This is the story of a girl in the Midwest and something terrible will happen, and she might be able to stop it.

February 17th,1904. It's a cloudy and gloomy day, and I have to do chores, but I didn't do it correctly, so I got 5 licks with a stick. I began crying, so Mama said, "You're a young lady, act like it." I was still crying, so I got two extra hits. I ran into the forest, but Papa caught up to me and dragged me back home.

February 17th, 1904. I woke up early this morning and cooked breakfast for Papa and Richard. Mama's isn't here because she's at the hospital in Kansas city, so she is going to be gone for a while. I will miss her. When Papa came down for breakfast, he looked sad. I asked him what was wrong, and he said nothing. When he went to work and took Richard to school, before he left I asked if I could go to school too, but he said girls stay home and clean while boys go to school and get jobs. Then, he slapped me in the face.

February 20th, 1904. Mama came back from the hospital. I was happy. Richard went to school, and dad went to work. Mama home schooled me like she did every day, and I learned a new word, sunflower. It's a type of flower. I love sunflowers.

February 30 ,1904 . Mama sewed me a dress with sunflowers on it. I love it, and it's blue, Although my favorite color is pink, it is blue. Mama had a man come over, and they went to the master bedroom for around an hour.
