129 Chapter 129 — A Relative Comes Calling (2)

"Yes, yes I did. That brat had become quite smooth tongued. He just kept throwing words back at me, and—"

"Did you tell him about his mother?"

"Yes, but he said she was no longer his mother. That ungrateful brat! Despite what she—"

"Just shut up!" Gao Tinghua roared.

Wu Caiyu shut up instantly.

"Go and lie low for now. I'll contact you if there's anything else."

"Okay sir. But how about the balance you said you will give me after the job?"

"After failing so miserably, you still have the nerve to ask me for money? Just go and lie low for now, don't annoy me. Else, your son will be arrested for drug trafficking tonight."

"Yes, yes sir." Wu Caiyu paled. Her son was her life. She could not play with his wellbeing at all.

Gao Tinghua cut the call in anger. He stood up and faced the window, hands in his pockets.

His initial plan was to make him do something stupid, just to put him in a bit of trouble, or at least to shake him up a bit. But things did not go as planned.

"Chairman Li. You think you're really invincible right?" He said, speaking aloud.

Since plan A failed, it was time to move on to plan B.

He went to his desk and took up the report on Li Chuanmo his men investigated.

His finger rested on a line.

Spouse: Xie Weiwan (divorced)

"Xie Weiwan, is it? Let's see....."

Creativity was a thing of the mind, something the president of LY understood very deeply. It was not based on a routine work schedule or perfect clocking in times.

As such, the star of their company, Xu Kexin, had the freedom to work from anywhere in the world, as long as she submitted her drafts on time and did a good job.

She didn't have any pressing matters at the company, so she was working from home today. She sketched a design for a client's study in total silence.

She had just started to transfer the sketch into her computer, from where she would fill in the colors, when someone knocked on her door.

Annoyance at being interrupted bubbled up. This was why she stopped working from home recently. It was already the third time he had come looking for her today. What was it this time? "Come in."

Du Zimo opened the door and stood at the doorway. "Are you very busy?"

"Yes. But what is it?"

"I could come back later."

"It's fine. Do you need something?"

"No. I wanted to give you this." He said, holding out a file to her. She took it and while she looked through, Du Zimo spoke.

"I investigated that woman. Her name is indeed Lin Li, and she's my former secretary's cousin. Apparently, her cousin used to tell her a lot about me, and she decided she wanted me.

"She claimed to have met me in a club, but you know I don't go to clubs. I seriously didn't know her before you showed her picture to me some months ago. Those pictures were fake by the way, they were photoshopped."

Xu Kexin looked at him suspiciously, "You remember that you don't go to clubs? And that I showed you her picture? Are your memories returning?"

Du Zimo bit his lips, blaming himself for saying too much. "Yes, I remembered a few things after reading the report, but not much. You told me about showing me her picture, remember?"

"Oh." She said, then asked, "But how did the pregnancy come about? Won't it have been obvious that it's fake? And how did she think she could pull this off with someone she had never even met?"

"Who knows the inner workings of a lunatic's mind? I've already sued her though. She would be meeting my lawyers soon."

Xu Kexin said nothing, still looking through the file in her hand. "But why didn't you do this earlier? If not for your accident, our engagement would have been annulled by now."

"I was really very stupid at that time. I thought — I mean I'm not sure what I was thinking, but maybe I thought it was not important at all and that it would die down. Also, maybe I was sad that you didn't believe me."

Xu Kexin sighed, "How was I supposed to believe you when you weren't telling me anything? Just saying you didn't know her was obviously not enough.

"I know we were just in a business deal, but I expected transparency and fidelity. I was not planning on having to chase your mistresses after marriage. At the very least, even if you were not planning to be faithful, I thought you would be discreet."

"Wait. You thought we were in a business deal?" Du Zimo asked incredulously.

Xu Kexin: "..."

Wasn't his focus a bit off? "Weren't we?" Xu Kexin asked, slightly confused.

For once, Du Zimo was not lying when he said, "I don't remember that." He truly didn't remember ever telling her that it was going to be just business between them.

"But I thought we both agreed to this arranged marriage for that reason, just to please our parents, and also because we seemed suitable for each other."

Looking at his puzzled face, she became more bewildered. "It definitely wasn't for love anyway." She finished.

"Really? This is very strange. If that's true, then why do I feel like I love you with all my heart, Xinxin?"

Xu Kexin choked on air.

It was more due to shock than any other thing. Did the word "love" really just come out of his mouth?

After half a day, she finally managed to say, "I really don't know about that. But we definitely never spoke of love, ever."

"And that's all my fault. I'm such an idiot!" Du Zimo muttered under his breath. It wasn't so difficult to say the words "I love you.". Why didn't he tell her all these while?

"What did you say?" She asked because she couldn't hear him properly.

"Nothing." Then he moved even closer, while Xu Kexin tried to move her chair back slightly. She stared blankly when he knelt down.

"Xinxin, let's start over. I want us to date for real, to marry for love, not like business partners, but like two people who met and fell in love. Please?"
