Chapter 3: Bad Timing
The next day*
Zen is seriously questioning his choice of purchasing this bookstore.
"And that's the last of them." Medaka reported after killing off the last guy that wanted to get money from them in exchange for the 'protection fee' that other store owners have to pay in the neighborhood or their case, asking for some 'fun time' with Medaka—leading to many deaths by now. At Medaka's hands, funny enough.
This is what Zen gets for being cheap and buying such a bookstore so close to the area of criminal activities. Instead of buying a better bookstore or any building in a better location.
"You know, at this point. I feel like a bodyguard more than anything else right now." Medaka watched the corpse fade from existence just from pressing the button of the handheld push button switch given to her.
"You're living rent-free, food, and clothing." Zen begins listing out a small series of what is being provided for her staying here and protecting the bookstore from being robbed/destroyed.
"I didn't ask about being paid." Medaka shakes her head. "Being next to you is plenty since many things would happen to you."
Zen wanted to say that Medaka's presence alone caused many unusual events. Not him, but he kept his mouth shut because he honestly doesn't know if it's genuinely his presence instead of her, or maybe their presence caused so many people with suicidal desire to mess with them.
"Now I think about it, and I kinda feel stupid." Zen suddenly has an idea pop into his head and wonders why he didn't do it sooner. It would have saved him so much trouble of dealing with foolish people coming one after another. Well, save Medaka the problem of having to spill blood all the time.
Damn, now he thinks about it. This Medaka has no hesitation in killing others. Better arm himself further just in case Medaka decides she is bored with him and tries to end him afterward to prevent anything happening, or maybe she walks away. However, Zen shouldn't think with common sense with Medaka, who is abnormal. So he has already prepared many things just in case he ever has to fight Medaka.
"What makes you feel stupid?" Medaka look at Zen with more curiosity than ever now.
"Making a device that prevents others from coming to us with bad intentions." Zen feels stupid for not doing so on day one upon recovering his past life's memory and gaining his cheat. Therefore, he quickly creates a small device in the shape of a cube that can fit one's palm and make it so only those with anything related to harming him and Medaka in any way would forget about this place, then make them think about something else that's more important to do.
This device is based on the Fidelius Charm from the Harry Potter series, where it's a potent spell used to hide things or places or to conceal secrets. For the powerful Charm that could be used to hide a secret inside an individual's soul. The Witch or Wizard housed the secret was known as the Secret Keeper. A dwelling whose location had been protected by this spell was then invisible, intangible, unplottable, and soundproof. This is an ancient spell, one of the most ancient of all. As only the Secret Keeper can reveal the secret, the spell no longer influences the person told about the secret.
In a way, the device is somewhat like the Secret Keeper, but at the same time, there is no need to hide the bookstore entirely from everyone. Only those with bad intentions, no matter how they think otherwise, whether it's for the greater good or not. The Secret Keeper Cube will make sure none of these self-claim saints would find his bookstore.
"So, is that what's going to make those thugs come here?" Medaka asks Zen, eyeing the little cube placed on the counter.
"Yup. This little device does that and more." Zen begins explaining the Secret Keeper Cube's features.
"This pretty much makes my job pointless." Medaka stares at Zen blankly.
"Didn't hire you in the first place. But, some people might be coming here that can bypass the Secret Keeper Cube somehow." And by that, Zen meant those with unique Semblance based on luck or outright bullshit abilities that can easily find out all the secrets in the world.
Luckily, Zen has already worn a device that prevents that from affecting him. Mainly make it so he won't be unexpectedly unlucky.
"I went from protecting the bookstore to protecting a little cube." Medaka said in disbelief, then sighed in the end.
"Hey, this little cube is what makes it so we won't have to deal with unwanted visitors." Zen said to Medaka, then not even a second after. The front door opens, ringing the bell to announce a customer has come in.
Medaka glance at the customer, who is looking at her with lust in their eyes, then turn her gaze back to Zen, with eyes that question if what he said was true or not.
"I said bad intention." Zen's face didn't change, but he is secretly cursing inside that pretty much up to this point. All the visitors were male; the only females were Blake and Ruby, but that was a few days ago.
Medaka raises an eyebrow and continues to stay quiet.
"Hey, what do you want?" Zen asks the customer, eager to get the guy to leave his store straight away and not just stand there lusting over Medaka's body. Not that he could blame the guy; after all, Medaka is one hot girl.
"Huh?" The male customer looks at Zen blankly but dazed by Medaka's appearance and goes back to looking at her.
"If you're not here to buy anything, then leave." Zen said coldly, finally causing the male customer to snap out of it.
"What right for you to say that to me when I'm the customer here?" The male customer scowl at Zen.
"I own this place; therefore, I have the right to allow people to come into my store to purchase my books or not." Zen stares at the male customer with cold eyes, where he is already prepared to deal with the guy that makes him regret coming into his store. Of course, out of small mercy, he won't kill him, unlike Medaka, that would.
"Then you should know the saying, 'The customers are always right.' So shut up and let me chat with this beautiful worker, who was going to introduce me to some books to buy when you rudely interrupted us." The male customer sneers at Zen, not caring if he is the owner of this place.
Zen points at the male customer with his right index and middle finger in the form of a handgun, where at the end of the fingertips light up a small flame of indigo with lighter tones going to almost white the closer it is to the source. Unlike the Cloud Flame, on his right middle finger is another ring that's meant for the Mist Flame, and it's a unique ring for this ring is the 666 Hell Ring, also called the Unlucky Ring.
The Mist Flame's characteristic is Construction, which makes it optimal to be used in conjunction with illusions. It can be used to create realistic illusions, easily fooling the senses. The created realistic illusions can be used for either escaping or rendering the opponent vulnerable to an attack. More powerful illusions can also affect bodily functions, such as creating illusionary organs that act as real organs as long the Mist Flame is still there.
As for the 666 Hell Ring. It's part of the set of six super-rare Mist-attribute Rings. Each ring bears a different 'curse' and an ability called 'War Potential Doubling', which increases the user's fighting strength many times in exchange for their soul. Of course, Zen made sure to remove that part; no way was he going to lose his soul from his creation. In addition, this Hell Ring can cause one fortune to play out after the 666th misfortune has come to pass. But, with the changes of making it to absorb any misfortune around the wielder instead of experiencing the 666 misfortunes.
Firing the 'bullet' made of Mist Flame as if Zen's handgun is genuinely a gun. The 'bullet' fired, not making a noise, and instantly hit directly in between the male customer's eyebrows before the guy could even say anything or do anything. His head snaps back and falls backward without trying to regain his balance.
Medaka walks up to the male customer, then looks back at Zen.
"He is unconscious."
Zen nods, "Yeah, mind throwing him out of the store?" Honestly, if it wasn't for the fact that this customer came in without any bad intentions was the only reason why he didn't outright kill the guy.
She didn't even think about it for even a second. Medaka grabs the front part of the male customer's shirt with just one arm to pick a grown man like nothing, then walks to the front door. Open it, toss the unconscious man outside the bookstore and close the door afterward.
"So, are you planning to stay here and sell books?" Medaka asks Zen, as she just recently finished reading the last book available in the building.
"That or if someone's luck desire to cause unwanted events to occur." Zen stares at Medaka, trying to hint that she is the one that keeps on causing unwanted visitors to show up. Even though she wasn't technically doing anything about it, it's just that her existence alone is warping reality itself.
As if fate heard Zen's inner thoughts.
A vortex appears above Zen and Medaka in the middle of the room. Someone drops out of it, and the vortex disappears afterward.
Zen didn't hesitate the very second he saw the person and placed his right index and middle finger against the side of his head.
"One Thought to Know." Zen activates one of the six arts of the Thought Scripture, and what he recreated early on that quickly made him the strongest in the world. Even just this first art alone allows him to understand something perfectly. Similar to Medaka's The End, but less restricted in learning and methods in said learning. Making it possible for him to understand the impossible easily and not be too overwhelmed pushes his mind into becoming so smart he crossed back into stupid like Medaka's mind already has in many subjects.
Anyway, One Thought to Know also helped him learn about Medaka's history; now, he is doing the same with the person who has fallen into this world, just as Medaka did. In addition to being the key to killing Medaka if he can catch her off guard; otherwise, he would die before he could use it on time.
Damn him for not working on his body further.
Zen sighed as he got what he needed and no longer continued to use the One Thought to Know. Honestly, this ability alone is beyond powerful. Yet, he still obtained such an impossible ability thanks to his cheat creating a device to give him the modified version of Thought Scripture and being able to use it without any side-effect.
"So, who is this?" Medaka walks over to the person with curious eyes. Yet, prepared to launch a killing blow if the person reacted in a way that requires it. Well, not that she would do it since the person is now unconscious.
The person in mind is Ichiko Sakura from the series Binbougami ga, and the main character is just like Medaka; however, unlike Medaka. Ichiko possesses an extraordinary, godlike, infinite amount of luck or good fortune that swiftly erases almost any trouble she encounters. Her luck also gives her superhuman beauty, attractiveness, intelligence, health, agility, libido, perception, senses, intuition, instincts, humor, wealth, willpower, talent, brawn, aura, eloquence, and charisma. As well as pressing a perfect body as a living being from birth.
However, while she possesses godlike luck, she can absorb other people's luck, which can sometimes lead to tragedy or death. Of course, her Luck-Absorbing Aura can be sealed by extraordinary items, and the luck she absorbs can be taken and redistributed. This power is continuous and passive.
Overall, another Mary Stu but mainly toward luck aka plot armor than Medaka's The End, which helps her learn the impossible. Ichiko has plot armor on her side that makes things go her way. As well as making others more unlucky while facing; therefore, causing those who want to do anything terrible to her would fall into a series of misfortune instead.
Anyway, this Ichiko just recently met the God of Misfortune, Momiji Binboda, whose duty is to restore the energy balance on Earth by stealing the overwhelming Fortune Energy from Ichiko. Yet, this Ichiko's luck is more potent than the canon version and made Ichiko transfer to another reality to allow her to keep her godlike luck and continue to absorb more luck nearby.
So, Zen quickly walked over and slapped a wristband-shaped device that sealed away Ichiko's Luck-Absorbing Aura. Because no way was he going to die because of his luck being drained. Even the 666 Hell Ring won't be enough to stop him from experiencing one of the worse moments of his life with so much of his luck being drained away, causing misfortune to gather around him.
"Why?" Medaka look at Zen.
Zen gives Medaka a summary of who Ichiko is and why he put the wristband-shaped device on her.
"Is this place going to be a hub for random girls with some sort of innate abilities that put them outside of the crowd?" Medaka asks Zen, causing the guy to begin to pale and break into cold sweats.
"I seriously hope not." Zen honestly wanted to make a techomagical device to prevent that from happening, but he knew how bullshit some people's plot armor would able them to bypass the impossible.
"Why not? From the many books I've read about this world and some from my world so far. Many men would love to have more girls in their life, forming a harem." Medaka blinks several times, not expecting Zen's response of not wanting more girls to appear in his life.
"What gives you the idea that I would want a harem?" Zen look at Medaka in disbelief. "If you had managed to watch some anime back in your world of having harem in it. 80% of the time, the main character has an awful time getting everyone to be in harmony without having some outside influence forcing them to unite as a whole to face the obstacle. Leading to a bond developing as a whole after overcoming the challenge placed for them." Zen can still recall all the bullcrap main characters with harem had to deal with. Unless they somehow have sex with ALL their harem members, it's near impossible for everyone to get along.
"But you've been checking me out for a while, though. Was that not a sign of you being interested in wanting to have me? Then this Ichiko person came here, and I saw a hint of lust for her body like you did for mine. Leading to me thinking you wanted a harem." Medaka tilts her head. "Is that not so?"
Zen's left eyebrow begins to twitch, "There are other men that would look at you lust and still have the self-control to not do anything about it. While I am interested in you and Ichiko, there are many reasons why I wouldn't go through it." That and having to come up with a new technomagical device to prevent any new otherworldly visitors from appearing in this world.
Zen did that secretly and made sure to have the technomagical device be small and attach it to Ichiko's wristband; that way, it would be impossible to break, for it would also use her godlike luck to prevent it from breaking in any way.
"So if I were to offer you to have sex right now, you wouldn't take it?" Medaka asks in a monotone. Even go far as to begin to strip.
"Please stop, and yes, but I wouldn't take it. Since it feels like I'm forcing you to do this." Zen is starting to have a headache, and he wonders if this is what it feels like having to deal with her daily. Damn, this Medaka is still somewhat like her canon version in more than many ways.
"But, you're not forcing me. I'm doing this of my free will. Since I learned about sex back in my world, I've been curious for a while and wanted to try it, but I didn't due to not finding anyone worthy enough to touch me. Until now." Medaka looked at Zen with no change in her eyes.
"What the hell did I come into?!"
Ah, Ichiko is awake and not at the best time either. Wow, even the Luck-Absorbing Aura suppressed still didn't make things go great for him.
