16 Chapter 16

She pushed me toward a paddle board and said, “Get on it, stupid, before the cops bill you for the tree.”

I’d never been on a paddle board in my life and hadn’t really wanted to start either. “Oh, I think they’ll know who crashed the helicopter,” I stammered, almost more scared now than when I’d crashed. It had all been so fast.

“I’d never seen old Doobie Doug so upset in my life.” She laughed. “That old homeless guy, he’s gonna find a new place to crash now. Are you all right?”

“I have no fucking idea,” I said as the ocean took over the job of wetting the rest of my clothes.

“Hey, I know you,” she said. “I’ve seen you at the Pride Brunch at Gizmo’s. You go there with that hot guy, Steve, right? You’re a couple, right?”

“Ah, no,” I answered, trying to place her.

“I’ve seen the way he looks at you. You’re an idiot if you don’t grab him and marry him.”
