1 Chapter One

The wind blew and rattled the trees. Light rain battered the roof of an asylum. Inside one of the rooms, one could hear the laughs and giggles of a girl. A girl with light auburn hair and pale green eyes. Her name is Kenna Harlow.

Kenna threw her head back in laughter. Her long wavy hair swayed as she continued to laugh at the cartoon. She may be an adult, but she still found humor in kids shows.

"Oh look at that silly fox trying to get the bird! No matter how high you jump, little fox, you can't get the birdy!" she exclaimed while giggling.

As she laughed and made fun of the fox, someone had opened the door to her room. He was an older gentleman with caring eyes. He was referred to as Dr. Fowler.

"Kenna, it is time to go to sleep. Remember, it's an important day tomorrow," the doctor said gently.

"Oh yes. I know Dr. We are going into town tomorrow, correct?" she jumped up. "Oh, I can't wait! I guess going to sleep would be helpful for the sun to rise, but I can't! I'm too excited. What do I do?" she asked.

"Make up a story as you're laying down. Dream something amazing."

"Okay!" Kenna then proceeded to lay down in her bed. Fowler shook his head at the girl. He turned off her tv. Then the light. He looked back at her then walked out.

The next day, Kenna had woken up with much enthusiasm. She hadn't been to town since she was 14. Kenna loved to socialize. She found it strange why people didn't like to talk to others. They had called it "anxiety." She didn't understand the concept. Kenna enjoyed learning about others. Whenever someone would come for therapy, she followed them and tried to conversate, but the nurses usually told her off and the patients ignored her. Maybe she will make a new friend out in town?

"Kenna"- someone knocked- "can I come in?" It was Dr. Fowler. She recognized his voice. Kenna had a special ability to remember someone by their voice. She always thought that someone's voice was one of their most important features.

"You can come in, Dr. Don't hesitate to enter."

He opened the door all while saying, "but you're a girl, you need your privacy."

"Awe, it's okay Dr. I change very quickly! And besides, you are like a grandpa to me! I value your companionship," Kenna grinned.

"Even so, you are still a person. You need to have your alone time. No matter who the other person is. You need your space. It's respect. That is the key to making more friends since you are always trying to make them," Fowler gently responded.

  "But it's haaaard!" She pouted.

"It's okay. It takes time. You'll learn someday," Fowler reassured.

"You have been saying that for years, but how come I'm still this stupid girl? I don't understand why I'm so slow…" Kenna dropped her head, as a wave of sadness washed over her.

Dr. Fowler reached out towards her. He put his hand on her shoulder and smiled. "You're not slow. You just get distracted and forget what you're supposed to be doing. It will be better someday. Now, how about we get ready for town? It's nice out today."

"Oh yeah! I forgot about going to town! Yay!" Kenna jumped around in happiness, seemingly forgetting about her sadness.

Fowler chuckled at the girl. "Go to Miss Marleigh. She has some clothes for you."

"Okay!" Kenna ran out of the room and down the hall. She passed by one of the guards, startling him. She turned the corner and continued down until she found Marleigh's office. Kenna knocked a small tune, remembering that Fowler had said to give people space.

"Come in," a small, weak voice answered.

Kenna opened the door and bounced in. Marleigh looked at Kenna in surprise.

"Oh, Kenna. I didn't realize it was you. You don't usually knock, so I was expecting someone else to walk through the door," Marleigh said. She was a frail little old lady. Her hair was a snow white. Though, her brown eyes shined with love and liveliness.

"Yep! I'm trying to be a better person. Dr. said that it is important to knock on people's doors."

"Oh Kenna, you are such a sweet girl. Always trying to be a better person. Alright. Wasn't there a reason for you coming here, darling?" Marleigh asked the bouncy girl.

"Oh yes yes. I need proper clothes for town. Dr. said that you have some for me, correct?" Kenna looked curiously around.

Marleigh chuckled and walked around her desk. She lifted up a bag for Kenna. "Here you go, darling. These are clothes your brother left."

Kenna happily grabbed the bag and thanked Marleigh. She walked out and down to the bathroom to change. She was confused though. Her brother? Last time she checked, she didn't have a brother.

She looked in the bag to find her clothes. It was light denim overalls and a white t-shirt. She found some socks as well as red converse. It was simple. After changing, she went down to the first floor, where she met Fowler. He was dressed in a simple gray turtleneck and light gray dress pants. He smiled at her and asked if she was ready to go. Kenna nodded.

As they entered the black Cadillac, she couldn't contain a fit of giggles. Kenna was excited and nobody could miss it.

Once they got to town, Fowler asked where she wanted to go.

"Well, I heard the mall has a lot of things to do," Kenna suggested.

"The mall it is," Fowler nodded his head and drove in that direction.

Once they were there, Kenna instantly started to walk towards the food court. She smelled something very delicious and it excited her.

"Kenna, wait up." Fowler sped to catch up with the speedy girl. "Are you hungry? I forgot that you didn't have breakfast today. Sorry about that."

"Nope nope. It's fine. I want food that's not from the asylum. It isn't even that good!" Kenna walked faster towards the mall.

As she was focused on going to the doors of the building, she didn't see the people that were walking. That was until she ran straight into one of them. When she was rubbing her head, she saw a hand reach towards her and lift her up.

"Are you okay?" The gentle voice made her look up and the first thing she had noticed was his shining hazel eyes and military uniform.
