Chapter 6

Wren quietly walked up to her room after dinner, her body trembled slightly, and her neck still ached. Still, in her dinner dress, she flopped down in bed, surprised to feel a lump next to her and feeling some heat. Curiously, she lifted up the covers and found the charming face of Evan staring up at her.

"Surprise!" He said cheerily, beaming up at her, "your bed so so comfy," he smirked, enjoying her surprised face.

"How did you get up here?" Wren asked confusedly, her voice was scratchy and sore, "how did you find the right room?"

"I watched you climb in here," Evan said happily, "what's wrong with your voice? Are you sick? I didn't know your kind could get sick," he asked worriedly.

Wren frowned, looking away from him. She was ashamed of what happened, "we can't get sick," she said, looking down at her hands as she tried to hold back her emotions.

Evan frowned, sitting up and looking at her with concern, "what's wrong?" He asked, beginning to inspect her, his eyes turning dark when he saw the dark bruise of a handprint on her wrist. Then he noticed the dark spots of her neck, gently using her sheets he began to wipe the make up away, exposing the disturbing dark blue bruise of a handprint on her neck. "Who did that," he asked lowly, his eyes going dark.

"Don't.. don't worry about it, Evan," Wren sighed softly, moving away slightly from his touch.

Evan frowned, wrapping an arm around her waist and drawing her close, "please, tell me," he said softly, sounding sad as he gently kissed along the bruise and hiding his face against her neck.

"It was Andrew, my future husband," Wren sighed softly, feeling no pain from his kisses but instead, comforted by it.

Evan growled softly against her neck, causing her to flinch slightly, "I won't hurt you," he said, pulling back to gaze down at her face, "I want to kill the man who hurt you" he said, hugging her tightly to his chest.

Wren didn't understand the man, she didn't know how he could grow to care for her like this in such a short time. Before she knew it, tears had begun to stream slowly down her face. Wren hugged onto Evan tighter as she cried softly, she felt his soft hand rubbing her back soothingly.

"Shh, it's ok. You're safe," Evan murmured in her ear as she cried softly, feeling so weak. "Don't cry, Wren?" he said, trying to calm her down.

After about five minutes of silently crying, Wren had calmed down enough to stop, "I'm sorry," she murmured softly, feeling guilty.

"Don't be sorry, I'm sure you were scared. It's alright," Evan smiled, still rubbing her back sweetly, "do you still want to go out? Or I can stay here with you," he offered, sensing some fear in her.

"I.. I don't know. Can you stay?" She asked, still hugging him tightly. He nodded and kissed the top of her head.

"Why don't you go change?" Evan said, fixing the blankets as she nodded.

Wren sadly let him go, missing his warmth as soon as she did, and went to her dresser. After she grabbed a change of clothes, she went into the bathroom and changed. On her way back to bed, Wren made a point to lock the door, she didn't want Evan to get in trouble. She sniffled as she climbed back into bed. Evan tucked her in and held her firmly, feeling her arms wrap around his. He smiled and kissed her head, gently petting her hair.

"I wish I could protect you or take you away," Evan murmured with a soft sigh. Wren nodded against his chest sadly. "Did you tell your parents?" He asked, gently stroking her back.

"No, I don't think they would care much," Wren sighed, hugging the man tightly. The warmth of his body and his concerned but sweet words made her feel safe.

"Why wouldn't they care?" Evan asked confusedly, he pulled back to look at her.

Wren stayed quiet, keeping her eyes downcast. She head Evan sigh softly then felt his soft, warm hand gently lifted her chin, so she was looking at him. He studied her eyes for a moment, she wasn't really sure what he was looking for or what Evan saw, but after looking away, he dropped it.

"You have eight siblings, right?" Wren asked curiously, "Will you tell me about them?" She asked.

Evan nodded, "I only have six siblings left. Werewolves have multiple kids per pregnancy. My mom had three boys for her first pregnancy, two boys and one girl for the second, and three girls for the third," he explained, "my two brothers and I use to get in a lot of trouble. They were killed by vampires when we were teens.." he sighed softly, hugging her close. "My other siblings have been better; my mother keeps a close eye on them."

Wren nodded, snuggling him happily, "what about your father?" She asked, hoping not to upset him, but she was curious.

Evan frowned, looking at her nervously, "he disappeared when I was 17, most of us think the vampires did it. As the eldest, I took his spot as our king." He said sheepishly.

Wren looked at him, confused, processing this for a few moments, "why didn't you tell me last night?" She huffed.

Evan chuckled and gently kissed her pale nose, "seemed like bad timing, sorry."

"Wait.. doesn't that mean you're a pureblood?" She said confusedly, "and on that note, why did you ask me out? Don't you have plenty of werewolf suitors?"

"We call it purebred, like dogs," Evan huffed softly, he didn't seem to like that. She figured it was probably something her kind did to piss them off, "I've never really been interested in those women. I wanted to find a mate on my own"

Wren nodded, still thoroughly confused, "I see.." she hummed softly; she supposed it all made sense.

Evan smiled and held her firmly, he noticed her enjoyment of the warmth he gave off. "You look tired, you should rest," he said, gently playing with her hair.

Wren nodded, laying her head on his chest and hugging his side, and he wrapped his arm around her.

"Sweet dreams," Evan smiled and kissed her forehead. Soon she had drifted off.
