Dr. Kanou's Death

"I brought this man back, but I think it's better if you handle him," Lin Yi said, tossing Dr. Akihiro Kanou to the ground.

Dr. Kanou lay amidst the artificial one-eyed ghouls he had created. Despite knowing escape was impossible, he desperately crawled over their bodies, driven by his human instincts. His appearance was truly wretched and pitiful.

Kurona and Nashiro cradled their lifeless parents in their arms, their clothes stained with blood. Anger flickered in their eyes as they glared at Dr. Kanou.

"It's just a misunderstanding. I wanted to give them a better future, stronger bodies, and longer lives," Dr. Kanou pleaded, desperately trying to explain himself.

"It's only a matter of time. Soon you'll understand that what I'm doing is right. You have to understand me."

Dr. Kanou's leg bore a deep, bone-revealing wound. With a thud, he fell back onto the pile of bodies, trembling in fear as he stared at a face that met a gruesome death.

Reluctantly, he attempted to justify himself to the two sisters, but how could Kurona and Nashiro listen to his deceit? Both of them raised their guns and aimed at Dr. Kanou's head.

"You can't kill me. I am the future of all humanity, the future of the new humans," Dr. Kanou pleaded.

"You're all fools who can't comprehend my greatness. You are sinners, sinners of the new humans!" Dr. Kanou's shouts were soon drowned out by the sound of gunfire.

The gunshots continued relentlessly until all the bullets were expended. The sisters' magazines were empty, but they kept pulling the trigger, the guns clicking in vain.

Dr. Kanou's face lay shattered.

"He's already dead, and you've avenged your parents," Lin Yi reached out, placing his hand on the heads of the two sisters, offering comforting words.

The sisters clung tightly to Lin Yi, pouring all their strength into the embrace, as if they wished to merge with him. Tears streamed down their faces.

Lin Yi didn't know what to say, so he allowed them to cry.

After a while, their sobs subsided. The bloodstains on the ground had dried up.

"Senior, we have nothing left," Kurona trembled, her voice filled with tears.

"Even if we don't have a clear future in mind, we can still live and remain strong. Don't worry, I'll always be here," Lin Yi sighed.

He felt the slight tremors in the fragile bodies of the two sisters, but they held him even tighter.

Later, he overheard the two sisters whisper in unison.

"Yes."

Lin Yi intended to say something comforting, but he suddenly felt a dampness on his clothes. Lowering his gaze, he realized that the two sisters had fallen asleep in his embrace, holding on tightly as if afraid he would disappear.

Since learning of their parents' deaths, the two sisters had been mentally unwell. They hadn't slept for a day and night, and now, exhausted from the battle and emotional turmoil, they succumbed to sleep.

Lin Yi had no choice but to carry the two sisters and depart from that place.

Before leaving the laboratory, Lin Yi set it ablaze, obliterating everything inside.

Unusually fatigued, Lin Yi, despite his enhanced physique, hadn't felt this tired in a long time. After returning to the villa, he promptly fell asleep.

The next morning, at the break of dawn, Lin Yi slowly opened his eyes, sensing two small bodies shifting in his embrace. On either side, there were delicate and beautiful faces, one with silky black hair and the other with snow-white hair.

Indeed, they were Kurona and Nashiro, the two sisters.

Lin Yi recollected the events of the previous night. Though the sisters had fallen asleep, they hadn't let go. He couldn't bring himself to separate them, so he had slept in that position.

But it seemed he had slept peacefully throughout the night. He pondered whether to consider himself a righteous gentleman or worse than an animal.

A soft chuckle escaped Lin Yi's lips as he noticed Kurona's trembling eyebrows. He gently pinched her cheek, savoring its soft and smooth texture.

Kurona could no longer feign sleep. She reluctantly opened her beautiful eyes, blushing, and timidly gazed at Lin Yi.

"It's time to wake up. I only took two days off, and I have to return today. There are still many matters in the 20th Ward that I need to attend to."

"Yes," Kurona obediently nodded, releasing her grip around Lin Yi's waist.

Lin Yi then turned his attention to Nashiro beside him, but he didn't need to do anything. He simply waved his hand in front of her eyes.

She quickly opened her eyes.

"I... I'm awake too."

Lin Yi smiled faintly. Perhaps this innocence and charm were unique to the youth. He yawned and got up from the bed.

It seemed the two sisters had already positioned themselves as his young wives.

Just as he was about to put on his coat, Kurona handed him a windbreaker and helped him put it on. As they left, Nashiro even took the initiative to hold his hand.

Regarding Dr. Kanou's situation, Lin Yi contacted the person in charge of the Sixth Ward during the journey back to inform them.

Things had changed. Lin Yi now held the position of a Special Class Investigator, one of the nine appointed investigators with supreme authority within the CCG. He didn't need to explain anything to the person in charge of the Sixth Ward.

As long as he handled the aftermath properly, it would suffice.
