3 Chapter 2 - Desperation

It seemed that even I was a little more panicky than I thought as I was being passive aggressive in situation where our situation is not clear. For now, I took a breath to calm myself.

"Sorry for the sudden outburst. I was still confused about the current situation. Could you please explain from the start?" As I saw the head priest beginning to take a deep breath, further back, I could see the increasing skeptical gaze from other priests.

"No, I should apologize. As you said, you might have saw this as kidnapping. No, I guess it is nothing other than kidnapping when we brought you without your consents. Still, let us move to somewhere we can talk. I don't think we will be able to talk right now anyway." As his eyes moved to the situation at my back, where Katy stopped crying from the sudden situation, but looked like she might cry for different reason, I couldn't agree more.

"Guys, stop fooling around and come. Luna and Sera, don't bully Katy anymore if you want to stop the exact thing that's pissing you off. Come on, let's go."

Even though I REALLY didn't want to get involved in that situation, I had to drag Reed first before they started to follow. What are you guys? Magnets? Or mother hen and her children?

As we walked down a clean corridor with red carpet, I saw that the city down the mountain through the window. As I was admiring the view, the priest started too talk again.

"First, we should introduce our world to you guys. Welcome to world of Edelfrit, created by our creator goddess Edelfrit. Currently, we're inside the main church of the goddess, located on our last strong hold of races." After brief pause, he continued. "And I am the current Pope. Currently, our world is on brink of extinction. We don't know when it started, but a gate to devil's world was opened, and the demonic beast started to evolve to become demons from the miasma. Their assault, combined with the devil's, were not something we were prepared for, not could last against. Currently, we are barely able to hang on thanks to demons and devils that are still relatively friendly to us." As we arrived in front of a door, he turned back to us.

"Still, even that won't last long. Currently, all those who can fight are sent to the frontlines, including the king, just to maintain the frontlines. And same with resources. As such, despite the fact that we should be welcoming you with proper ceremonies, we are unable to afford those luxuries. As such, only our princess has come back to welcome you guys. We sincerely apologize." He lowered his head as those words came between gritted teeth.

As we were getting flustered from not know what to do, Reed stepped forward and asked him to raise his head. When we raised his head, we could finally see his eyes that seemed to be desperate, yet almost given up.

Now, we could tell the reason why there was nobody stopping me when I was talking to the pope with the way I did before. For them, pride was something they discarded long ago. Right now, they did not care about something as TRIVIAL as that. Even if the supposed hero in front of them were some children, or didn't look to have even wielded a weapon, we are their ONLY hope, a hope they have already almost gave up on anyway.
