it sound like some riddle!?"

"She might be spewing some nonsense, Alex. You know that she doesn't like Syn." Kate tried to calm the troubled waters.

" Well, let's leave it then. You haven't met the other girls, have you? I'm going to the pack house. Care to join?" Alex asked Kate.

"Sure. I'd love to."

           -----------------------------------

" Leo! Sarah!" Cassie waved at the two standing near Leonardo's Volkswagen deep in conversation about something. They turned instinctively and saw Cassie coming towards them.

" Well, Cassie's here. Let's go then, Leo." Sarah said while motioning Cassie to get in the car.

"Where's Syn?"

" She's staying at the library. She'll come later." Cassie answered.

"Alright."

They reached the pack house without any incidents. Cassie, as usual chatted with ease and Sarah was busy letting the snowflakes kiss her cheeks by letting the window down.

" Hmm.....Something smells like heaven." Cassie let out a sigh.

" Its the special chicken roast stuffed with onion and butter-roasted potatoes." Jo replied with a grin. "It's Elora's special recipe, they said."

"Jo!! You are alright, aren't you?" The girls rushed to Jo and asked with concern.

"Of course, dummies. Now, leave all that. Alpha is here to meet us."
