“Pass me a mask,” I said rationally, hyperventilating at the same time, rather stupid of me because of the mask now hanging off my chin.

“This is all my fault,” Steve muttered. “I should have watched more carefully. I knew this would happen. This one—” (he meant me and elbowed me one in the ribs) “—just has to save everybody and help everyone and animals and stay too long to get just one more thing, and I knew I’d have to save his ass again. Remember when I beat you in the sixth grade spelling bee because you just had to think one more minute, and you lost because you went overtime? Yeah, I knew you’d have to have just that one more minute too long! Shit!” The last word was because we hit a rock and jounced.
