56 Chapter 55: I’m The Main Character

"Welcome, Your Honor." Rows of attendants line up near the entrance to greet their esteemed guest.

Cold eyes swept across the faces of every figure within her sights. Nodding briefly to the one in charge, Chu Nuan entered the building. " To the lowest level."

The musky smell of aged books rushed into her nose the moment her foot stride into the archives. Row of redwood shelves stood side by side and created an illusion of a never ending hall of knowledge. From the first floor all the way to the lowest floor level, records dating as early as when Pangu created the universe. Continuing onto the daily activities of each deity and every life forms are printed here in detail.

The highest floor is where the newest set of entries are stored while the lower level contains documents of olden times.

Walking among the row and rows of chronicles a special ambiance specific to a library envelopes the large hall. Shuffling footsteps and frequent turning of pages can be heard occasionally from different corners of the floor. Intermittent murmurs of discussion became scarce the deeper she went.

Arriving to the lowest level a grand double door obstructs her way. Sensing the oncoming presence nearing the entrance, two stone statues in the shape of a snake began to move.

"Halt!"

Stone eyes glow a deep red as the snakes shed off the grey color of stone and revived to a black mesmerizing luster. Glittering scales overlap and move to wrap around the two pillars established before the doors.

Looking down from the highest point of the hall, the two enormous stone snakes flick their tongue out at Chu Nuan. "Who comes?"

"Palace Master of 19th Hell, Chu Nuan." Taking out a black tablet, she raised it high above her head.

One of the snakes lowered its body to scrutinize the identification tablet. Sensing the flow of energy inside and confirming its authenticity. The two guardians lowered their bodies until it touched the ground. Giving a bow of deep respect, "Welcome Your Honor to our humble dwelling."

Afterwards, the double doors creaked open and left a space wide enough for two people to pass through. Closing behind Chu Nuan, the guardians curled around the pillars near the entrance and fossilized once again.

The lowest floor of the archives has another name called The Forbidden Chamber. This room unlike other floors contain detailed information on deities and events that cannot be found elsewhere. Sometimes, there are historical circumstances that could shake the foundation or beliefs of the three worlds. Therefore, documents that are considered dangerous are stored here and can only be accessed by few.

For example, the one she has in her hand right now.

A semi-transparent barrier circles around the ink colored scroll which occasionally spark with electricity. Warning others not to act recklessly near the precious documents or else an explosion might occur.

Turning the scroll over, its title clearly displays itself before her eyes. "The Third Prince of the Dragon Tribe"

How long has it been? She couldn't remember too clearly, but it would have been better to forget everything that has happened. Or so she tried, the bitterness from that day still fastened in the corners of her heart.

As she continued to reminisce about the past, a deep voice that contained amusement rang out behind her. Standing with her back away from the chairs and tables provided for reading, Chu Nuan did not even need to turn around to know whose voice that was.

Who could it be but Duanxian Yu's?

Staring ahead emotionlessly for a moment in silence, Chu Nuan's lips split into an arrogant grin as she turned to face the figure behind. "Oh? If it isn't our infamous commander. I thought you'd died aeons ago when the demon army was defeated. Who knew I would be fortunate enough to see you here." Voice laced with sarcasm, each word that came out of her mouth seemed as sharp as a knife.

Chuckling to himself, Duanxian Yu clasped his two hands on his legs. "I'm just here to see an old friend. Are you still angry at me?" Purple eyes narrow playfully as they direct themselves at Chu Nuan.

Suddenly, the sound of something quickly flew past his ears and embedded itself on the wall a few yards from him. The handle of a dagger still trembles from the force of the throw.

"Angry? I'm not angry." Chu Nuan smiles warmly as she approaches the seat next to him. "It's just that for some odd reason, my chest hurts whenever I look at you. Do you know why?" Her grin bloomed beautifully but failed to reach her eyes.

"Could this be love?" Duanxian Yu tilted his head innocently in suggestion. Expression seemingly inviting Chu Nuan to give him a beating.

Twitching the corner of her lips uncontrollably, Chu Nuan let her body fall back onto the chair. Slanting her eyes at the man smiling with a sly glint to his gaze, Chu Nuan moved her sight away wordlessly. "You met up with Fu Xi." It wasn't a question.

Pausing at her words, Duanxian Yu nodded briefly as his features softened at the thought of his little daoist. "We met some time ago."

"I see…" Those were the only words she managed to think of. Pondering for a second, she decided to ask the questions she had answers to, but still wanted confirmation on.

"The Bridge of Forgetfulness."

"I did it."

"Escaped ghosts and the black gate."

"I order it."

"The summoning circle."

"I made them."

"Fu Xi."

"I did him."

"Stabbing me in the chest."

This question caused Duanxian Yu to hesitate for a moment. "I only wanted to scare you for a bit. Who would've thought that you would be so excited and rush straight into my blade. You can't blame me"

"So it's my fault?" Veins throbbed painfully on Chu Nuan's forehead as she clenched her jaws. Taking a deep breath, her emotions calmed enough to continue the conversation. "Why did you help the three ghost lords escape?"

Crossing his legs to a more comfortable position, Duanxian Yu started to explain. "I needed a reason for you to move."

"Oh?"

"I know, even though you tried to hide him from me. I still found him in this life." A dangerous glint flashed past his eyes as he changed the direction of the topic.

Sighing quietly, Chu Nuan mumbled in a low voice, "I wasn't trying to hide him from you, just didn't want you two to meet so early. At the very least, not when he's still in his unawaken state."

"Actually, his awakening started a long time ago."

"Huh?!" Startled, Chu Nuan widened her eyes at the man sitting across from her. "How can that be? I haven't sensed any changes in him." Considering for a moment, her brows twitched as a possible thought surface. "You're suppressing his awakening? Why?"

"How can I let the main lead take the stage when it hasn't been set." His tone came out light and careless.

"Stage? Releasing so many ghosts and causing the death of innocents is only for the sake of your so-called stage?" The more Chu Nuan spoke, the angrier she became.

"And that blood circle, you know what will happen if it's completed?! You know that opening a portal to the demon world is forbidden!" Grasping Duanxian Yu's collar with a rough pull, her severe gaze collided with his indifferent look.

A chuckle escaped from his grinning lips, narrowing his eyes seductively, chilling words entered her ears. "So?" Raising his head to meet her gaze head on, his eyes reveal a layer of radical passion. "What do the lives of a few humans matter to me? There is only one person I truly care for and in order for me to fulfill his wish.." Slender fingers grip at Chu Nuan's wrist as pressure gradually causes her hands to tremble in pain. "I will do whatever it takes."

"....What are you planning?" Flinging her hold on him, she took a seat once again while avoiding his sight.

"I want to start a war between demons and deities once again."

".....you've gone crazy." Chu Nuan's cold gaze narrowed at his remark.

Instead of being offended, Duanxian Yu smiled widely, "I've been crazy from the start. Of course, the scale will be smaller than the one in the past. Probably just between the remnants of the demon army and soldiers from Hell." Giving her a pointed look, "mainly between you and me."

Crossing her arms and leaning back on the chair, her indolent gaze aims at the ceiling overhead. "What makes you think I'll help?"

"Because you're my friend, aren't you? Don't worry, the remnants of the army are weaker compared to the past. You'll have no trouble restraining them."

"That's not the point." Impatience slowly crawled its way into her already displeased expression. "What I want to know is your ultimate goal, if you just wanted a fight, you wouldn't have made such a detailed plan then spill everything to me. If you just wanted to be with Fu Xi, you wouldn't have suppressed his awakening and lied about the changes in his body. What does this mean? It means that you have no plans to be with Fu Xi nor support the demon army."

Running her hands over her bangs, an exasperated sigh filled the room. "You're aiming for something else."

Instantly, the sound of clapping sounded across the room. "As expected of my dear friend, you know me so well." Receiving another glare his way, he can only shrug his shoulders and continue his thoughts. "My goal is very simple. I only want to change the ending of the incident thousands of years ago."

"Thousand years ago….you don't mean?!"

"That's correct." Duanxian Yu smiled mysteriously, "what happened before wasn't what I intended. That's why, I'll just recreate the scenario again and this time, he'll have the ending he wants." A trace of sadness flashing past his eyes went unnoticed by Chu Nuan.

"Phff." A snicker came out of Chu Nuan's mouth, "you sure that's what he wants?"

"What do you mean?"

"Are you sure that is what he wants and not what you want?" She smirks with contempt at his innocent thoughts.

"I don't understand, how is what I'm doing different from you?" Duanxian Yu asked with confusion.

"Of course it's different! I'm raising Xie Luochen with love and patience, never have I once done something he didn't like. His opinions matter to me. But what about you? Can you say with confidence that you have never done anything Fu Xi disliked before?"

Duanxian Yu became silent.

"See." Chu Nuan laughed louder, "but seeing how you are so pitiful, I'll help you this one time." Standing up from her seat, she threw a black object at him, "but remember this," her eyes blaze with confidence as her lips pull into an arrogant grin. "The main character of this story is me."
