Divorce

Cedric paused but his eyes went colder. He had always been a man of respect and dignity. In his two long years of marriage, never once he had any scandal. He had always been with Eve when she wanted him. But now.

"Forget it, I will talk to you later." He spoke so coldly that Eve shivered. She knew she was in trouble. Cedric adjusted his shirt collar and then left the room. Elene closed the door behind her.

She looked at her sister with pity.

"Eve, you fool, why did you do that?" she shook her head and sighed. "If I have not sent him out of the room. He would have either killed you or divorced you." she whispered as if she was afraid that the devil would hear her if she spoke loudly.

"I didn't do it. I did not call for him. I was looking for Cedric." Eve pleaded. There was something wrong with the whole situation but she could not point it out because of her headache.

It feels like someone was hammering her. And her senses are dull. Elene told her that it was good that Cedric left. But she wanted to chase him. She wanted to hold him in her arms and tell him the truth. But her head… she did not have the courage to stand up, forget about running behind him.

"I never have a boyfriend, Elene. You knew Cedric was the first man. Why did you say that?" She shook her head and interrogated her sister. If only she could see her see her expression too.

"Why? I was just trying to brush off this topic. I wanted to tell him that it was not a big thing. You do not know since you are a naive sister. It is common for rich men to have a few lovers. They just know how to hide it well. Do you think Cedric did not have someone before you? Have you forgotten me completely?" Eve felt like a dagger pierced her skin. Yes, that was right. Cedric had a few lovers and her sister was one of them.

"But all this did not matter. You are his wife now and you have maintained yourself well." Eve felt the scorching heat on her body. And covered her most private part with her hands though Cedric had not taken off her undergarments.

"I will help you with your clothes. Then you shall sleep." Elene chuckled at her blushing sister and brought a dress for her. She helped Eve to wearing a simple black dress that would be more comfortable than party appropriate and closed the lights. But she did not leave.

She sat there and stared at Eve for a long time.

"Foolish sister, I have saved you. Cedric had already shown me divorce papers. If you were not docile enough, he would have given them to you a long time ago.

So do yourself a favor and do not earn his ire. Or he will throw you out of the house. But… would silence stop that?" she laughed coldly as she stood up and patted the cheeks of her sister. Her eyes filled with malice that shone in the dark room.

She left the room after that. The moment the door was closed, Eve sniffled. Elene might have thought that Eve was sleeping. But her pain was so much that she did not fall asleep. Only to know this! Her heart burnt.

So, he was really giving her a divorce. The papers in the study were for her. He was only waiting because she was too docile and he could not find fault in her. Tears kept falling from her eyes like a broken dam. She wanted to burn this room, burn her naivete, burn herself.

But then, she was the greedy one who was clinging to a silver hope. He had only loved his sister. The whole world knew that and so did she. The dresses, the jewels, the perfumes all belonged to her sister because it was her liking. For two long years, she wanted to tell Cedric that she did not like these kinds of revealing clothes. She did not like long heels or strong perfumes. She did not like jewels that stretched her neck.

She only smiles whenever he rolled her up like Elene and made love to her. Hoping that someday it would be her. But now... She did not want to live in dreams anymore. She had enough of them.

Her mind continued to wander from one dream to another as she relieved the two years of their marriage. And realized not even once Cedric had made love to her without dolling her up. Not even once had he called her name when they had sex while she screamed his name as if it was a chant to liberty.

Ha! She was a fool, an utter fool. She stirred when the door opened. Has it been so long? Has the party ended? She held her blankets tightly and did not move.

She heard another door opening and closing and then the sound of running water. After half an hour the door opened again and she felt a bit of rustling of clothes. She waited for him to lay beside her.

Perhaps he would ask what happened then and then she would explain slowly. She would ask him about divorce papers too. Then she would tell him that she did not like any of the things he had bought for her. She was going to speak all that even if he divorce her for she was not going to take so much burden on her chest. Once he would come to her. But….

"Cedric, are you done? The maids had prepared coffee for us." She heard the voice of her sister from the door and paused.

She heard footsteps and "oh, i did not know you are still changing. I… I will wait for you in the room."
