20 Chapter 20

I caved. “Yes, it’d be a nice to see you. But I can’t stay long. If the hospital calls…”

“I understand.”

I waited outside the cozy café for ten minutes, until Liam arrived on foot, turning the corner and heading in the direction of the small eatery. I stepped out into the balmy afternoon, and waved across the street, joining him on the sidewalk. My heartbeat quickened when he held the door open for me and we entered the college hangout. Loud, lively voices from other hungry patrons filled the room.

“I’m glad you came,” he said, his voice dripping with charm.

I gazed into his eyes, returning the smile. “I wasn’t sure if I’d make it,” I said, sounding banal. Heat rose in my face. I wanted to turn around and leave, feeling foolish.

“Sit. Sit. What can I order for you?” he asked, pulling out my chair and sitting across from me.

“I don’t know.” I strained to read the menu of drinks on a dry erase board behind the counter and turned to him. “I can’t stay long. I’m sorry.”
