“You said ‘they.’ Does that mean we’re not human?”

“I…it…we…” He looked distressed, and he swore under his breath. “The Plague continued to come along periodically, so folklore about vampyres never died out. Instead the tales were passed down from one generation to another.”

“Oh, I get it.” No, I didn’t get it, but how could I tell him that? It was obvious he wasn’t going to explain—or maybe he wasn’t able to. “Gee, Dad, that’s kind of interesting and all, but what does it have to do with me?”
