16 A Warning

The talk with Officer Zhou ended in the afternoon.

Officer Zhou Ming led her to the door and reminded her that he will come to find her again. However, once he swung the door open, Yu Feng was shocked upon finding a man standing in front of her.

Now that he was standing in front of him, Yu Feng was able to get a clear look at this man. Chief Zhang Yue looked like he was someone in his late twenty with sharp, piercing eyes, and thin lips. His royal blue robe looked so neat without a crease. Just from the way he was dressed, Yu Feng was able to tell that he was someone who wanted perfection.

Yu Feng immediately recognized this man as that Chief that she had seen earlier, Chief Zhang Yue.

Chief Zhang looked at Yu Feng and seconds later, he shifted his gaze to Officer Zhou Ming. "Officer Zhou, I heard that you come over to the command center. Why didn't you stop by to greet me?"

Officer Zhou cupped his hands and smiled. "Chief Zheng, you were busy just now and I did not want to disturb you."

The Chief narrowed his eyes. "Who is this? I heard that you took her around to the command center. Officer Zhou, you should know that this Bureau is not a place for one to go sightseeing."

"Chief Zhang, you are mistaken," Chief Zhou spoke. The amiable smile on his face stayed for a long time. "You should know who this boy is." He slapped Yu Feng on his back. "This is Xiao Feng, that famous street thief who was never caught before."

Hearing that, Chief Zheng turned to look at Yu Feng again. This time, his gaze was scrutinizing her from head to toe. His brow raised slightly and a doubtful look flashed in his eyes momentarily before it faded away.

"This time, I coincidentally caught him stealing some bread," Officer Zhou continued. "However, the owner of that stall did not want to put a charge on her, and therefore, we could not bring this boy to the magistrate."

"Then why is he here?"

"You should know that Xiao Feng is a fast runner and very agile," Officer Zhou said. "I brought him along to this place and hope that he would consider working as a runner rather than continuing his life as a thief."

Chief Zhang Yue shifted his gaze from Officer Zhou and Yu Feng alternately as he continued to listen. The look on his face gradually softened as if he was buying whatever nonsense that Officer Zhou was sprouting.

"I took him around this place hoping that he would have his interest in this career. However," Officer Zhou let out a long, disappointed sigh as he looked at Yu Feng. "This boy cannot read maps. Therefore, it is impossible for recruit him. This is why… I'm going to let him go after some warning."

"A warning?"

"Hmm," Officer Zhou nodded and laughed. "What else can we do? None of his victims were willing to come forward and complain."

Yu Feng looked at Officer Zhou and the corner of her lips twitched at his choice of words.

What victim? He made it sounded like she had murdered someone! However, Yu Feng knew better that she should not say a thing in her current situation.

This person who called Chief Zhang seemed like he was a dangerous person.

Chief Zhang turned to Yu Feng and his gaze stayed on her for a while longer. Then, he finally looked away to Officer Zhou. "You have been staying out of the office for days. Officer Zhou, if you still want to work with the Bureau, you should learn to do your job well."

"Of course," Officer Zhou nodded.

The Chief gave Officer Zhou and Yu Feng one last look before he walked away.

Once the man walked away, Officer Zhou's gaze stayed on Chief Zhang's retreating with his expression unreadable. He retracted his gaze after a few seconds and the smile on his face returned.

"Little boy, come on," Officer Zhou spoke. "I'll send you to the door before you wander off to a place you shouldn't be."

Yu Feng rolled his eyes as Officer Zhou Ming put his hands on her shoulder and pushed him towards the entrance.

Once they were back at the main road, Officer Zhou turned her body around and bent his body to get to her height level. The man stared into her eyes with a serious expression and spoke, "Don't run away. Remember to come when the time comes. I will keep my eyes on you."

Yu Feng let out a long sigh. "I know. I know. You mentioned this a few times already. Orange is still in your hand. I won't leave him alone."

The corner of Officer Zhou's lips turned up into an amused smile. He still thought that it was strange that they were able to blackmail her to work for them with that orange cat. To think that Yu Feng would value that tabby cat so much…

He watched as Yu Feng left the Bureau and soon, her figure disappeared along with the crowds. After a while, Officer Zhou's expression changed again. He returned to his office and closed the door behind him. Then, his lips moved to whisper a name softly, "Wen Ping."

Seconds later, a man dressed in all black appeared beside him. The man called Wen Ping knelt on one knee and cupped his hands to offer his salutation. "Master."

Officer Zhou's eyes flashed with anger "Who was it?"

This was not his first day in the Bureau and he always knew that someone has been watching his movement.

Earlier, he deliberately took that little street thief around the bureau to lure out this little mole around him. Just as he had thought, someone had reported his movement to Chief Zhang and that man did not wait for too long to come at his door.

Wen Ping lowered his gaze. "It's Chun Xiang."

Officer Zhou closed his eyes momentarily and sneered. "I know. You can go now."

The hidden guard disappeared as quickly as he appeared. He left Officer Zhou alone, to let the elderly man stayed in his room with his mind deep in his thought.

It seemed like, he needed to make a better preparation before the Lantern Festival, or else, he might implicate His Highness, Prince Yi.
