19 Chapter 19

Now I had a little problem: there was almost no cover next to the walkers, as they were right in the middle of the intersection at the time. I needed to tread more carefully. I approached them as far as the covers would allow me, before taking a few seconds to think about it. Eventually, I didn't see any obvious solutions, and decided to use the traditional approach: attract them by sound, so I clapped, just enough to attract the closest one.

What I did not expect, however, was for all of them to turn my way and start marching forward.

'Fuck me sideways!' I cursed. I was panicking, I'm not gonna lie. With bigger number, things are more prone to go wrong. And with a group as inexperienced as ours, I didn't think we could pull it off. I pulled one of the empty bottles I brought with me, and threw it to the other side of the intersection. I was lucky, because two of the walkers separated from the group, attracted by the sound. But that still left seven.

'Still better than 9.' I thought. I dragged them slowly towards the destination. I didn't want to risk attracting the others two we left behind, so I didn't risk another distraction. I gestured to my team the number, before taking my position.

"Andrea, Amy, Jacqui, remember, when I give you the signal, two of you will take the one on the right, the other will take the one on the left. When you take a swing at it, do not keep holding the handle of the weapon if you miss, alright? I repeat, let go of the handle if you miss your shot." They nodded. It was something I've spoke to them about before, but I needed them to remember, people tend to forget everything when they panic. The reason why I told them to let go, is so that the zombie doesn't get a hold of them, because that would be game over for them.

The same scene happened again, Jim, Glenn and Theodore eliminated the last two, but this time, something else happened. Two of the walkers turned towards them, making them fall back to stabilize themselves. The axes get held inside the head of the victim, it takes some effort to take it back.

"Pull them to the sides and take your shots." I ordered, once I saw they them take the bait, I charged forward at mine. Empowering my strike, I pierced his skull, before stabilizing myself. I knew the men could handle themselves to some degree, but the other two have me really worried. And sure enough, Jacqui was running away, her axe lodged in the walker's shoulder, while the sisters' target was on the ground, trying to get up.

I ran towards Jacqui's first, her having understood the situation baiting him towards her, while I disposed of him easily enough. It was the last one they had to deal with, as the others had apparently finished with their targets.

"Well, that was easy." I commented nonchalantly. The key to a good leader is to act cool when necessary, something I was OBVIOUSLY succeeding in. They just looked at me, too tired to argue. I was panting myself, but I didn't spend much stamina. I was sitting at 70/200, which was really not bad.

Now, we needed to deal with the last two walkers, and I needed to kill at least one of them to level up. We rested for five minutes to catch our breath, before I told them: "Let's get this over with. There is only two left, right next to the pharmacy. Jim and I will take one of them, Glenn and Theodore finish the other." They nodded, and we started walking, taking our time to reach the last geeks.
