2 The Prologue Part 2: Infiltration

Lem and Nyla had made it to the entrance gate of the Academy.

"Okay you go ahead from above," directed Lem "Wait at the gate until I've gained the guards' attention from the front, I'll signal you to make your way inside."

"What will the signal be?"

"Trust me Angel, you'll know when you see it."

"Okay, whatever you say," Nyla spoke out to try to cease their conversation for the time being. "Lem one last thing..." Nyla runs up to Lem and gives him a hug. Lem is surprised by this. "Thanks for doing this with me, and don't get caught, we could easily get expelled from Renegade if anything goes wrong. So, don't break our promise we made when we were little. I'd never forgive you if you did."

Lem could feel how sincere she was with the words she spoke. Nyla buried her face upon his chest and hugs him tight. There was one other time she had hugged him like this. On that tragic day, 10 years ago.

Lem couldn't help but have a flashback to that moment. He could see the burning house all over again. He could feel the smoke getting trapped inside his lungs, the over-bearing heat from the flames dancing upon his skin. He saw a little girl he couldn't reach even though he extended his arms as far as he could out to her, but she wouldn't grab his hand...

Lem awakes from his flashback. He hugs her tighter and says, "I won't break it. I promise, Angel."

"Good. Well it's time for me to get going, and, oh yeah!" Nyla says then punched Lem straight in the gut again. Once more Lem had the wind knocked out of him, he was trying to gasp for air. "That's what you get for calling me 'Angel' all the time. See ya!" Nyla went to gate and hid, awaiting the signal Lem would give her to go inside.

"Gosh, for a little girl, she's heavy-handed as hell!" Lem said to himself while holding his stomach.

Lem proceeds through the gate and began to walk the remaining distance to the front of the Academy facility.

Lem starts to wonder: How should I approach the guards? How would I be able to distract them all? Will I be able to buy her enough time?

He didn't know how he was going to do this, but he knew he'd find a way.

----------

At the entrance of the school doors were two school guards on duty. This should be easy, Lem thought and starts limping up to the group of guards. The first guard finally noticed him walking towards him and meets Lem halfway.

He points his flashlight at Lem, "What are you doing out here. All civilians should be indoors right now it's past curfew," said the first guard.

"Well, sonny, you see I'm sort of lost. I was trying to make my way to the young whippersnapper's coffee shop over close to the plaza, but I guess I took a few wrong turns. Could you direct me there so I can get my coffee beans for tomorrow morning," Lem replies.

"Um... I guess. Well, what's the name of shop?"

"That's the thing I sort of forgot. You know us elderly turn up to be a little forgetful."

"Well maybe if you can describe it maybe Chad could help you. He knows almost every coffee shop by the plaza. He lives right by it. Chad, come over here!" He signals the second guard to come over here.

Chad makes his way over. "Yeah what's up?" replied Chad.

"He wants to know where a certain coffee shop is. Old Man, describe it to him."

"Well... it's a shop...that sells coffee...and uh...that's all I got."

The two guards look at each other. They both start laughing.

"I think it's best for you to head home. Chad escort this old man home. I don't know how he got inside here, but that was a great laugh for the night." Said the first guard.

Oh, no, no, no, Lem thought to himself. "Oh, Sonny I can't go home without my coffee. If I can't get it I'll get real crank-"

"No, it's already way past civilian curfew tonight. Go home you'll get your coffee in the morning."

"But... but..."

"No buts! Chad take him home," said the first guard.

"Wait, why do I got to take this man home!?" said Chad.

"Because, I don't like you. Just do it man!"

"You know what? You're an ass."

Lem started to notice how dire this situation had become. He had to think of something fast or the mission would be sabotaged. He was out of ideas, until suddenly, in one act of desperation, Lem grabs the flashlight out of Chad's hand and the hat that he had on and pushes him. Throws the flashlight at the other guard and hits him in the face. Then takes off running the other direction.

"Whelp time to evade!" Lem yells and takes off.

"What the heck! Hey come back here!" Chad said. Him and the guard runs after Lem. Lem runs outside the gate, and notices the guards are still after him, leaving the entrance of the school unguarded.

Angel had to know that was the signal, he thought. He couldn't see where she was but he had a feeling she knew. She's a smart kid, she'll figure it out.

Scanning from left to right, Lem was trying to locate her. He finally sees her from the corner of his eye. She cleverly drops down from the building behind them, and sprints to the entrance undetected.

As the guards were all focused on helping him up, Lem notices that Nyla cracks the code and opens the door and shuts it behind her.

It's all up to you now Angel. Don't get caught, Lem thought.
