DOCTOR OF THE YEAR

Massachusetts Institute of Technology - is not only the top university in the US, but it has also now been ranked first in the world for four years in a row. It has produced many notable and successful alumni and is not only known for its courses in the technology-related fields of physical sciences and engineering but in recent times also for its biology, economics, linguistics, and management courses.

There's an event made by "The Doctorscope Association" that being held here every year. It also has the most anticipated awarding ceremony "Doctor of the year", where the best doctors in the world are there and nominated for this award.

"Hello Dr. Martin, glad we meet again."

"Oh hey, Dr. Paul. How are you? How's your wife?"

"She's good. She's managing our new restaurant in New York. You can go there and avail your free lunch, every day. *laughs*"

"Sure, I'll do what you say."

"By the way, thanks for saving her life."

Louise operated on Dr. Paul's wife who has "Ventricular Septal Defect", a hole in the heart, a common heart defect that's present at birth (congenital). The hole (defect) occurs in the wall (septum) that separates the heart's lower chambers (ventricles) and allows blood to pass from the left to the right side of the heart.

Usually considered non-life-threatening, usually closing spontaneously or causing symptoms of congestive heart failure, which can be surgically treated in time to save the patient's life.

"It's my pleasure, Dr. Paul"

Louise Martin, also known as Dr. Martin, she's a Cardiologists (expert on the heart and blood vessels. You might see them for heart failure, a heart attack, high blood pressure, or an irregular heartbeat.) and Gastroenterologists (specialists in digestive organs, including the stomach, bowels, pancreas, liver, and gallbladder...)

She's one of the most famous Cardiologists in the world, as she's the very first doctor who made a successful surgery on a baby who has Hypoplastic left heart syndrome, (newborn infants with this condition are generally born at full term and initially appear healthy. As the arterial duct closes, systemic perfusion decreases, resulting in hypoxemia, acidosis, and cardiogenic shock. Usually, no heart murmur (or a non-specific heart murmur) is detected. The second heart sound is loud and single because of aortic atresia. Often the liver is enlarged secondary to congestive heart failure.

Louise is now working at Newlife International Hospital (NIH), but the thing is, it is known as the worst hospital in the U.S, but she changed that perspective to us she became one of the best doctors in the world. Many people doubt but, this is the way she wants to deal with. Working there wasn't pretty easy as everyone imagined. All eyes on her, waiting for her to make a sudden mistake. She accepts the challenges. Her rival Co-Doctor, Dr. Harold became his biggest enemy, as she misplaced him on being the best doctor in that hospital. Dr. Harold was also invited to this event, also nominated for the award.

And there he goes...

"Dr. Martin... How are you supposed to be here?"

Dr. Harold was also one of the best Cardiologists in NIH, in fact, he made so many successful heart surgery. he's the only grandson of the former CEO of NIH who passed away years ago. He has a bad personality, self-centered. He felt unbeatable in everything. He does everything in his power to be known and of course own their Hospital, which is now handled by his father.

"Yeah, I also asked the same question, Dr. Harold. I don't want to be here actually but, I don't have a freaking choice. They also nominated me so, whether you like it or not, bare my existence. Good luck! *Smiled*"

Louise walked away and entered the event place.

She's getting a lot of attention but she wasn't ready for more.

"The genius doctor in the World, Dr. Louise Martin! How are you?"

That's Dr. Mark, he owns a Hospital and known as the best Neurologist in San Diego.

"I'm doing good Dr. Mark. You told me about your plan in San Diego Hospital, have you already built a special care unit for the elderly? Have you found a Geriatric Medicine Specialists? I can recommend some doctors for you."

"Oh yeah, you literally remember everything huh? Yup. Actually, we're starting up soon, and i'll appreciate it if you recommend me some doctors."

"Okay, I'll make a call to you tomorrow. Hope we can catch up again after this soon."

Another doctor came in.

"Visit my hospital to Dr. Martin!" - Dr. Keith

"Hey, Dr. Keith! How's your baby girl? Katherine right?"

"Yeah, she's with her dad right now. She's crawling already!"

"Oh come on, really? Well, I'm planning to give her a gift on her birthday, send me your address on my email. Okay?"

"Thank you, Dr. Martin! And also, we are rooting you for the "Doctor of The Year" award!"

"No way."

"Why? There's no other doctor who deserves that award except you. After you successfully operated on a baby with Hypoplastic left heart syndrome, you became famous and well, you're the most genius doctor we know."

"Yes but, there may be some doctors works harder than me. I mean, look at Dr. Jerry, he is known as a doctor who operates some patients for free. Not being humble but, don't wanna make my hopes high *laughs*"

"But for me, you're the world's best doctor. You cannot change my mind"

"Silly. *laughs*"

Then the ceremony started.

"Good evening doctors, representatives, and hospital heads! We are gathered here tonight for our annual celebration of "The Doctorscope". Representing our hospitals and associations. We would like to thank our sponsors, and of course the one and the only person who make this possible, the founder of this event, Dr. Jake Smith!" - Host

The stadium overflows with applause and standing ovations.

The stadium was full of known doctors in the world, attending this kind of event is their chance to communicate with their co-doctor and also to get the opportunity to be transferred to another hospital.

Louise declined several proposals for her to transfer to other hospitals. She wants to stay in NIH. That's what makes her more unique as a doctor, to just be a low-profiled person regardless of what ability she had.

Everyone is nervous, it is not just a simple event or a party. They are all nominated for the award. When a doctor was given this award, it's their chance to be a cover on TIME MAGAZINE, also they will be given a condo unit in San Fransisco worth 25 Million Dollars.

---------------------------------------------------

The long wait is over. After so many special numbers & speeches, the program for the most awaited event will happen. The announcement "Doctor of the year" award.

Some doctors are nervous not because of the award, but for their ambush speech if ever they'll be the one to receive it.

"Now is the time to give the most prestigious award for the doctor who's done amazingly in their field, in general. The winner of this award was chosen and voted by the heads, merger, and staff of "The Doctorscope Association." With this trophy, a certificate sealed and signatures by Dr. Jake Smith, the CEO of this association, and a title of a condo unit in San Francisco worth 25 million dollars, will be given to the winner..."

The doctors hyped from what they've heard.

"Given this award on the 4th of July, 2018. This award goes to..."

A moment of silence.

"Congratulations, Dr. Louise Martin of Newlife International Hospital!"

Louise was surprised. She can't even move her feet to walk on the stage and receive the award. Unbelievable she thought.

"What are you doing Dr. Martin? Go and receive your award!!" - Dr. Keith

Dr. Keith who is excited but not surprised for she expected this already for Louise, pushing her to get the award.

Still, Louise's reaction was priceless. Dr. Paul comes over to escort her to the stage. She's shaking because of nervousness and overwhelmed feeling. Her mannerism started, touching her neck and biting her lips.

As soon she reached the stage, the host gave the trophy to her and greeted congratulations. She tapped the microphone, checking if it was working.

*Tapped the microphone*

"Uhm Hi? Doctors! I'm not used to too much attention but I think I must be now."

The crowd burst into a laugh. Louise trying to calm herself for this is the thing she didn't imagine to be. Deep breath, inhale, exhale.

"For those people who don't know me yet. I'm Dr. Louise Martin. Cardiologists and Gastroenterologists at Newlife International Hospital. People might think that i'm too young being a doctor at the age of 26, well that's how it works *laugh*, I finished my medicine course at Harvard University in just 4 years, i'm accelerated because I have this kind of ability called Eidetic Memory of famously known as Photographic Memory."

People start murmuring.

"Yeah it sounds crazy but it's true. Some of you know about it when I once operated on an infant who has Hypoplastic left heart syndrome, a very rare heart disease. But it became the first successful surgery in that case. They keep on asking "How the fuck did you do that?", well surprisingly... I already read a thousand of pages of medical and surgical books and be able to know the worst-case scenarios of each surgery. I used my oh-so-called superpower to memorize all kinds of heart surgery."

Dr. Harold walked out because of insecurities and jealousy. He thinks

I should be the one in her place.

TV reporters are getting ready for their script for the interview, media are getting their perfect angle and shots of Louise.

"I am not saying this to be like "oh hey I'm genius, I know everything", because behind that beautiful dream is the worst nightmare... I went to an accident 6 years ago, resulting in me losing all my memories since the day I was a kid to the day of the accident. It was hard for me to move on, it wasn't easy to just walk and continue how my life must go on, but now... I'm here, standing in front of you letting you know that I become stronger enough to fight and win the battle."

Doctors are so proud of her, looking at her like she's one of a kind.

"I believe every one of us has a unique power in this field. Winning this award doesn't mean that I'm great. This award belongs to all of us, who strive for success, who tried their best to win every surgery and medical problems of their patients. This is not only for me but for all of us. Thank you Dr. Jake Smith for making this possible. I believe we all won this award. Thank you and let's continue the battle in Hospital!"

Applause and standing ovations filled the place. Louise earns so much respect from the other doctors.

She received so much attention, taking photos of her and of course some interviewers asking her questions.

"So Dr. Martin, how does it feel to won that award?"

"It feels so fucking amazing! I mean, finally, I achieved something great in my life."

"You're from NIH, known as one of the worst hospitals in the U.S but, do you ever think to transfer to a better hospital? Like at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, or Massachusetts General Hospital here in Boston?"

"No. I'm going to stay in NIH no matter what."

"Do you already have a husband? Boyfriend?"

Louise laughed at that question, certainly like I wish I have.

"I don't have a love life for now, well maybe soon. Who knows."

A bunch of guards came to her side and a staff whispered to her

"You have to limit your answers, TIME MAGAZINE editors and interviewers will need all of that for their next month's issue. Sorry, but we need to do this."

"Yeah sure, I understand."

Louise answered and nodded. The guards blocked the interviewers' way. They lead her backstage to rest for a while.

But there's Dr. Harold, eaten by insecurity.

"Hey Dr. Martin, you're getting too much attention huh? do I need to congratulate you on getting that effing award?"

"Hmmm, no need Dr. Harold. I see the "Hey congratulations bitch and thanks for taking the award with the name of our hospital" already in your face. No need to say out loud."

"Do you think you really deserve that award?"

"No... did you?"

"Let's just say you're smart but..."

"Oh thank you"

"I'm not finished yet. Yes, you're smart but, do you think it's really fair for us having just a normal brain? Well, I think you have to give back that award. You don't deserve it."

"So, you deserve it? Okay well..."

Louise gave the trophy to him and smiled.

"Here. Take care of that okay?. By the way, my name was already imprinted there, handle it with care."

Dr. Harold was speechless and looking to Louise poker-faced.

"Ooops. Wait. Sorry, I think the title of the condo unit was already in my name, let me talk to the staffs to just give it to you, as my donation. *wink*"

And she walked away and leave Dr. Harold froze.

She's now on her way to go out on that place when someone catches her attention. Waving at her with a bouquet of flowers and a box of gifts.

"This man never fails to surprise me."
